The original NG search is better, it is more specific on what you are looking for on Newgrounds, therefore more organized. It should stay as is. The new search option could be secondary to search Newgrounds content via Google if you are not sure what something is called, or to search your username, but not the primary search option. The original should stay as it.

The main problem with this new search is that the original drop-down button for choosing to search for games, movies, art here is missing and you do not get to choose what kind of content you are looking for.

Are you serious? Some filters would be nice, but how often do you really search for "Ninja Tortulez 3" in something like Google only to be disappointed that the third result is a game, not the original movie.

I think this is a reasonable complaint for filtering purposes, but in practice, entirely bogus with a good enough search engine. The main reason a good search engine would want to filter/separate content is to display results differently. Ex: Google Search vs Google Image Search, and of course filter further, but with a good enough search engine, the results are already "filtered" in the sense that the top results are most-likely to be what you want.

Was disappointed.

No, but in all seriousness, The title of that Flash doesn't have the word hobo or anything in it, but it's still the subject matter. Point being the search was still relevant.

I know some sites have Google-powered searches, but you can stay on the site and isn't redirected. Is it going to be like that eventually?

If you switch over to the "Images" search tab with that query, you get this image:

It's something we could do but it would take a major rewrite of the search, which has already been a time consuming process multiple times in the past... Which is why either Google or integrating a pre-made solution would be best at this point.

What do you guys do with your search? I know you're a larger website, but I've built pretty darned effective searches using C# and LINQ in a matter of hours/days. Adding some steps to cache and index results is probably what I would want to do next. Thankfully, I was also using LINQ + Entity Framework (an ORM), which already performed some level of results caching.

I just worry that integration with another tool would be just as much work. But hey, there's probably a ton of "serious" search concerns that "real" search engines take care of, that I haven't ever had to implement. (Thumbnails, summary descriptions, statistical ranking/weighing of results and scores, etc.)

Response to: NG Search Test - Feedback Plz! Posted September 18th, 2014 in NG News

Hey, dude.
Is there any way you guys could be convinced to update the NG search functionality? I've had some frustrations with it.
$elling Point ($$$)
$$$$
Good search, rather than buttons/UI, is the #1 piece of functionality I see requested these days. I write web applications for a living, and I am surprised to find out how much even our smaller clients value search.
$$$$
As a use case scenario, a game I played recently was "Return to Tolagal".
- Searching for the exact title gives exactly one result, which isn't too bad of thing, and it's at least what I wanted.
- Searching for "Return to" gives me the following list of games:
1) Mastermind: WC
2) Abobo's Big Adventure
3) Cave of No Return
4) endeaver
5) cantankerousTANK
6) Sik Trix BMX
7) Tattoo Artist
8) Music Catch 2
9) Gamma Bros
10) Return of the Squid
11) Dark's Return
12) Return of Papulatus
13) Chronotron
14) REDDER
15) Paradox Embrace
16) Fragger
17) Return Of The Snowmen
18) Seedling
19) Return to Tolagal

===================

You remember that email, Tom? Well, a Google search for "Return To" gives "Return to Tolagal" as the FIRST result.

Searching for "The Hippo Song" gives "Noodles on my Back" (What I wanted) as the THIRD result.

Searching for artists, ex: "Oney" gives me their profiles, just as I expect.

Already, much better than what I think is a really crappy NG search bar :)

But I do wonder sometimes why using a monster like Google is necessary for giving decent search results. Ffs, I can't say I'm impressed that you couldn't even search for artists in the typical NG search, or that even a simple typo (bad because movies are often named "artistically" aka purposely misspelled) would omit what you're looking for from search results.

If I had searched for "return ot" in the usual NG search, I'd never find what I want.

Whereas a simple multi-threaded word-by-word search and a scoring system for results based on a prioritization filter could do the job. Of course, it'd also be computationally expensive! So maybe something statistical that does indexing is really what you want :) I won't judge.

I'm just passionate about the idea of this place having a decent search engine.
And it just doesn't have one.

:: Even more frustrating, we could actually get ad revenue from those ads if we attached it to our Adsense but Google kicked us off Adsense years ago and is being COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE with ever giving us another go... Which is also why we have no future with a YouTube channel at the moment.

I do not friggen understand this at all.

It is very, very easy to make a mistake with AdSense at some point. (I did it by applying and not being able to prove ownership of a pre-existing site.) They didn't even have the option to re-apply last I checked.

Can't like, you bother someone on Twitter about that? Twitter seems to get people replies.

Also, I get that Google's search is cool and all, but what is so hard about writing a custom search filter?

Well congratu-fricken lations. Enjoy paying taxes on that Kickstarter money.

And that "Please include only the quoted text that is relevant to blah blah blah" popup dialog is so annoying, and offensive. Nitpicking here, but all of the quoted text is relevant.

You know, Tom. I hate to say it, but I could complain about Newgrounds all day.

1. Open a website just like Newgrounds that's censored. Get better sponsors. Maybe give me a place that's like Newgrounds where I don't have to see gradually-looks-more-like-porn ads all over the site.

2. Use that money to fund Newgrounds. Censor nothing.

3. ??? (not really. nothing goes here.)

4. Win!

Response to: Tag Updates Posted August 24th, 2013 in NG News

Will you guys ever let people search in multiple categories at once?

Will you ever display inexact results so that users who make typos or who can't recall the exact name of something will still get results when they search?

I've had so much trouble using NG's search. Assuming someone knows exactly what they're looking for, it works just fine. If you assume that, though, there's no need for a search utility... Then again, I've been using NG for a long time and occasionally want to find a 5+ year old game or movie I have long-since forgotten the spelling of.

Response to: Verizon Customers, Grey Site Posted May 29th, 2013 in NG News

Removing the colors makes the content pop, but it also makes the site look really boring and the extra padding/margins around elements seem pointless.

I don't think Newgrounds needs to have the typical slick/modern, tile-based layout as every other site but I really hope someone at NG has time to just play around and prototype this stuff.

UX/UI is the #1 priority of a site which already has content-related stuff going for it. Not saying it should receive the most time invested into it, but there should be a day a week, or a few hours every now and then where someone sits down and talks about/prototypes new layouts or sections + the themes.

With modern web tools, that stuff isn't really hard.

I'm not sure how difficult the site would be to modify to adapt it to layout changes. I recommend just making something work and then learning, over time, the best way to refactor difficult code. Sometimes, rewriting very small portions at a time and using new code, slowly fading out old code (ex: replacing only one instance of old code, rather than all similar instances and seeing how that works) is all you can do.

I have some. If in-between frames and fiddling with the frame rate doesn't make sense, try experimenting with "ghosted" movements. Think about how manga/comic artists create action out of still images. They're under the ultimate animation constraint - they can't actually animate.

So they project.
