I think I like hanging out in the "Regulars Lounge", so I think I'll settle on in...

...and to start with, I'll share something I have to deal with next Wednesday:

So last Tuesday night, I was driving home from a poker game at a local bar and grill when I got pulled over by a police officer. The reason I was pulled over was that my license plate lights were out, so it's one of those things where I had no idea they're out in the first place. The officer gave me a warning though, and handed me a paper that states that it was in fact; a warning.

Fast forward to last Friday, I received a letter from my town, and it states that I'm being charged $169 for the same offense! The worse part is that I got their letter on my birthday, so it nearly ruined my day. Thankfully though, I later went to an Italian Restaurant with my family for a nice dinner.

I have scheduled my court appearance for next Wednesday, September 3rd. I'll let you guys know how it goes, and it really shouldn't be a big deal. I kept the copy of my warning receipt, which should no doubt drop the charges. Besides, I fixed those lights shortly after I got pulled over, and it only cost me $5.

- The white men are Ralph Weems, a Marine and Iraq Veteran and his friend David Knighten who is an Air Force Veteran who served in Afghanistan
- Man in parking lot suggested they go elsewhere
- Said the black men inside were angry over the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson and that it may not be a safe place for white people
- The two men go inside to eat
- After entering an argument broke out and police were called
- They cant do anything
- They decide to leave to eat elsewhere, end up going to Huddle House to eat
- A group of 20 black men from Waffle House followed them to parking lot of Huddle House
- The 2 men try to calm the angry mob but it doesn't work
- They get attacked and beaten
- Knighten gets taken to the ground and kicked repeatedly and suffers minor fractures and cuts
- Weems gets attacked much more severely, close to death and ends up needing brain surgery and was put in induced coma by doctors
- Racial remarks where yelled by the black crowd towards the white men during the beating
- Police show up after crowd leaves

Quote from the police chief Tim Brinkley: "This does not appear to be a hate crime"

Gosh, it sure must be tough being black in a country like America ! !

This barely relates to Ferguson. Personally, I think this could be its own thread on the politics forum, since this takes place in Mississippi, and we don't know exactly what the confrontation was about. Could it be over the Ferguson shooting? Maybe, but other than "some black men were angry over the Michael Brown shooting", there are no other leads to suggest that.

Other than that, I hope the two men who were attacked pulls through, and that Weems makes a full recovery...

A lot of people now think of CSI or detective shows but most of the jobs in that field are security and corrections, not to say either is a bad career choice. My father worked in a federal prison through college and made a career in the federal bureau of prisons. He was even working toward a masters of public administration which is something you might consider down the road. Lots of guys will have full careers as COs but there are opportunities to move up (like my dad did). The only problem is that prisons tend to be built in rural areas or out of the way towns (nobody wants one in their back yard I suppose).

Funny thing is, Public Administration is my top preference for my Master's. I have my application lined up with Travis County to be a jailer, which honestly wouldn't be a bad start. I've heard nothing but good things about their Sheriffs Department in general.

Response to: - The Regulars Lounge Thread - Posted August 26th, 2014 in Politics

I wonder what a criminal justice degree teaches. From what I have seen in the criminal justice field, most jobs either don't need a degree or they already have a specialized degree. CSI need science degrees. Juvenile Justice people most often need social work. Same for the drug folks. The court staff need paralegal training. The judges and attorneys need JDs. The very specialized folks need a very speciliazed dgeree (such as accounting, computers, and so on)

Sounds like criminal justice as a degree is just a ticket for someone to become a detective, as most departments prefer or require a degreee for their detectives. Perhaps that is the way to go.

I sort of learned that the hard way by the time I became a senior at my university, but instead of changing majors all together and having to take another year or so in college, I might as well continue with the course. The Criminal Justice classes I focused on was investigative and administrative related fields, but you can also learn about police work, probation, parole, corrections, and criminal law (if you wanted to be a criminal defense attorney). In fact, I also have a certificate in Criminalistics, which would in theory help me become a detective or a crime scene investigator in the future.

I recently read an article where people with Criminal Justice degrees are the third most underemployed in the nation, which most of them work as police or security officers. It doesn't particularly bother me too much though, because I'm focusing on starting off as a cop anyway before I consider my options on grad school, or maybe law school. Or, I might like my job enough that I'll keep it.

