That was a great round! Congrats to all of the people who won, almost won, or just made something great. Yes they were all great, so I've congratulated everyone. I voted track 15. All are wonderful.
Now I have to make two songs, one for N G M T '13 - Round 3, and one for A.i.m. Audio Contest. Both have to be done in a week or 2. How am I going to pull that off?
The second song I made for round 2 would've been perfect for this round. I shouldn't have sent it to Skye. Instead I could've kept it improved it and used it for this round. Guess I'll have to make a new and better submission. If only I have the time.

Okay, then it's all good. Like Breed said before "Reverb on a master buss is not uncommon. Its mainly used to make all your instruments sound more like they belong together." But with on the master buss I assume he means before the limiter.
I wouldn't go crazy with a stereo spreader(or whatever you guys want to call it) it messes up lotsa shit in the audio.
True. It's like putting distortion on the entire mix. It messes things up. It can create an interesting effect though. I you use it subtly. With a song with few instruments or on individual instruments you can be more bald. There are a lot of people that make the low bass frequencies completely mono and think that makes it sound better. It all depends on the songs and how you use it, but as always. If it sounds good, it sounds good.
Multiple reverb question is still left unanswered. What do you guys think of a Plate send and a Hall send in one song.
Like I said before (or I at least like I quoted Breed). The same reverb makes your instruments sound more the same. If you put Plate reverb on halve the tracks, and hall on the other halve, they will not sound as if they're in the same room. Usually you use the same type of reverb on all of the instruments, but you don't have to use the same amount. You can however use a combination of different types of reverb. E.g. for an orchestral track you can use various amounts of plate reverb. More for the instruments in the back, and less for the ones in the front. Then add a bit of Hall reverb on the entire mix. I'm not sure how much sense that would make though, but that way you'd have reverb from the plate the orchestra is playing on, which varies from section to section, and the reverb of the concert hall which is more or less the same for all the instruments. You can also purposely use different reverb if you want to set the instruments apart. Like a digital reverb on the electronic instruments, and a concert hall reverb on the orchestral instruments, so they don't blend.
It's your song. Never let yourself be limited by what others think if you think it sounds right. Who knows it's something revolutionary.
However, can you even technically call it a master if you put effects on it? It certainly defeats the purpose of mastering. Mastering is the final step of song creation, where you make the song louder while preventing it from clipping. You can add some equalization to separate the instruments a little better. You can use various forms of compression for all kinds of purposes. You can use a spreader to make the song sound wider, or the bass frequencies more in the middle or whatever you want. But either way, in the end of the mastering process the song should sound absolutely perfect and ready to go. Why on earth would you put another effect like reverb on it after that? You'd have to start your mastering all over again.
Putting reverb or any effect on the master is very unconventional, and is generally not considered a good thing to do. I for one think it's bad for the reasons I've mentioned.
What I often do however is put some reverb or distortion or whatever is suitable on the entire mix, right before the master. This is more part of the mixing process, or perhaps you can call it the first step of the mastering process since it's on the entire track. But I certainly don't put any effects after the limiter. The limiter is the limit.

When Person A and Person B collaborate in Phase X, and their track gets 3 votes, then in the Phase X results, we'd see:
Person A + Person B: 3 votes.
Then Phase Y comes along, and Person B decides not to take part in Phase Y, leaving Person A on his own. Person A submits a track and gets 4 votes. In the Phase Y results we'd see:
Person A + Person B: 3 votes
Person A: 4 votes
Problem solved.
So person A on his/her own and the team consisting of person A + B count as two individual contestants, with their own score? That does sound like a fair solution... There's at least one problem though. It would be kinda sucky for person A's hard work that the votes don't add up. e.g. If another person C gets 2 votes in round X and 3 in round Y, than person C ends with 5 points, and wins against person A even though person A bested person C in both rounds.

