We both started to work with FL Studio 10 almost 2 years now. We had very little experience with producing music previously. I remembered vaguely how to play the piano, Paul not even remembering how to play the guitar. I thought we needed to get the most expensive VSTs to get the best sound, but as Paul pointed out, I don't need the best piano in order to sound good. So, we both got Massive and that was it. We use Toxic Biohazard, 3xOsc, Sytrus,, Z3ta+, Harmless, Massive, and soundfonts. That's the extent of it. We might throw in a third party synth here and there, but we don't put too much emphasis on the type of VST. We find we can produce the sound we want with enough processing and 3xOsc.

Before our fellow aspiring music producers plunk down a wad of cash on a fancy VST, we both recommend sticking with the basic ones given to you by Image Line before you progress on to something like NI FM8.

If you have a low budget and need ambient sounds, I'd try the company Vector Bearings.
If you have no budget, you can download ambient, household, natural, and machine sounds at PACDV.com.
Push comes to shove, you could always grab a mic, record it, and clean it up using your own audio editing software.
