Hi y'all,
Don't know if this topic has been posted b4 already. I hope I'm not the first person to bring this up.
There are a LOT of flashes, songs and loops that have been around for many months without receiving more than 10 votes. Some of them have even been here for years without receiving any attention.
A lot of them don't deserve any attention, except for votes for the sole purpose to get it blammed. You know the kind: "I am going to finish this later but I post it anyway", "this is my first .... ever, tell me what you think", or stuff that even the creator(s) don't really care much about. Those things lay around here for centuries, clogging up the database, making it harder for me to find stuff that NEED and/or DESERVE the attention. Now I take reviewing seriously, so I want authors to get the review they want, as long as they themselves take it seriously.
There are also pretty good and sometimes even kick-ass works that somehow got low ratings, apparently because they started a bit crappy, while the few people that have voted for it didn't take the time to listen to the better parts that only come later in the tracks/flashes.
All these works are thus easily forgotten and fail to get peoples attention for a long, long time.
Now if everybody could sort the databases by the number of votes and reviews the items have, at least reviewers can see which pieces of work at least PROBABLY need the attention. When I see the list of average vote scores, this doesn't tell me anything about how many people have spilled their guts over it. The total collective of newgrounds users are responsible for <1> making sure the good stuff remain, <2> the bad stuff get blammed (eventually!) and <3> that people get constructive feedback on how to improve their skills. That all would be much easier and efficient if people can have an overview on which works haven't got much attention.
Of course the author(s) of the works are responsible themselves for removing stuff that have no chance at all, but what I'm proposing here is something that only has to be implemented once, as opposed to relying the quality of newgrounds' content on thousands of individuals every single second.
So I propose for two extra SQL-queries for the music and flash art: one for sorting by number of reviews received, one for sorting by number of votes received. Sounds like a sound and pretty straightforward plan to me? What do you think about this?
Greetz,
ThusSpoke.
