Deux ex machina! Going to make good use of that! But I'm still very much confused...
I'm not used to the AM PM thing. I just say 00:00 - 23:59. That's all 24 hours in the day. So the deadline was June 22nd 12:00 AM, which I would call June 22nd 00:00 (alternately June 21st 24:00). Now the deadline is 24 hours later so June 22nd 11:59 PM. I would call that June 22nd 23:59.
When you said June 22nd 12:00 AM, I thought that meant what I call June 22nd 12:00 (exactly between 00:00 and 23:59). Now what would you call it if it were actually June 22nd 12:00? So 12 hours later than 12:00 AM and 12 hours earlier than 11:59 PM, exactly in between.

Has it happened?

Strangely enough it has. It has started with the invention of the cd, and has gotten worse when the hipster culture became mainstream. Where I live most stores sell records again. The commercial as well as the exclusive ones. Even some of my friends bought brad new record players. Yet my parents who grew up with those things, put theirs in the attic where it stays. I never was a huge fan of mp3. Though anything above 192 kbps doesn't sound too bad. Only with songs I made myself can I tell the difference between mp3 and cd quality wav. According to studies, most people don't hear the difference don't hear the difference between cd and vinyl. With digital production equipment there even isn't much or any difference. On top of that, vinyl has some flaws cds don't have. Vinyl always wears down when you play them due to the friction of the needle. CDs wear down much less. mp3s not at all (they just get corrupted or deleted). Whenever you bump against a vinyl player (or walk around the room too much) it stops playing, because the needle slings out of the groove and you can damage you vinyl. Vinyl takes up lots of space. CDs less. mp3s even less. The strangest thing is, these friends of mine that are total fanboys of vinyl, have over 90% of their music as mp3 which they convert to 128 kbps because "It takes up less disk space, and you don't hear any difference anyway.". I think 128 kbps sounds terrible. If you don't hear that stop pretending you can hear the difference between cd and vinyl. This proves to me going back to vinyl is just a hype, and I refuse to take part in it.

Best song meaning the one that best represents your talents. Whatever it is you're typically able to pull of pretty well in almost every song you make, really. Whether it be intricate melodies, catchy rhythms, crazy bass, simple, etc, I suppose.

I'd say for anyone, it doesn't have to be your most popular song. If anything, maybe it's your most normal song, because it best represents your "style".

but pick your BEST normal song :D

Ah, ok. But it's a little hard to tell which song best represents your own talents or style. Especially when you want to make every song sound different. That's why I thought it may be better to let the listeners decide. If it doesn't work I'll choose a different song next year.

It should be the other way around. It's not nice to blame someone for something you don't even know they did. No one can prove they never murdered someone. Should you therefore just convict everyone? I plead for "innocent until proven guilty".

A while ago I made a joke about Bosa taking up so many places in the cinematic genre. That got slightly out of hand. Truth is, Bosa makes good music. He's been around NG for a long time and is very supportive to the audio community. He's got a lot of fans. Therefore it's logical his work receives lots of positive votes. The cinematic genre is relatively new, and not many zero bombers have had the chance to force the king off the throne. But sadly one day it will come to that.

So don't point fingers at Bosa and MarkySpark just because they're not here to defend themselves.

Most of his songs are rather old, and it's probably because they had a lot of votes to begin with they are harder to downvote and now clutter the first page.
But if such is the case, then what can account for Bosa's, BlazingDragon's and HFX's works disappearing from Pages 1 and 2 when they themselves have had a lot of votes (and more fans and reviews on that occasion)?

That's a good point. Though some of MarkySpark's songs have a lot of votes. More than other well known (or better known) musicians. I think I saw one of his songs had almost 900 votes. There's also the voting power to take into account, so you can not look at the number alone. I don't know if any of the voting numbers are fair, in fact we all know how easy it is to abuse the system. It could be MarkySpark has been upvoting his own songs in the past, or maybe several devoted fans, I don't know. But that may have nothing to do with the current downvoting. In any case I will not jump to conclusions too soon. But there is something going on I agree.

Sounds different than their previous albums. But all of their albums sound different so we've come to expect that. I don't understand all of the people who say "It's not the Daft Punk we know", but it seems that's just a hip thing to say whenever artists do something different. Daft Punk's doing something different every time, and I like that about them. You can still hear a lot of typical Daft Punk elements. Like the funkiness and the vocoders and all. I like the album a lot.

