The referral system is actually true, but I am not sure how many experience points you got from it.
It was discontinued because people would abuse it, make alts and credit themselves.

Before late 01/early 02, I have no idea.
There may of been a different way to get experience points, Hardly relevant anymore.

I know you could get an experience point amount ending in 5 for only creating a profile and not signing up for email updates or vice versa back in the day.
