How many going into art careers? Posted March 11th, 2014 in Art

Was just curious about how many of you are thinking or working on going into the art field as illustrators, graphic designers, concept artists, painters, or whatever. Anyone planning to attend any art schools or art programs? What about those already working as professionals? Thought it would be interesting to throw some of these questions out there and see what comes back.

(I know I'm not that good, that's why I'm posting here, for advice.)

It's neat. I'd say try not to make your drawings on lined paper if it can be helped. You'll only get better if you keep on practicing so just keep at it!

That's real handy as I was wondering about this as well. It's too bad that something like this doesn't have higher visibility since there don't seem to be any sticky threads or anything. Appreciate the post.

I really what I see. I'm getting something of a Mike Mignola vibe from all this and I can totally get behind that. I love your style and think it's great that you have such a distinct way of doing things. I'd be happy to see some more full color work from you.

I like this picture but the only thing putting me off of it is the light blue outline. I mean it isn't bad, but it's obvious and looks a bit unnatural. Maybe it would work if the background was different. I'm not an expert in color so I'd look around.

Yeah you could be right. It's a little old now so I'm not sure I'm willing to fiddle around with it. It's something I'll certainly keep in mind though. Thanks for the tip.

Response to: Tips on drawing good anime eyes? Posted March 2nd, 2014 in Art

The drawing I included is a somewhat older work of mine, and Twilight (the purple one) looks very weird. Right now I want to focus on the eyes.

Thanks, any feedback is appreciated :D

If it were me, I'd simply make copies of these eyes until I felt I could do them well. That's a pretty quick way to learn how to draw something like that. Here are some tips: make the eyelashes thick, make the highlights less prominent (maybe lay off the airbrush here as well), don't leave out the lower eyelid, make the pupil dark enough, note that irises are often a bit lighter than the pupils, and I'd also consider leaving a line around the irises in order to bring them out against the whites. I don't think this style of eye is as difficult as many I've seen in anime, so it shouldn't take too long to work if you put some time in to practice them.

Normally when you make a really good piece some aspect about it just pops, but for some reason this piece I am posting feels like something is holding it back from really standing out, some sort of adjustment I need to make but I can't put my finger on it. Thank you to anyone in advance with anything to say to help improve this piece. I have drawn this in flash, it is a portrait of a good friend of mine.

I think it's neat, particularly the job you did on the hair there. I don't know too much about Flash, probably would've done something like this in Illustrator. I don't think it's bold enough. I would say clean up the lines and make the colors brighter. I also think this could benefit from a little color balancing. It seems like something you would see out of 1960s Pop Art which is pretty cool, but I think it still has a bit further to go. Cool stuff, though.

Response to: Is a drawing tablet worth it? Posted March 2nd, 2014 in Art

I've been looking at a small wacom tablet and I'm worried about resting my hand on the screen, can you actually do that or does it make it go all over the place?

I don't know. It's one of those things where each person's mileage will vary. I've owned two tablets: a Bamboo and an Intuos Pro. I almost never used the Bamboo because I hated how it felt to draw on and the size was limited. Bought the Intuos last year and I love it, worth every penny. I use the tablet specifically for coloring though. I personally don't like using it to make drawings, but you might. I own a scanner as well and think it's been a better investment since it's actually quite possible to draw well using a mouse. I don't have any problems with resting my hand on the tablet.

Very cool, man. I haven't been following the thread super closely, but what programs have you been using? Anyway, if I had to offer any sort of critique, it would be to work on your composition. It looks like you're fond of placing your subjects directly in the center of image. There's nothing wrong with it per se; it just lacks a little variety. One of the first things I learned when I began taking design classes was how uninteresting a symmetrical composition is. You want to set your image up so that the viewer's eye moves around within in it, guiding it this way and that. Even with portraits you should try to avoid having the subject directly face you. I like what you're doing; keep it up!

It's all original stuff. I wish I could animate; I just don't have that kind of patience. Also, here's one I hadn't intended on uploading, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to share. We artin' it up in this mofo.

It looks like everyone is having some fun showing off their work around here so I thought I'd join in. It's also neat how people get to know each other through the type of work they do. With that said, let me get to sharing some stuff with you.

I'm diggin' it too. What's the story behind this commission of yours? This got to the art director for Mighty or am I thinking of something very different? By any chance did you try any other robot designs or is it just the one? Seems like something that would be a bit of fun to do.

That's some pretty gruesome stuff (and I mean that in the best possible way). I have a soft spot for all things horror so this is kind of doing it for me. I'm not so sure how I feel about the graph paper though. Are you going to take this one any further or leave it as is?