I wanted to pre-order the album, but I asked my brother to give it for my birthday instead. Something went wrong with the order, and now my brother is on holiday, so I still haven't got it. I've listened to it a lot though on sites where they stream it to advertise.

I fail to see how RAM sounds like Chromeo. Not like anything I've heard of Chromeo in any case. But then again I've only listened to a few of their songs, and I'm not a fan. Anyway Daft Punk has been around for a much longer time than Chromeo, and RAM is based on even older music sometimes as early as the 70s.

I don't know either. Perhaps a short description in under 300 characters would be a nice addition. I feel something for that.

About the animations I was kidding. I don't expect all of the musicians to be able to make an animation as well. It got me thinking though. Wouldn't it be nice to have a competition where instead of a theme, someone makes a musicless animation, and all contestants have to make a musical score to fit the animation. That way the animation will do the talking, and everyone will instantly see if the music fits. That will be a whole different competition altogether, but still an interesting one.

I have all of the Matrix soundtracks and motion picture scores on cd. I should listen to them again. Reminds me of your music btw PeterSatera. Is that where you get some of your inspiration from? I think if you'd make something like Fluke's song Zion for this round not many people will think it fits the theme. It will be a nice variation though. Unless everyone will go for an underground party now. I don't think I'll take that risk... Or maybe I will.

I know that if I were just listening to your track without seeing your description I'd have found it difficult to understand much of anything, the vocoding was pretty heavy.

Also, it IS a drawback that you can't say anything about why you did what you did. But then, neither do most people who are making soundtracks - you can't exactly explain your stylistic choices to everyone who listens during a movie or game!

I made a new version with easier to understand lyrics (self promotion alert).

You wouldn't want to sit next to me when you watch a film/play a game I did anything for, or I'll be talking all through it. But I do that with anything I know something about. That's a blue screen shot, that's a puppet, that's a stunt double, that's a rubber sword they corrected with CGI so it doesn't flop about, that's a matte painting in the background, that stone is made of styrophoam, that's sugar glass, that actor has this name, and played in that and that and that movie before and that one after, etc.

No, but it's true. When you make soundtrack for something you can't explain to the audience why you did what. That should ideally be instantly apparent. Though then again. When the composer has a nice story to tell for the interviews it works well as promotion.

But usually films and games are more restricted than this contest. Both the composer and the audience have images, a story and other sound they can use to see if a story fits. In this contest the themes are much more open to interpretation. E.g. for the monochromatic theme you can think of an old happy Disney film that is made in black and white because of the restrictions of that time. Or of a world with advanced technology in 2365 where all colour is absorbed by machines controlled by the government. Or about a present day person who happens to be colour blind and sings about his/her view of the world. All would give distinct songs, with different artistic choices.

Yet judging in this contest gravitates towards the more obvious and plain interpretation of the theme. I find myself guilty of this. So many songs to judge and not that much time. I'm much harsher with my critique that I would normally be, without even trying to get into the mindset of the composer, which feels mean.

For the composers it isn't always interesting either to make a straightforward song. You have to do something different to set yourself apart from the other contestants. Sometimes your imagination runs wild, and you get these vivid images of something more unique and specific that the general them. You try to convey what you feel at risk of being accused of "straying too far from the theme".

I won't claim I would have gotten more votes if people had a broader mind set. The winners well deserve what they got and the submissions were all very good. It's difficult to compete against that. Still nice to be part of it. Still it makes you think. Such a voting system is a little like making a Hollywood film. Where many experts work on one project, and everyone has to work so hard to meet the exact expectations of everyone else, that there's no room for an artists expression of his/her own feelings. Making you question if it can still be called art.

You can always type your description into some speech synth and make that be the first few minutes of your track. ;-)

Actually I had the same problem. I wish there was some way to justify our theme decisions.

Reminds me of what I did in the first round. A lot of people thought the song didn't fit the theme for some reason, while to me it made perfect sense. I could give at least five reasons why it was monochrome when I gave my description of the song to Skye. In any case I thought the lyrics would provide the decisive answer. But as it turned out, people either didn't listen to them, or they thought they were hard to understand because of the vocoder.
