Hey everyone,
I just found out about this awesome new Internet service called Distrokid which can get your music onto iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon, and other sites in as little as 2 hours. It costs $19.99 to sign up, and then you can upload as many tracks as you want to these sites (through Distrokid) for a year! Sounds like a sweet deal, right? What do you guys think? Should I trust this site? :O

Personally, I think a lot of Family Guy's jokes are a little childish and ridiculous. Combine that with the crude and irreverent humor and the concept just sort of falls apart for me. At the same time, The Simpsons, like Family Guy, has grown to be much more plot-driven (as opposed to character-driven) in recent years. Simpsons is still on top, though. Sorry, FG fans. ;(

@Troisnyx @Sundans @LunyAlex @Bosa I appreciate your responses, guys (and ladies). I have considered many of those points before, however, and I believe we've considered having different "branches" of the competition based on fan total: one for <100 fans, one for 101-1,000, and one for over 1,000. Then, in order to address @SkyeWintrest's 2nd point, the winners in all 3 branches will face off in an epic finale! >:D Nothing is set in stone now, though. Once I confer with the judging team, we'll know the format for sure. First, I have to organize the judging team! XD
I'd also like the personally thank @SkyeWintrest for offering his wisdom and experience in the event that it should be needed. Thank you!
I'll keep doing what I can to make this contest a reality, everyone! If all goes according to plan, it'll start on July 27th! ;)

Great, thanks! :D I was planning on starting the equivalent to the "audition" phase this Sunday, and the competition itself is probably going to be one-round style, and the winners will be determined from one piece. 2 weeks for the "audition" phase, two weeks for the competition, and it should be done by the end of August. Actually, if it's only one round...we may not even need an audition phase. Instead, we could just have the winners in 3 categories: Underdog (<100 fans), Professional Amateur (101-1,000 fans), or All-Stars (>1,000 fans). Idk, though...once we have the judge team assembled, we'll chat it up on Skype about the details. Are you in college, EW? If so, we'll make sure we're all done before you go back! Welcome to the team! ;D

@Etherealwinds That's a truly inspiring story. Thank you so much for sharing it.
@Bad-Man-Incorporated and @enochcity Thanks very much for the offers, guys! I might take you up on those after I get this thing started. I'll PM you.
I'd also like the thank @Step and @Chronamut for imparting their wisdom and experience to me.
Given some of the advice I've seen here from various individuals, I don't think the participants should have to post one track to "audition" with like they do in NGADM. How, exactly, to determine who gets in or not is still worthy of consideration. We'll be as inclusive as possible. I think the community has been given enough time to dwell on this, but the people who ultimately decide how to handle the "audition-like" process should be the judges.
As for the judges, I have an interesting preposition for how to determine them: they'll simply be the people who got the furthest in last year's NGADM (and, in future years, perhaps the Audio Underdogs Contest)! Obviously, this idea has some flaws: who's to say that all or even ANY of those individuals are interested in doing this? Well, it's worth a shot, I'd say. At least 2 of them have already posted in this thread. So...

If you don't respond within 24 hours, I'll PM you. After that, I'd say the process of selecting the judges should be completely voluntary and open to any valid and experienced member of the NG Audio Community. I just thought this would be an interesting and stable way of determining the judges, and many of the above individuals were underdogs themselves in last year's NGADM. ;D
I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts about this competition, NGAC! Thanks for all the support! ^^

