Topic: Freeware 8-bit audio unit

Posted: 09/09/09 12:20 AM

Forum: Audio

Hey all, I looked through the first few pages of the forum and I didn't find anything that seems to specifically be what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for an 8-bit plugin/audio unit (.component file) that'll work on a mac (specifically garageband...but I'm pretty sure if it works on a mac in general it works in garageband). I found one, Magical 8 bit, which is really good but it's not freeware as it says that use in commercial projects is prohibited. Theoretically I could just use it and nobody would probably know...but just in case I need one that is free for use in any project commerical or otherwise.

If such a free plugin doesn't exist, then if someone could refer me to a good one for purchase (I'm willing to spend a little money, but not if I don't have to) that'd be much appreciated.

Based on the advice here, and a few conclusions on my own, I have decided to turn down the offer. Suppose I'll save time for college and for when another (better) job offer comes along.

Thanks for the help guys. I really appreciate the insight.

Thanks for the responses guys.

@nathen:

The game is meant to be an MORPG, though the actual scale I'm not sure. Probably not going to be an MMORPG, put it that way. Apparently he wants me to write 14 tracks in total, a few of which are short, but the rest don't require a certain length so I assume 2-3 minutes. According to him, "time doesn't matter, content does." But the fact that it's being developed in part for a competition makes me think otherwise.

He's working with six others, three of which are only doing minor programming jobs, the rest are doing more major work. Budget, I'm assuming, is nil, considering he only offered a share of the profits rather than money upfront. I don't think any of the others are making anything upfront either. As for the bookkeeping department, this guy doesn't have any sort of company, it's just an indie project being developed by a number of people.

Also, I'm assuming that since he's not 18, his parents have to enter any contract for him? Is that correct?

Hi guys.

Just curious if anybody has any more experience than I do with contract stuff and could help me out.

I was contacted the other day by an indie developer who was interested in having me write music for his game project. Supposedly this project is meant to be sold upon completion and he offered as payment to give me a cut of the profits. The game is also being entered in a competition (or competitions) which offer cash prizes.

The trouble, however, is twofold. First of all, I'd like a contract to protect myself since I don't know this guy over the internet, but unfortunately I've never had to use one before so I don't know what I'm doing.

Secondly, this person is only 16 (I'm only 18 myself). The trouble isn't necessarily his age (he seems to be pretty skilled, from what I have seen), but rather, the fact that since he is under 18 he can't legally enter into a contract (at least, in the US, where we're both from).

So how might I go about presenting the concept of a contract to him, and how would I get him/his parents (?) to sign the contract so that it becomes legal? What hitches are there since he's not yet 18? Should I even bother with this job?

Thanks for any help or advice, it's much appreciated!

Yeah, the audio portal is a place for you to upload your music for other people to listen to and use, not for people to share their favorite music. Since you haven't uploaded anything yet, if you try to upload something that wasn't made by you, you'll actually be banned from submitting anything else....so be careful.

No the job of a mod is to moderate - and to notice who is being a jerkoff and who isn't - in such a tight knit community such as this you really don't need a report system like that becasue everyone knows everybody :)

Well if reporting power was based on whistle strength and/or experience, it wouldn't be such a problem. In addition, a report system only helps the moderators moderate better and quicker. There's so much content being posted on the bbs so quickly, especially in the general forum; it'd be nice if members could assist the mods so things get done quicker. IMHO the benefits greatly outweigh the potential problems.

And besides, forum reports would be about a post, not a user; though once the moderator reads the post he/she may decide to take action against the user who wrote the reported post. So even if someone has that little of a life that they'll take the time to sign up for a bunch of alts just to report a few posts by a member they don't like, after the moderator reads the "bad" reports they can take action against the member who made them, whether it be bans or just lost whistle points.

It'd be just like the whistle system, but better, because with the abovementioned queue whistled posts wouldn't just "go away" like flash does.

This is all some great insights, thanks.

I suppose I got the ABABCB structure from my father who writes stuff with vocals. He taught me what he knew about music, but then I got into writing instrumental/ambient/etc. and I guess it all just stuck with me. Ambient and downtempo are really my favorite genres to write in, so I guess i should start looking into some different types of structures. Hehe. Anyone with some advice for a type of structure that works ambient/downtempo?

I agree. Since abusive reviews can actually be removed, a system that takes number of reviews into account would actually be great; especially since the concept of "experience" itself implies that as one does something, one gets better at it. Which isn't really true with clicking a button to vote, but could be more applicable to something like reviewing.

Standards would have to be raised for what constitutes a "good" review, though; another site I've been on with a system that is based mainly on reviews (literally; reviews are like cash there) simply encourages users to write useless reviews that are just above the requirements. If we put extra weight on reviews without upping the standards, then people would simply write short reviews that provide no real help to the creator but which aren't considered "abusive" by the guidelines put forward in the FAQ page.

I'm not sure who does or doesn't use that term "repetition structure" to refer to what I'm thinking of, so in case I'm completely clueless about what it's really called, I'll try and explain.

By "repetition structure", I mean the traditional ABABCB flow of songs, A being a verse, B being the chorus, and C being the bridge. This is something I commonly see with songs with vocals in them.

Now obviously there are no "rules" in writing music, just guidelines. But for some reason, I tend to write my instrumental/video game music with the same or similar structure; except of course, instead of verse/chorus/bridge, it's just part a/b/c. It seems to work for me.

