Title IX never forbids any school from having a football team, and the ratio of male to female students enrolled at a school is irrelevant - it's all about having equal sports for both sexes. Schools will say that they're "not allowed" to do things, but generally it's more like they "aren't allowed to do it in the totally cheapskate way they would want to, so they won't." If you fund a football team, you must fund an equivalent number of women's sports, and most schools without football teams either won't or can't shell out the money to have both football and the required women's programs.

Also, I think I heard they only had 2,000 undergraduates. Can graduate students play in NCAA? I mean, I'm sure they are all way too busy, but could they if they wanted?

You can only play in the NCAA for four years total for any given sport, so if you didn't max out as an undergrad, you can play as a graduate student. It has to be for the same school where you studied as an undergrad, and there's a finite window for eligibility.

We're rapidly getting to a point where just about every college or university is a "ratio school" because so many more women than men are getting degrees. It's pretty wild. My alma mater was a 55-45 female-to-male school when I started, and is now something like 65-35.

Also, any part of the DC area with a lot of nonprofit headquarters located there is going to be heavily female in terms of the professionals you see wandering around, so Georgetown, some parts of Arlington and Alexandria, and the aforementioned Golden Triangle are big-time hotspots for gorgeous, idealistic women.

You've missed DC Restaurant Week, but Alexandria is doing its own that continues through this weekend. Here's a list of participating restaurants. $35 for a three-course meal for one or a $35 dinner for two, and some places are doing $3.50 desserts. For some of these places, that is a MASSIVE discount. Definitely check it out, since you're in the area now. We went to Ruth's Chris during the DC Restaurant Week and saved a bundle, and it was amazing.

Arlington has a fair number of attractive women wandering around, but the Golden Triangle is like Hot Chick Central. Lunchtime on a workday when the weather is nice is amazing.

Really it's just like any other sound. Long, steady tones, even in human audible range, are very good for getting a dog's attention, as are very short concussive sounds. Stuff in the middle tends to get ignored. It just so happens that dogs can hear pitches that we can't.

My dog has radar ears, this is the position we call "yellow alert." He can also stand them up completely straight on "full alert" but I can't seem to find a photo.

This yellow alert was inspired by geese, which he had never seen before and was considering whether or not he wanted to chase.

That's part of why I always add chocolate chips to my oatmeal cookies. Loves me some oatmeal raisin, but if there's no nice semi-sweet chocolate dotted throughout, it's just not the same.

If anyone is going to try them, I neglected to mention that the best way to handle the honey is to spray the inside of the measuring cup with a little Pam or whatever, or put a tiny bit of vegetable oil in it and swirl it around if you don't have cooking spray. That way the honey doesn't stick to the measuring cup and just slides right out into the mixing bowl.

Also, a half cup of applesauce is exactly 1.5 of those little Mott's cups for putting in lunches and stuff. You can use an equal amount of canola oil, but I hate putting oil in my cookies.

I'm tempted to buy some big chunk applesauce for the next time I make these and see if that enhances them. I kind of like cookies that aren't uniform throughout, and having chunks of apple sounds good.

The recipe's right there sweetie ;)

Oatmeal raisin chocolate chip. Much less sugary than the Toll House recipe, much higher fiber content, so they're actually kind of "good" for you. Nice soft texture and not nearly as overpoweringly sweet as some cookies. The original recipe I based it on called for vegetable oil - I think that's absolutely disgusting, so I substituted applesauce. It makes the batter less smooth, but, come on, they're oatmeal cookies, they're going to be lumpy.

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cup rolled ("old fashioned") oats
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp cinnamon
1/2 cup clover honey
1/2 cup smooth applesauce
1 tbsp molasses
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chocolate chips

Combine wet ingredients and blend until smooth, then add in oats. Steel-cut oats will work too, if you want a smoother final product. Combine all dry ingredients in a separate bowl, blending with a fork. Add into wet mixture gradually and then fold in raisins and chocolate chips. Chill dough about half an hour. Heat oven to 325. Drop dough in rounded tablespoons onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake 15-20 minutes depending on desired softness.

Here's the result:

The bacon didn't actually perform as well as I had hoped - apparently my smoker won't actually produce smoke below a certain temperature, and the bacon needed to be done lower than that temperature. I pulled it out and carved the bones off, and they're in the stock pot now to make soup stock. I'm still going to slice it, and it looks like it will still be tasty, just not as smoky as I wanted.

I turned the temp up on the smoker and smoke is now pouring out of it, so I decided to toss a couple of fresh apples in to cook up. Smoked fruit is something I wanted to experiment with anyway.

But I can hear him griping now about how bourbon's for drinking, not for cooking...

He could probably do the hickory on its own, or replace the applewood with another sweet fruit or nut wood, like pecan or cherry.

And it was cheap shitty bourbon, you wouldn't want to drink it. The mop I applied was also bourbon-based - bourbon and Dr. Pepper, in fact. The high sugar content helped produce that nice bark.

I did my beef brisket and pork spareribs with mesquite, but the pulled pork was a 50/50 combination of hickory and applewood, soaked in bourbon and water.

At 7/3/10 10:01 PM, Proteas wrote: That's some nice looking pork roast you got there. What kind of seasoning do you use (if any)?

I start with a yellow mustard rub, which doesn't do a whole lot in terms of flavor but gives the rub something to stick to and helps give the bark a good color. The rub was brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. It sat in the rub overnight and then spent six hours in the smoker the next day, then rested about 45 minutes before I pulled it. Wound up filling two aluminum half-sheet catering pans with shredded meat - took one to our friend's party and kept the other.

I don't think our friend mentioned to his wife that we were planning on bringing meat, so there wound up being WAY too much food.

We discovered that our entry to the annual shot contest looks an awful lot like blood...and tastes pretty damned good. Equal parts vodka, chocolate syrup, grenadine, and kahlua.

Nice dark old-blood color, pretty thick and sticky, and tastes exactly like a cherry cordial.

Sorry I've been absent, folks. Life has been a wee bit hectic.

The one fun bit of information I wanted to share was that my 30" electric smoker arrived today. I'm going to be doing a brisket on Sunday and some homemade bacon next week most likely. Everyone in my family is totally getting meat for Christmas this year.

Not at all. I had a friend who worked in a Victoria's Secret, and she said a good 30% of their customers were men buying things for girlfriends/wives. It's really no different from me being in the underwear and sock aisle in the men's department at Target - pretty much everyone just assumes you're buying for someone else. You might find a few women here and there who are weird about it, but they're usually weird about shopping for bras in general, whether there are men in the store or not.