They should get -5 because despite they worked together they still suck! No not really. Just 0.
I'm fine with the -1 vote for each of the individual collaborators. Though I feel a little odd about this, because collabs change the scoring system so much. Perhaps in would be best in the future to not allow collabs, or to allow collabs only if they remain a team throughout the entire competition and they'll have to share the prize. No divisions of the score of subtractions. A team is treated as an individual contestant. Those are my ideas for the next N G M T.
Here are my reviews:
Track 1: Good guitar. The drums weren't too great though. Too artificial. Didn't like the sound of the kick and the toms. The crash was too loud. The snare was okay. The fade out was strange. I liked the feel of the second part. The melody wasn't great though. Didn't stick. The notes seemed a little random to me. Perhaps they were well thought out, but I couldn't really discover the structure. The samples sounded quite good.
Track 2: Has that futuristic feel. I like the sweeps and other sound effects. Nice reverb on the piano. The drums were a bit tame. Could've had more impact, to separate them more from the rest. Puts you in a nice trance, but drags on for a little long. I like the atmosphere. Wasn't blown away.
Track 3: Very lighthearted. Didn't expect that. But it works. Futuristic sound with all the synths and the choir. The guitar and lightheartedness gave it a bit of a town feel. A town in a bubble. Didn't much convey the outside thread though. Sounds like it needs a follow up song for that.
Track 4: Minimal music I'd say. Changes key from Am to D by introducing a new melody, but without changing the bass and percussion. Unusual but effective. I don't like the sudden ending and the fact the second part is an exact repetition of the first. Then again I didn't immediately notice it so it would work great as a loop. Especially because of the variation in mood and the already repetitive nature.
Track 5: Good sounds overall. Reminds me more of a trip on a snowy mountain though. Could just be me. The synth lead is a bit of an odd one out. The only strict electronic instrument. I don't completely dislike it, but it doesn't blend in. Nice build up. More and more instruments contribute. Creates a nice climactic effect. Lots of repetition, with minimal changes and additions. Not a bad thing. The song remains interesting. But I would've liked a completely different part as a bridge, with a different chord scheme and perhaps a different key altogether, to break up the repetition. The ending is a little abrupt.
Track 6: Nothing about this track I dislike. Quite energetic and good sounds. Also futuristic because of the synthesizers and effects on the instruments. I liked it when the strings came in. I would've wanted a more epic repetition of the main theme, with added strings, and where the other instruments go completely loose. To be hones I don't completely hear the theme here. It could be used for a biodome, but I think the song is too specific for an action driven scene, and a not extremely threatening one at that. Reminded me for example of the Blitz Ball games in FFX. Overall I like it a lot.
Track 7: Good piece. Very exciting. Sounds like a professional film score. Building up suspense at the beginning. Then action. Then resolve. The final part also sounds quite beautiful, But I think I would've preferred it as a bridge, that it would be shorter, and the action part returned. Or alternately a sad part as bridge, then let the action part return more vehement and end with a shorter version of the beautiful part it ends with now. Imo that would be a better build up, but it sounds nice though I like it. It would be great as a film score.
Track 8: Another cinematic score. I like those electronic moody sound effects. Go well with the orchestral instruments. Really what I would expect to hear with a biodome theme. Has that sad mood of a world after the apocalypse. Also hopeful and determined to live on. Epic build up.
Track 9: Also a good track. Though I'm a little less impressed after all I've heard. Nice ambient mood. I like the atmosphere. Relaxing, yet with a hint of menace, that grows over time. I miss some base though. Especially when the hard hitting snare drum sounds, there isn't enough base to support it. Either a heavy drum like a basedrum, a taiko or a timpany, and/or a double base string section would be nice. Good job.
Track 10: This was really obvious who made this... But I'm not allowed to guess so I keep my mouth shut. I like the song. Nice break from the other ones. Apart from the lyrics it didn't extremely remind me of a biosphere, but at the same time that makes it more unique, and I could really use something else. The text is well written. The buildup isn't bad. Could've been more than it is though I feel. The bridge (or whatever you call that between 1:59 and 2:28 nicely breaks up the song. I like that. But instead for a more quiet part I'd go the other way and go for a part that really lifts the song. The part after the break is also disappointing. A good and obious choice you return to the chorus, but it would've been better if you turned it into a real climax and repeated it more often. Great song, but tastes like more.
Track 11: Not bad. I could feel the oppressive biodome mood. Still it feels something is missing. Maybe with more sound effects it would be more interesting. It gets better towards the end. If more effects like at the end were at the beginning, and you keep the climactic build up you have, it would be better. I think the instruments don't blend well.
Track 12: Atmospheric piece. Good sounds. Works well in a film. A little less to listen to by itself. A little to unsubstantial for that. It changes all the time, but also a lot of repetition. Also a bit too straightforward, and not too many unique sounds. Maybe I sound a little too negative here. I like film music. This is quite an alright song for me to listen to.
Track 13: Rather short but still nice. I suppose that was a tv or radio tuning. I get what you're going for. But the distortion was a little too digital to get the right effect. The part afterwards was also a little too happy. The happy distorted sounds of the beginning are quite menacing, and would work best to introduce a darker more action driven song for contrast. The part afterwards sounds like an intro for a news program. Which fits the parts that come before, but I'd rather have something that contrasts.
Track 14: Also a piece that focuses more on the positive aspect of life in a biodome. Until... It get's exciting. More like a hear play than a song, but that's not against the rules. In fact that's quite original, and sets you apart from the rest. Not too bad acting. Would've been better if the acting was a bit more convincing, and the voices more distinguished. Interesting piece.
Track 15: Thought I heard everything and nothing could blow me away anymore. But this one just did. Nice sounds. The industrial ones in combination with the water and birds. Sets up the right mood. Blends in nicely with the atmosphere of the rest of the music. Great instruments. I really like the harp. Reminds about something out of World of Goo.
Track 16: After track 15 I was sure anything would disappoint but I was wrong. This also reminds me of World of Goo. Nice ambient score. Not really dark and threatening, but much happier and lighthearted. Would work well as credit roll after film with a happy ending. Perfect closure for the playlist.
We indeed have a soundtrack for a biodome film/game/project. Such great music. I like the music of this round better than the previous one.
After so many great tracks it's difficult to choose. The tracks I liked best are 15, 8, 16, 6 and 7. Though the only melody that stuck was that of 4...
I'll send a PM with my eventual vote.