However, when I listen to a lot of the music here and in various video games, I tend to hear setups more like ABAC, or even just ABC. A lot of electronica doesn't even have much repetition (relative to sections of the music; of course though there's generally a lot of repetition from measure to measure).

My question to you is, what is the repetition structure you tend to use with your instrumental/video game music? Any other insights would be helpful...and useful for discussion, etc. Do you think there needs to be any sort of repetitive structure in most music?

^^This.

Honestly, I don't find this place to be as asshole-ish as a lot of others out there, but frankly it could be better. I've experienced my fair share of it, back when I was less clued in to the general thoughtforms and ideals of the forum. I'm still not really "a part" of the Audio Community here, I guess, only because I haven't spent enough time on the AF to get to know anyone; though I do intend to be at some point after mingling for enough time.

I make it a point to be respectful myself (though I used to be a dick on other forums, before I learned better); but this is indeed the internet. People come here because they want a chance to speak however they want with little to no repercussions.

However, I didn't realize until reading some of the posts inside this thread that moderators actually took action against the "assholes" of the forum. I figured they figured it was just part of internet life; but I'm actually happy to read some of the moderators' posts in this thread. It's not that I had any reason to think they didn't care; just that I had no reason to think they did.

Knowing that moderators would like to crack down on this type of stuff, maybe a simple "report" button could be implemented in a similar fashion to the whistle system in the site. That is, after a number of people report a post, it gets placed in a queue. Most other forums I've been to have a system like that; and if it takes a number of members clicking the button for the post to be added to the report queue, moderators will more easily be able to know where the "problem posts" are without running the risk of some random member cluttering up the queue by going around reporting whatever he can click on.

I know that in my time moderating a few forums a number of months ago, the reports sent by members were a godsend because they cut the time I needed to invest in moderation on any given day in half, at least. I don't know what the specific conditions are like when moderating this place, obviously because I'm not a mod here; but I do know from experiences elsewhere that a report system tends to be really helpful for a site's staff. There's a report system for reviews and under judgment flashes; why not bbs posts?

You can't use any copyrighted material, at all, if you want to be entirely legal. Doesn't matter which section you use, or the size of the section; it's copyrighted and you *can* get sued (and if it's recognizable by a judge, you'll lose).

The songs in the AP, however, are under a specific license:

Attribution: You must give credit to the artist.

Noncommercial: You may not use this work for commercial purposes unless you make specific arrangements with the artist under another license.

Share Alike: If you alter, transform, or build upon this music, you may distribute the resulting creation only under a license identical to this one.

Thus, you can use the songs in the Newgrounds AP which are under this license for your noncommercial flashes regardless of what section you use, as long as you give the music artist proper credit.

Topic: Preloader audio

Posted: 07/14/09 03:04 AM

Forum: Flash

Well after toying around with it, I discovered at least the solution, though I don't understand all of the problem. I went to publishing settings, and changed the sound to 64 kbps / medium quality instead of 16 kbps / fastest quality. This fixed the beeps but the static at the end of the loading animation (as the logo phases out) doesn't even play. Like literally not at all. I didn't realize the phase-out static was even supposed to be there until I looked into the movie clip preloader object and saw it on one of the layers.

Anyways, after trying a few more things to get the static to play, I discovered the sound was set to "stream". I had set stream audio to 64 kbps / medium quality (and higher quality, too) but no luck - instead, what I had to do was change it to "event" and it plays fine, though it won't sync with phase-out animation if for some reason the flash lags.

But when figuring out things like this, I like to know why something works rather than just that it works. Why wouldn't stream play but event would?

Hi,

I recently got flash professional 8 (FINALLY). I downloaded a preloader (the one titled, "Tank Loader"), and added it into my flash by copying the "movie clip" into the first frame of my flash. When I test it, it works, graphically anyways. But unfortunately, when it gets to the fully loaded state, no beeps play; instead, very low bits of static plays right where the beeps are supposed to be playing. So for example,

Test movie
Tank logo "fills up" (because there's really nothing to load in my flash yet)
Tank logo phases out
Two low bits of static play where the beeps should be (as "ready!" flashes)
Goes to the first scene of my movie, which is incomplete

When I play the beep in the library, it plays fine. It also plays fine when I choose "test movie" on the actual preloader .fla file. But when testing my movie by hitting "test movie" or after exporting, I get the low static, and I don't know why.

I'm using Flash 8, with AS2, if that makes a difference.

What's funny, is that for the longest time, since I was so young, I thought it was all real. Like sometimes my head would REALLY be stuck to the pillow, and I was afraid that one day I would never be able to get it off =p

I wouldn't say learning programming gets you better at logic; rather, I'd say learning logic allows you to be good at programming. In other words, you can't really be good at programming unless you understand basic concepts of logic, such as logical and, or, not, xor, conditionals, etc. and how and why they work.

Get a website and post your stuff there, and link in your signature. That way if it gets blammed here on NG, you can still put it up on your personal site. A lot less exposure, yeah, but it's better than never posting it anywhere.

Or you can just keep it on your comp and show your friends, or something. People on Newgrounds aren't fair, that's just life, no offense. A lot of people who write spam have a bunch of friends who come and rate up their submission just so that it passes judgment. Others go around voting zero on every submission they see. It happens.
