I've heard that mic-ing drums is the biggest bitch in studio recording. One you get it right, though, you'll also need to set EQs to bring out the right sound you're looking for.
When I do drums (granted that I work in a MIDI environment), I always set the following:
Kick -- set the lo's up at least 2.0, set the 2 mids up close to the center of the graph and notch them up at least 4.0 and close together. This brings out the wet punch sound that goes very well with alternative/metal.
Snare -- set the lo's up at least 1.0, but bring out the mids a tad while keeping the hi's down. This gives the snare more of a beatpunch than a tingy sound. Also, I always set a "room" reverb on the snare alone. It gives the sound more of an 80s feel.
Cymbals and Hats, I just bring up the hi's a little, and I usually set the toms along with the kick.
That's just what I do. I'm not saying it's the magical answer; for all I know, it might be a hell of a lot more difficult with a real drumset, but just some suggestions to throw out there.