I like how at the beginning none of the links actually worked. Then they linked to soundcloud. And eventually all of the tracks are nicely embedded into the thread. It didn't even take additional posts before it got to work.
Trying to guess which is my own track by looking at the waves (clouds). I can't really.
16 submissions. That's only one less than the previous round. More than I expected. Good job everyone. I'll write a review for each track shortly.

Okay, got it. The rules will not change mid contest, so not for round 2 and 3. But they may change for the N G M T 14. We'll see how it fairs then. Looking forward to it already.
It's not going too bad now. Generally I think when the rules are the same for everyone, all have the same problems so it's fair anyway. But I think more than 1 vote will make it more interesting. Also I like Peter Satera's idea of the ranked votes, only I think 5 votes would be a bit much for so few participants. How about 3 votes worth 3, 2 and 1 point?
I'm not sure what you're asking here. You won't get a point added to your vote score if you only vote once, but you will if you vote twice. Basically incentive to vote for two people - which would normally also lessen your chances of winning.
That is what I was asking. Sounds good. You make a good point there I hadn't even thought about. If you don't vote at all you effectively increase your chance of winning. Because you can't vote for yourself, you have to vote for others, increasing their chance of winning thus decreasing your own chance. But by receiving a reward for voting you increase your own chance of winning by voting. That system both stimulates people to vote, and prevents people from abusing the system by not voting. Clever. Once again the reward for voting is only implemented in N G M T 14 right?
Knowing that I shouldn't vote in round 2 and 3... But I will do it anyway, because I don't want to be an ass and abuse the system. I'd like to support this contest.

ALSO: In the next contest, the following voting system will begin.
Each team will be allowed to vote twice.
They may not vote for the same track twice, and may not vote for their own track at all - penalty being disqualification.
If a team uses both their votes, their track's vote count will increase by 1 as if somebody had voted for them.
Aside from that, normal rules apply.
I'll be looking for any kinks in this system and working them out - if any of you can find some, please tell me and we can make it better.
Talking about being talkative. Have you seen the Voice Acting Contest 10. It has reached 14 pages. The A.i.m has 11 pages for the Discussion Thread and 2 for the actual contest so far. This one has about 10 pr 11 pages, if you add up all of the threads, so we're doing so bad either. We'll have to see in the end who gets most posts in the end. None of these contests are over yet.
With "next contest", do you mean this 2nd round, the 3rd round or NGMT 14? Not sure if it's fair if the rules change mid contest. I'm not a 100% sure who will have an advantage or disadvantage here. Probably the people who entered the previous round will have a disadvantage, because they could've had more votes. All the people who enter the next one or two rounds will have an advantage because their potential reward has increased.
I'm personally in favour of having more votes. It makes the results less influenced by chance. The places are set more apart. So less chance of getting joint positions. Less chance of getting 0 votes.
The only thing I feel unsure about is changing the rules mid contest like I said. It gives an advantage of one round over the other.
If you're going to implement the 2 votes rule for the next two rounds, I'd say they should each count for only halve a vote, making the average vote each get in round 2 and 3 the same as in round 1.
What about the rewards you would get for voting? You get one vote if you vote twice.
At 6/6/13 06:17 PM, PeterSatera wrote: So the solution is actually quite simple.
Everyone gets 5 votes instead of one. These votes are cast in 5 points, 4 points, 3 points 2 points and 1 point. So you choose the top five songs and distribute your points in a deserved manner. It's a fairer system because more points will be received overall per round, and less scarcely as it is now.
That sounds like a nice system for NGMT 14. Not for the next round though, because that would mean the 5 points you got for this round mean nothing in the end.