Opinions on Politifact? Posted August 26th, 2014 in Politics

This is just a general question I wanted to bring in the politics forum. What are your opinions on Politifact? Do you guys think it's a trustworthy site, or are they bias on one side or the other? I rarely, if any, see someone used Politifact as a source when it comes to arguing politics. So, I'm kind of curious why that is.

In case any of you haven't heard of Politifact, they are a website of journalists that research statements made by politicians, popular figures, and from other people. They compare to what they find to the statement, then they post an article over said statement with a rating of either: True, Mostly True, Half True, Mostly False, False, or Pants on Fire.

Here are a couple of examples:

One they considered True: http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2014/aug/24/juan-williams/juan-williams-no-1-cause-death-african-americans-1/

One they considered "Pants on Fire": http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2014/aug/14/chain-email/chain-email-says-former-czech-president-called-ame/

http://www.kvue.com/story/news/politics/2014/08/25/perry-attorneys-file-motion-to-dismiss-charges/14569179/

"Attorneys for Gov. Rick Perry have filed a 60-page writ of habeas corpus to dismiss the charges filed against the governor.

The writ claims the charges of abuse of power and coercion filed against Perry are unconstitutional and that Perry was simply exercising his constitutional veto powers when he vetoed funding for the Public Integrity Unit last summer.

'By seeking to criminalize not merely the veto itself, but the Governor's explanation for it as well, this prosecution also violates the Governor's rights under Free Speech Clauses of the United States and Texas Constitution...' the writ says in part.

The writ also says the indictment violates the constitutional separation of powers and the speech or debate clause in the Texas Constitution.

Perry is facing two felony charges related to his actions surrounding a veto he made last year regarding funding for the Public Integrity Unit. Prosecutors claim Perry abused his power when he threatened to withhold funding from the PIU if Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg did not step down following her DWI conviction last year."

You can also read the full 60 page writ of habeas corpus from the link as well. This will get very interesting...

Do you see protesters on the streets for the other shootings? Have the police responded similar to the way Ferguson Police did? Also, what about several other shootings that involve White Cop and Black Suspect? They were probably ignored too, weren't they?

Yes, Mike Brown was a criminal and no I won't stay silent on the day of his funeral because he lived his life as a criminal and died as one. We already seen the video of him stealing and assaulting from a clerk only 15 minutes before he was shot dead by a cop. I am sick of this *beep* in our Country.

Yes, because one isolated event that a person does should deem someone a career criminal... Fun fact: my brother was caught spray painting a public sign and was arrested years ago. Are you calling my brother a criminal now?

I'll say this again, until what the investigators say, we don't know what happened when the cop and Brown were at it by their car, but as soon as Brown ran from the police, the threat towards the officer was over. Thus shooting him was using excessive force!

We have evil people like Democrats and Al Sharpton that love to create fake racism in the black communities so they can profit off it which ends up creating REAL RACISM and real Divide between people. You sons of a bitches make me sick to my stomach and you are not REAL Americans.

Oh no! We disagree on who's right and who's wrong? I guess if we don't agree with anything you say we're not Americans.

I'm not talking about the blacks that are brainwashed by the Liberal Media to only view society as a black vs white society, but the Media in general that contributes to them thinking this way. Black Americans are Americans just like everyone else, but the Liberal Media makes this fake racism narrative for ratings and I'm really fed up with it.

Fox News is Liberal Media?

You're supposing that the only way to involve yourself in politics is to vote or to be a politician. What about rallies? What about protests? What about movement on the street?

You can do both of these things, and voting takes very little effort to do compared to forming a rally. I'd voted for Gary Johnson in 2012 knowing that he won't win, but I'm not letting the other two politicians take my vote for something I don't agree completely with. Not voting won't solve anything, and it's because of what Korriken said.

Plus, the Texas Democrats will certainly remember this, and can use that as fuel against the GOP. You're probably right that he won't be charged with anything in the end, but in the long term he'll be affected badly.

OK, but why didn't they do it earlier? Why would this case suddenly grab their attention?

Also, unless the President enacts and executive order, the government would have to propose the bill to Congress, where the House and the Senate have to pass the bill, THEN the President can sign that bill into action; making it a law.

Anyway, this is going a bit off topic, so I think I'll end this here.

Because then the government would notice that all autistic children don't understand anything about danger and if they ran away, they would eventually die. I was just imaging. I didn't expect that all autistic people would be protected by the government and then get treated like they are five years old.

My point is that there have been several hundred runaway cases involving Autistic Children, and the government had not taken that kind of action yet. I doubt the government will do anything in this particular case either, even if he was Autistic...
