Once I dreamed I was in high school and I had an evil stepmother who was a necromancer, who opened a dimensional portal, to let a planet in that was an alternate version of the earth. On this planet lived people that were already dead on ours, or alternate versions of people that were still alive (e.g. a male variant of a female, a black of a white, a friendly of an unfriendly person). The people from the other planet entered ours, and we had to play a bad ass version of handball against them (inside a cage with steel balls, and you could smash each other aside). At the end of each match I had to fight one on one against one of the people from the alternate dimension.
I had a forbidden love relationship with some girl, and we had to hide from the evil stepmother, because she could oversee the entire city (like in 1984).
There were also angels who were the guardians of the other planet and had to restore the balance. They wore white with red robes, and large hats, that kept their faces obscured in the shades. They had name tags though. And they carried huge swords with chainsaw blades.

Absolute silence doesn't exist. Unless you're inside something like an anechoic chamber or you are in some random ass fantastic place where there are no mediums for sound to travel. Or in outer space, since there is no air, even if a solid is vibrating, the sound wave can't reach your ear.

Yeah in a perfect vacuum with no molecules absolute silence could exist. Anyway, even when it doesn't exist in real life, there can still be a value for theoretical absolute silence. Just like there's a value for absolute 0 temperature, even though it cannot be reached in practice.

Okay. Since you get a point for voting, and you can only vote when you participate, it would work out in the end I think. The more you keep this competition running, the more points you get.

Btw I voted track 4.

Also congrats to all the winners for winning. And to all other participants for making the winners look better.

Third place is third place. Still counts.

At 6/28/13 12:02 PM, SkyeWintrest wrote: 1. Would you rather have the current one-entry-one-vote system or a system of "One submission gets two votes. If both votes are used, the people who submitted get one vote added to their count."? Alternative voting systems are being considered, but these are the choices for the next contest.

I'm for two votes. Only one vote per entry makes it unpredictable and gritty. I have some alternate systems I want to propose though. See below. Rewarding voting is a good idea/must because you have an advantage when you don't vote and that isn't fair.

2. Would you be willing to download a file or two and use specific free VSTs in a round?

My DAWs I'm currently using don't support VSTs so no. Unless you can use them as individual instruments as well, or if there's another not too complicated way you can use them without having to pay for 500 dollar software. It sounds interesting, but too much of a hassle.

3. Considering the winner is decided by the votes, would you be willing to allow the hosts to submit entries? If there is a non-submitting person counting votes and relaying them to me for posting of the thread?

I think not sorry. I like there's a separation between the hosts on one end and participants on the other. I'm sure you won't abuse your power as host, but we can never tell for sure, and a lot of problems may arise.

4. Would you like to allow non-participants to vote, or specific non-participants to vote (such as the hosts)?

This is one of those problems. The point of the competition is that you don't know who's who when you vote. The host knows who made what, so his vote isn't the same as the others, and it defeats the point of the competition.

5. Do you believe the hosts need to review submissions considering the amount of feedback? (don't worry, we'll still do this for the top 3 and at least 5 people with 0 votes regardless)

No, but it would still be nice.

6. Is there any way you can think of to make the submission and voting process easier/clearer?

It's easy and clear. I don't have every day time to vote, so one week voting time would be better for me. Also perhaps it's best to send the vote to skye instead of other contributors, since skye has to know all of the votes in the end anyway before the round is finished, and this time the results were delayed because of this.

7. What did you think of the website? Was it helpful? What would be improved? (from Samulis)

It looks good the last time I saw it. I should check again. This time it wasn't extremely helpful since it was only actively used in the second round. Next time when it works better and quicker, it could be nice to use it more intensively. I like how you can listen to all of the submissions of the round, and how it displays all of the artwork and information.

8. Would you be willing to need to use one or multiple imposed melodies as a theme for one of the rounds?

Yeah, could be fun. But please hand out the melody as midi. I can usually figure it out, but it isn't much fun.

9. Which round was your favorite and why? (no need for an essay, a quick reason is fine)

2, because I liked the theme and there were many good entries.

An alternate voting system I want to propose is this:
-Give one point by default for each submission per round. Why? Because the more rounds each person enters, the more interesting the competition becomes, so that should be encouraged. If people submit they put effort in it, and effort should be rewarded. As it is now someone who decides to enter the third round only has as much an advantage as someone who submitted, voted and reviewed in the first 2 rounds but didn't get any votes. Which is of course more motivating for people to enter the ongoing competition, but not so much for the people who worked hard and got nothing.

-Give a point for handing in all of the votes. Like mentioned earlier, you can't vote for yourself, so by not voting you decrease the chance of others to win, thereby increasing your own chance. This should go for every round, because I don't see any other way that would work fairly.

