Topic: Broaden Your Musical Taste

Posted: 11/29/06 12:00 AM

Forum: General

I have no problem with doing this. As a musician (20 years and counting) and a composer (10 years and counting), I quite enjoy listening to various types of music; not just for genre research either.

While I am partial to some genres more than others, there are still songs I like within the genres I'm not too fond of.

I, personally, would find an external program to use. Hell, even Sound Recorder in your start menu should work. Once you've recorded it, convert it to MP3 (unless you want to use the raw WAV file) and import it and have a grand ol' time.

CDex seems to work just fine for me. It lets you define the bitrate you want to rip/convert at.

Funny, I'm running Flash 8 and I don't have that problem at all. Maybe try converting the MP3s with another program like CDex .

Just shooting in the dark here, but I notice that with video codecs, you can have a series of AVI files that will play in Windows Media Player and some that won't because of the codecs used to compress them.

You don't suppose that maybe the same can be true for audio codecs?

Adobe Premiere is awesome, but it's freaking expensive. I knew some guys that worked with it at the old church I used to go to ages ago.

iTunes plays MP4, but what I would do is find a convertor.

There's an old trick to using WinAmp to forcewrite WAVs of everything you plug into it, but if there's an easier way, that'd be better. If not, just google "MP3 to WAV conversion WinAmp" or something of the like to pull up the tutorial.

1) A small pikachi clock I picked out of a garbage can at my old church just because it still functioned and I felt like doing something spontaneous like trash digging. (Spontaneous compulsions are a rarety in my life with the kind of person I am, so usually when it happens, it's classic).

2) Sure. Can't have too much gore. (This is coming from the same person who didn't like Starship Troopers....well, it was more the dumb factor than the gore factor).

Topic: Syncing sound with video

Posted: 11/28/06 08:49 AM

Forum: Flash

Thank you very much, guys.

HappySheep: Basically what I was doing was importing the foley along with the music I composed specifically to fit the time constraints just to level out the volume (so the music doesn't drown out necessary foley audio), then mixing the two down together in my audio program so I could import them as one file.
So it's good that you mentioned that, because that's the route I'm taking with it, and that advice is especially helpful.

Convering to Wav, really?

I wonder how the audio filetype affects that, but I wouldn't honestly know anyhow.

That just seems strange (plus, I hate what flash does to music files, but I guess that's something I'll have to get used to if I'm going to use flash), because I thought it'd have something to do with where the sound was placed (whether it be a layer or attached to an object)

Well, at any rate, I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

Forum: Flash

I'm sure this is a question that's been asked dozens of times.

How would I go about getting the sound to stay in sync to the flash video? I won't lie: I'm still pretty new with Flash, and there are many things I'm still trying to get used to.

I attempted to set a Music Layer where I imported/pasted the sound with the video, but it doesn't always stay in sync. From watching other flash movies I'm convinced (unless I'm horribly wrong) that there is a way to pull it off.

Actually, I believe NG disabled the ability to successfully save an SWF file through the HTML source like you used to be able to. You end up downloading a dead file that directs you here.

I can understand wanting to know how to ActionScript things, but that's what tutorials are for.
Besides, I don't think anyone would appreciate you decompiling their work just to learn how they did it.

There's always Hypersonic, which is not the greatest quality, but has a good enough variety to be handy.

Otherwise, I would highly recommend MusicLab's RealGuitar for acoustic guitar. As far as bass is concerned, I usually stick with Hypersonic or Edirol Super Quartet, but I've never tried Virtual Bass yet.

Buttsecks as well :)

I can very much respect that. Music production within software is definitely in no comparison to recording, editing, and mixing your own live instruments. There's a lot less grunt work involved in working with programs (some of that I'm glad to be spoiled and not have to worry about).

You know, considering I'm the noob, I can't understand a goddamn thing you're saying because you don't type in very coherent messages.

I've never used Audacity, but I can honestly say that if FL Studio isn't good enough for your tastes (which considering what you seem to be wanting to do would be appropriate), then don't expect much else in the realm of free software.

At 11/25/06 11:29 PM, tankbusta wrote: what are soundfonts.....and vst's ????

sorry i am quite a noob at this

Soundfonts are a lot like text fonts, only dealing with sound. FL Studio is good with managing those (think of them as a palette of sound; you can download some that will let you create chip music much like the old 8-bit Nintendo).

VSTi's are virtual instruments. They are audio plugins that are used in a MIDI interface, so instead of using the GM settings for your MIDI output, it will be routed into the virtual instrument allowing you to output more high quality sound.

FL Studio's Website

This program has a free fully functioning demo. The only limitation is that you can't save your project so you'll have to finish what you start.

I can't promise you'll understand the interface, but it has some good tutorials on the site.