At 7/21/14 01:13 AM, Step wrote: Let me just drop by to say that @Troisnyx pretty much echoes my thoughts about the NGADM. I sometimes see the contest viewed as an elitist event where only the cream of the crop get to take part, or only the bunch of people who make a particular genre get to do well, which kind of depresses me because that's not its intention at all. Sure, we've had NGADM "elites" do well before (@F-777, @Waterflame, etc), but they didn't do well because they're popular but because they make genuinely good music (at least in the opinion of the judges they do). We have arguably more underdogs who do well than veterans.
Trois mentioned herself, @etherealwinds and @johnfn, who are the very definition of underdogs. In fact, almost all of the NGADM winners in the past (@Blackhole12, @Buoy, @ProudAardvark, @Kor-Rune, @johnfn) were relatively unknown in the Audio Portal and Audio Forum (with the exception of Buoy perhaps). Their genres also span from electronic to ambient to jazz to orchestral to metal to chiptune to anything in-between, which I think proves that the rest of the judges and I at least TRY to make it a competition accessible for both veterans and underdogs from any musical genre background.
Having said that, due to the nature of the auditions process, it's true that a lot of talented musicians don't make it through to the main competition. Case in point, @PirateCrab didn't make it through to the main contest even though he's becoming one of my favourite metal artists on the site. We originally implemented the auditions process not because we want this to be a contest for only the elites, but because we feel that it's fair for the entry of people to the contest to be based on the quality of their music, rather than whether they were lucky enough to secure a spot before the 64 spots are filled.
Originally for the first iteration of the NGADM, we had it on a first-come-first-serve basis, but we think that auditions make it fairer than a race to see who can post in the thread first. We got kind of swamped by the amount of auditions we received, which is why we recently switched from 32 spots to 64 spots, but a lot of talented people still don't make it in. Because of this, I agree that there should be a larger variety of contests. However, I disagree that the status of "underdog" should be a criteria. NGADM may have limited spots because it's a knockout competition, but a lot of other competitions (NGMT, MAC/NAC, etc) can have an unlimited number of contestants, meaning anyone can take part, whether a seasoned user or an underdog.
Anyway, I know @SkyeWintrest is interested in organising another NGMT this winter, so there's that to look forward to. If anyone else wants to organise other contests, then there really is nothing stopping you. I'd suggest running it through with a moderator or something first if you're not a frequent forum poster, and try and put effort into making it organised, fun, and with sufficient detail in the opening post. NGADM fills the role of being the generic knockout competition which a large chunk of Audio Portal members take part in. It has no specific theme or any catches. There are plenty of other niches for contests to cover, and while I don't think there's much point in making an "underdogs only" contest, I fully support having more contests on the forums.
Wow, I deeply appreciate your feedback, Step, especially given your experience as a Moderator, frequent forum poster, and, of course, co-founder of the NGADM! I never meant to imply that the NGADM had not done an excellent job of helping underdogs become more recognized in the community. I simply thought there should be more opportunities for this to happen, and an "Underdogs Contest" would be the best way to do this.
However, I'm slowly starting to realize that discriminating a lot of AP members in a competition is not a very good idea, no matter the intention. Like @Troisnyx mentioned, though, I'm afraid that this contest will simply devolve into a "2nd-level NGADM" if that's the case, and that doesn't seem fulfilling for the competitors or myself.
Does anyone have any ideas for how I can solve some of the "problems" or previous audio contests on NG with this one? I want to have, at the very least, an alternative format which would appeal to some individuals more than single elimination (or the format of other competitions I'm not aware of) does.
Thank you. :)