Since I got 0 votes and that's as little as I would've gotten when I didn't make anything at all.I see where you're coming from. And maybe this is something we could look into for the future skye since you were saying feedback for this contest is welcomed. The quantity of round one participants at this point in time is about double. Meaning that potential the voting ratio is still 1:1. However as soon as someone favours in one round, the the ratio of that round out weighs the ratio of the second. It means I do in fact have an unfair advantage as with only 8 participants (for now), the voting of round one can infact make a large impact on the competition, even with later rounds.
In the unlikely event I get 2 votes this round and 3 the next, I'm only on par with Peter Satera, and I don't even know how well he will fare in round 3 himself. I might as well give up now...
But the same logic applies Sour. There could be a surge of participants in round 3, meaning more votes are cast. Also you could look at it this way. With only 8 particpants (so far) the number of entries for competition is reduced, so your chances rise with getting a vote.
Maybe it should be mandatory to participate in all rounds? Thats the only solution I can think of. It also means that those who work harder deserve a better chance...I think. Im not sure, the maths is actually quite mind boggling. Is anyone a genius and can come up with a formula to make the voting power the same every round depending on the number of participants?
Good points there. When there are fewer participants you have a higher chance of winning that round. In any case everyone is allowed to vote once, which means that in every round no matter how many participants, the average vote each get is 1. I think this system is rather balanced over all. I also like how no one knows who made what submission. Makes the contest extra interesting.
So if you want to win a round, you'd have most chance with the round with least participants. If you want to win the entire competition it doesn't matter which rounds you enter, because the average is 1 vote every round, but you'd best enter as many rounds as you can. Because you expect to get 3 votes if you enter every round, 2 for only 2 rounds, 1 for one round, and 0 for no rounds.
The only way to increase your chances is by making better songs that fit the theme. Problem is of course you are limited by your skills, and you never know what others will like.
Also the more voters there are, the less the competition is influenced by chance. But that's just a basic statistics rule.

Btw I've changed my mind about my submission. I want to use my first submission for the contest. Not the second one. Probably I'll regret this when I don't win, but I won't win anything with the second submission either.
Eventually I will submit both submissions to Newgrounds, so you won't miss a thing (if you care at all that is).

The first instruments I got were harmonicas. I got a lot from my parents on a very early age. Also on fairs with those games you have to pull a chord to get a price, I got a lot of harmonicas. I must've had over 20. My parents also had an electric organ from the 60s or 70s. My dad had it from when he was still in a band. It was second handed then so it's pretty old. Unfortunately it broke down, and was too expensive to repair. I can't tell you what brand or serial number it was, but nothing fancy like a hammond organ, but it was quite an investment I'm told and the thing was huge. For a long time it was stored in the loft behind the Punch and Judy show. I always used it to accompany the shows when it still worked. Like an organ in an old cinema with silent films. My dad also had a crappy accoustic guitar. The E and A snares were baseguitar snares. The D and G snares nylon. The B and E steel. I don't know if that's common or not, but I didn't like the sound. He also had an electric guitar which looked pretty fancy golden coloured with glitters and all. It even had a whammy bar. Unfortunately by the time I picked it up the neck was bend so badly because of the moisture it sounded permanently muted. The next instrument I had was a toy casio keyboard I borrowed indefinitely from a friend. Me my brother and my friends made a lot of songs recorded on tape using that keyboard, my dad's instruments, my brother's tin whistle and whatever we could find for percussion. We also used Mario Paint. Not the emulations, but the actual cartridge. Later we recorded it with the computer when we had a free version of Sony Acid that came with the cd-rom writer. We combined the live vocals and instruments with loops and samples we cut into pieces to create our own things. We bought loop based programs like Magix hip hop and techno maker, which were pretty bad, but it cam with more loops we could take samples from, and effects we could used like equalizers, reverb, a virtual turntable and such. Then I got my first midi notation program from a friend of the father of a friend of mine. Music write plus it was called. I used the midi from my parents pc soundcard, as well as the build in sounds of the motherboard, which was even worse but produced a distinct lo-fi sound that i was quite fond of. I used as well the Yamaha Soft synth that came with the pc version of final fantasy VII, and the upgrade of VIII. A much richer sound than that of the sound card. Later I bought Propellerhead Rebirth (before they made Reason), which was a virtual Roland TR-808 and two TB-303s without sequencer. Impossible to operate, just like the real deal, but such a great sound. Then I bought a much more expensive Casio keyboard. I was quite disappointed with the sound, but it taught me how to play keys which was useful. Then I bought Reason 1, because I saw it at a fair, and it was made by Propellerhead, the same creators of Rebirth. I've been using and upgrading it ever since. At some point I had a version of Cubase that I got from a daughter of a friend of my mother. It was a nice program but glitched up all the time, so I stuck with Reason. Later I bought a Yamaha psr-3000 because i wanted a better keyboard but couldn't afford a Tyros. Because I wanted to better record the keyboard I bought a Tascam us-122 mkii, and a sennheiser microphone to record vocals and other things. That's pretty much where I'm at now.

There in lies the problem. I'm not sure which one is better. The first one is more straight forward, accessible, catchy and all, but some parts are a little too happy, and I'm not sure it will make many people think about a dome. The second one is more cinematic, unique, and I think it fits the theme better. But it's rather quirky and I'm not sure everyone will appreciate it. I'm not even sure myself.
