There is something that Seth MacFarlane doesn't seem to understand about pop-culture references, and that is: It's not enough to just REFERENCE the pop-culture idioms, you have to do something FUNNY with them! Make a joke, not just referencing it word-for-word.

The golden rule of bad comedy writers is: "If people recognize the pop-culture reference, they'll laugh even if the joke's not funny."