This means you can get up to 6 bonus points. This sounds like a lot, and it is, but it has an advantage besides the ones I already mentioned. No one who put effort in it and actively took part to make it all work goes home disappointed. Besides if all put maximum effort in it they all get 6 points and it evens out.

-Multiple votes is a good idea. The more votes, the more balanced it will become and the larger the differences between the contestants. This will also counter balance the 6 default points more. Talking about more votes; why 2? Why not make it 3 instead? It's always a matter of the first 3 places in a competition, most people will have a top 3 in their head when they listen to the songs, so it seems logical to give 3 votes. It still seems and interesting idea to me to make the 3 votes weighted. Everyone likes one song better than the other, so everyone should make a top 3, where the first place gets 3 points, the second 2 and the third 1. I personally don't think this will make it more complex at all.

If I can make a suggestion for another round it's this; someone makes a silent film/animation (or at least without music), and the contestants need to create music for it that fits. Seems interesting to me.

The computer I'm working on is totally fried. I had to reformat the hard drive, but can't re-install the drivers for the sound card, because it didn't come with an installation disk, and it's so old it's no longer supported online. I borrowed the phone from a house mate, to listen to the songs, so I hear them only once with one very bad speaker and a Chinese woman trying to call her son (the house mate) interrupting it constantly. If my reviews don't make any sense that's my excuse, but at least I try. Here goes:

Track 1: Nice sounds and atmosphere. The synthetic instruments make me think of something unknown, which is what a lost civilization is. The notes sound a bit too random, but maybe the lost civilization just had different music than we do. The piano is a bit too artificial. Doesn't sound like you played it live. You should have made it more human, with different velocity levels. I've just watched Laputa, and this reminds me of it, and that's a good thing, because I like the film, and it's also about a lost civilization. Not underground though but in the sky.
Track 2: Quite epic. The strings at the beginning give a nice mood, but are a bit artificial. The other instruments aren't. Nice brass ensemble and harp. Gets better and better later on. Very bombastic. Good song.
Track 3: Is it an old film at the beginning? I like it. A lot of variety. Gibberish language along with the rest if the music reminds me of Cirque du Soleil. Is that an inspiration? (I know it is) I appreciate the voice acting. A lot going on. Makes me think of a very energetic cartoon. Fun to listen to. Nice variation.
Track 4: I like the choir. Climactic. Lengthy track. You put a lot of work in it. Very suspenseful. Sorry I can't say more. Nothing wrong with it. All's good.
Track 5: Nice a waltz. I like the piano. the strings at the beginning don't sound very realistic. Too much reverb on strings. On the piano the reverb is okay though. Make the strings sound a bit closer by than the piano.
Track 6: I like the track. Makes me think about exploring (ruins) of an underground civilization. Not a straight forward approach of the theme with all the electronic instruments, but that makes it stand out from the rest. Good job.
Track 7: Straight forward approach of the theme, I'd say, except that it sounds different from the other tracks, so maybe I'm wrong. Strange rhythm. Something's off, but it makes sense somehow. How did you do that, or is it just me? Think there's enough reverb on the pan flute, because it's a solo instrument. Makes the song more transparent. Should've been longer though. I like the melody of the second halve. You could've milked that melody out, and let it return in different styles. For example this part is the gate to the lost civilization, the next part is more cinematic like the other songs, and symbolizes an adventurous journey through underground ruins in search of treasures of the lost civilization. In the third part we find the lost civilization and they turn out to be well and alive, and the theme turns into an electronic dance party. Sorry I let myself go. No I understand you didn't have enough time to do all of that, and perhaps it would spoil the song, but I like the melody and this just tastes like more. Also I like how it starts dark, and gradually becomes lighter and more beautiful, and falls back into dark again. That evokes images in itself.
Track 8: Good atmosphere. Suspenseful. Dark. I like the high light piano over the darker low and heavy sounds. Does Indeed feel like a cavern. Quite cinematic.
Track 9: A bit too tight at the beginning, and that makes it sound midi/computerish. Gets better later on. I like the rhythms. Nice synths. Doesn't feel like a lost civilization theme by itself, but works well as final song in the list. Feels like end credits to a film about exploring lost civilizations.

Sorry my reviews were not of equal length. Most were too short, and the one for 7 was too long, but off topic (it's just a suggestion of what I would've done). I'm sorry if they weren't helpful to you, and I hope you get more helpful reviews from the other contestants.

Someone made a song based on an artwork by Captain Carrion as well a month before I did. I didn't see that, so you can call me lazy. How can you add an artwork as inspiration? Doesn't go under audio credits, because it gives an error message:

If you are trying to credit an external audio source, use the 'Additional Audio' form below.

Should I just put the artist under additional credits?
