Are we allowed to use all of those sound effects and songs? I thought it was supposed to be all voice acted, including sounds...
It actually was... but it only means your score is dropped. His was amazing so his score wont be affected that much.

I don't recall any rule against using music and sound effects. I mean, I too felt that there was definitely an abuse of stock sound effects, but I wanted to make it clear that nobody deserves to be marked down just for using them (you never stated that explicitly in the rules). They should just know that it can affect their score if it detracts from their overall submission.

As far as judgment, I have been listening to all the submissions so far, but I want to reserve my opinions for the end of the contest. Remember everyone, having cool voices is important, but what's most important is the acting. Become your characters and understand them so the listener can too. When making my selections, my priorities will be in the following order:

1) Acting (how convincing was the overall performance? was delivery meaningful and timed well? was it free of accidental stuttering/stumbling?) */35 POINTS
2) Fit (do the voices you chose actually fit the characters you're trying to portray?) */20 points
3) Originality (in writing) */20 points
4) Range (Do your multiple voices actually sound like different people?) */15 POINTS
5) Mixing (did you take the extra time working with your audio to make it sound polished and chohesive?) */10 POINTS

The combined score out of 100 is what I will use for my final judgment. This is simply the system that I plan to use, but if any other judges find it useful, I encourage them to use something similar, perhaps weighting it differently based on their own priorities if they differ from mine.

There was a time where I wouldn't have wanted the boredom dubs on front page... but ever since "The Truth Is" got up there, I've felt like it's fair game. XD Anyway, thanks a ton for all your support, Xav. And thanks Newgrounds for not blamming the hell out my dubs... well except that first one that got whistled off the site... But thanks to the Fulps for letting me plead my case and putting it back ;-)

Thank you Newgrounds for daily 4! ^_^ I'm glad that my dubs are appreciated since my voice is really all I've got.

I thought the top Madness posts from today were really awesome. I especially liked Manufactory. It had a great sense of style to it and it told its story very well without a need for dialog as it the madness tradition. I think that's what ultimately gave it the edge over Xionic, which was still VERY well done and clearly had a LOT of work put into it.

You're better off using subtitles and having a silent movie than using those god-awful text2speech programs. I'm pretty much certain that using one is guaranteed to hurt you score unless you have legions of butt-buddy drones who will vote you up regardless of how terrible your audio is. In other words, a crew.

Well, whether Glassbomb accepts it or doesn't accept, i'm not too bothered.

You IM'd me the other day, and I've got no idea why you asked HalfV to do that instead of me. No offense to HalfV, but the mic quality was dead-awful. Anywho, I've got no idea if you're gonna get accepted or anything, but something like this might improve your chances: The Fighting is REAL Audio. Anywho, no voice editing in this, just added a bit of an echo effect.

Why do people keep using things like laziness and lack of time as an excuse for their poor submissions? There's not deadline is sight so just take your time. Sit down and don't start animating till you've got a clever idea in your head. Everyone seems to be focusing on a brand of lame overdone sprite slapstick where they could be putting more effort into their comedy.

So yeah, if I had to some up my advice in one word it be planning.

Awesome, I LOVE how this pretty much requires that animators use original audio! I'm sick of all the Phoenix Wrong wannabes (i like the official PW series, just not all the crap it spawned).

Anywho, if anyone needs some quick little voice thingies, just drop me a PM or an AIM (MrPez95) or just whatever. Like glassbomb though, if I think your idea totally sucks, I'll make sure you know.

My demo and resume are at http://voice.tomamoto.com just in case you're worried that I suck.

Of course there are many other choices besides me. Go to the Voice Acting Club (voiceactingclub.com) if you wanna find a selection of other good voice actors/actresses. I suggest that if you're gonna go there for this that you just listen to the demo index and scout out the voices that you like. There is a section for auditions, but that's mainly for larger productions. If for some reason you do decide to post an audition, make sure that it follows the rules or I'll probably be the one locking it.

Peace.

No offense intended to people who have already responded to this but I doubt you'll get any fantastic voice acting candidates with such a confusing post. If you do want some decent auditions from real voice acting enthusiasts, then go to the Voice Acting Club and make an audition thread that follows the rules there.

Shoot, if you look at my voice resume, every single flash I've listed is up on Newgrounds. I know people don't usually think of Voice Actors when they think of flash. Focus tends to be on the animators and logically so. But yeah, amateur web VAs like myself owe a LOT to newgrounds. How many cartoons would I get to be in if there weren't such an awesome unifying flash community that motivated people to make all this golden animation. My wager is none to very few...

In recent months, I've begun to seriously consider Voice Acting as a career, and I'd say that's a pretty big deal for someone who's nearly earned his Masters in Science (All that schoolin' just so I can take off and follow my dream? Sounds good to me). So yeah, Newgrounds may ultimately be what motivates me take up a career in professional voice acting.

I hope to continue being a part of Newgrounds through my acting and I hope that some day my name and voice will be commonly recognizable on this site.

Cheers to the lot of ya, Newgrounds. I feel like I owe you all so much.

Topic: Free Good Flash Voice Acting

Posted: 07/13/07 12:13 AM

The unfortunate state of many Newgrounds animations:
Good animation and writing is constantly wasted on bad voice acting.

But I do not appear before you to complain. I come to offer a most awesome and useful solution. Next time you're considering something along the lines of "eh, who cares about the acting quality?" or "eh, I'll just do it myself, then I'll get all the credit, mwhahaha!" think again. Yeah, maybe some of you animators out there do have voice talents or your cousins or your mom or whoever. I'm not disputing that.

Something I do notice in my experience on the portal is that pieces with comparable animation and writing quality will typically be scored MUCH higher when there is good voice acting. Remember, folks, that acting is an art too, and whether you like it or not, bad acting DOES hurt your scores because of the impression that it leaves.

This is not some stupid sales pitch... it's not like any of us voice actors really make any money doing this stuff. I'm talking about a mutual interest. In fact, our origin is the Newgrounds BBS and we're basically a branch of the NG community. I encourage people to come to the Voice Acting Club, post good, interesting, by-the-rules casting calls. This way, we get to be in awesome flashes, and your flashes are made more awesome by our acting. Nobody loses.

Indeed. Do go there. There are always many projects auditioning. That's how you get started.

Usually you have to go to the producers and audition for them directly. It's very passive and ineffective to expect them to come to you asking for voice work, especially starting out.