I just wanted to point out that i in general like the idea - so dont get me wrong. It is true that the competition in the NGADM auditions is very hard and that a lot of talented musicians probably wont make it even they are great. Maybe the problem of the NGADM is that it is one of the last contests out there so almost any known artist from this site want to participate.
I really hope NG will host a lot of more contests - this keeps the scene vivid and brings in a fresh wind. Also a lot of artists show their real talent in contests. Unexpected skills can be unveiled!
I just dont know which creteria should be taken. Years of membership? Age? Maybe the best way would be to decide concerning fans. Artists with thousands of fans dont need to get attention while those with just a few needed it to get the chance to become more known. Dont know if this will work, but i imagine it could.
Good luck for the preparations. I hope ths will become a success!
Okay, no worries, man! I really appreciate your support. ^^ I just hope more people will realize that the main reason why this contest may exclude some users is to be able to give other less popular users more success. Whether or not that's fair - and which criteria makes it the most fair - is worthy of consideration. ;)
Thank you all very much for your ongoing enthusiasm/constructive criticism regarding this competition.
I think it's been well-established by now that age and date joining the site are irrelevant means of determining who is and isn't an "underdog." I'd like to personally thank @Troisnyx @SoundChris and @KatMaestro for communicating this to me. I agree.
Given that the Audio Portal doesn't have much to lose, though, and that anyone who objects to the discriminative nature of the contest doesn't have to participate, I'd like to move forward with the competition. However, I'd like to propose what I hope will be seen as a fairer way for the contestants to be determined: I think other users could nominate who they see as "underdogs." We could even create a panel of well-respected users (like Troisnyx, SoundChris, and KatMaestro) to decide this, or simply leave it up to any old Audio Community member to do so in this thread or perhaps another one.
Please let me know what you think of this idea, and if you have any other ideas for how to make the competition more fair, please post a reply RIGHT HERE! Thanks everyone! ;D

@SoundChris @Troisnyx I respect your opinions that current contests/systems expose underdogs as well, but as I see it, you're both talking about the Newgrounds of 2 or 3 years ago. It was easier to get attention then imo. Now, I believe it is different. I think the NGADM is an extremely exciting competition that produces a lot of awesome content, but I think a lot of the same people as last year have the best chance to get further in it. I think the most exciting and rewarding competition would be one in which users gain experience through the competition without having it before. Imagine the reaction if, say, Katy Perry auditioned for American Idol (or Britain's Got Talent, or Arab Idol, or whatever). It would be RIDICULOUS! This potential contest may be exclusive, but it will create some new "elites" on Newgrounds that will continue to add fresh faces and variety to the community. Isn't that what we want? To expand the community and integrate as many people as possible? I say YES! :D
I can't believe this has gotten such a huge response! :D Thanks guys!
It seems to me like making a contest for teenagers is the worst idea of the 3 proposed ones. A lot of the "elites" here are teenagers (Step, Echo, etc.). Maybe we could split the contestants into 3 groups (one under 100 fans, one teenagers, and one who joined the site after January 1st, 2013), and then the winners of those groups who face off in an epic final! :D That way, we're excluding the least number of people as possible. However, there are a few problems with this: people could be pretending to be younger than they are or could create alternative accounts so that they fit into the Under 100 Fan Club or have joined the site after a certain date. I'm also concerned that we're starting this contest a little too late in order to finish it before school starts up again for a lot of people (including myself). However, I do like @Johnfn's idea that the members of the contest outside of a certain group would judge the submissions of that group. Tell me what you think, NG! I think we should start this contest AT THE LATEST on the 27th of July (if we're doing it at all). I'll give until then for some ideas to float around and the format to be solidified, but we really need to get started on this thing NOW! :O
Thanks for your support, NG Audio Community! Let's make this awesome! ^^
Hi everyone. So, I've noticed that many of the same individuals tend to get onto the front page of the audio portal a lot. It's becoming harder and harder for the "Underdogs" of the site to get attention. I've noticed that my own tracks have steadily got less and less hits since early 2013 or so. But, well, I'm not that good...lol. Anyway, I've been trying to think of ways to get more exposure for people that are either new to the site or just not as experienced as some of the "elites." Especially since NGADM has become increasingly more competitive over the last couple of years (which, in many ways is a good thing, of course). Perhaps we could have another contest once a year that tries to shine the light on people besides Envy and Waterflame (who are awesome artists that have personally inspired me very much, btw). Maybe we could have a contest for just teenagers, or just people who joined the site within the last 1 or 2 years or something. We could even have a contest for people who have less than 100 fans (at the start of the contest, at least). ;) What do you guys think? Is it too exclusive? Too ambitious? Should I be posting this under "Ways to Improve the Audio Portal," Purgy? Probably...but whatever! Now that you've read this rather not-so-concise proposal, tell me what you think, NGAC! :D
