I don't think he was talking about a MIDI creator. I think he was more referring to a piano VSTi to escape the general MIDI sound.

Uploaded a new piece just for fun. It's an "Ocarina Medley for Piano" based upon the ocarina melodies of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I made it for fun, and kinda made up its direction as I went along, but it sounds kinda nice.

New pieces "World of the Fallen" and "Presence of the Fallen"

Both are pieces for an independent horror film being made by NG's own AustinOnline.

"World of the Fallen" may or may not be used in the feature, but "Presence of the Fallen" is a dark ambient piece.

It's just another part of people afraid to be exposed to something new. It's been a normal human reaction throughout musical history. I always remind those people that when they were our age their music was looked at the same way by their elders.

You should also include CDex which can convert WAV>MP3 or MP3>WAV using any bitrate formula. It also allows easy CD-ripping.

This place may seriously limit the type of music that can be added, but that doesn't mean the only genuine music is said porn techno.

What the fuck did that have anything to do with what he said?

I have to agree with him that using other people's music in your own is a simple lack of talent. Sampling DOES have its place, but under very different circumstances.

There's another good program called CDex that 's free. It let's you convert back and forth MP3/Wav and lets you specify the bitrate you want.

Another thing to consider (if you have PC games) is that, in some cases, it extracts music and sounds onto your hard drive. (the chances of that are slimmer with newer games, but it's worth taking the look)

Let me start by saying that it probably has little to do with your mic. I too use a Labtec mic, and my vocals turn out fine. What you need is a good soundcard. If you just bought a new PC, then chances are it's running onboard audio which sucks ass. You need to buy a soundcard and install it (preferably one that supports 16-bit, which I imagine most do) and then make sure that all your audio recordings are 16-bit audio at at least 44.100 khz or, in some cases, 48 khz.

Also how you can condem a subject, that at the age of 18 you probably don't know that much about is beyond me.
Perhaps try being less tempestuous and concentrate your efforts and energy wasted ranting into finding good electronic music that speaks your language, it's out there, no doubt about it.
It's fair enough that you think electronic music is dead to you, but do you really need to start a thread about it. All you have done in my eyes is show your ignorance.

Firstly, I think he was referring more to the electronica that's located in our audio portal. Obviously, professionals in the field don't suffer AS MUCH of the same disease of unoriginality as some things in NG.

Secondly, I can very much agree with most of what he said, and I'm 24 years old with almost 11 years of composing various genres of music under my belt. Personally, I'm very against the use of drum loops. Drum parts are so much more fun to make yourself, and there are some things you can do with them that sound very new.

My opinion on how to do electronica is to have your rhythm, and even if you want it to keep consistent throughout the whole piece, at least change up the instruments to where some drop out or come back in or a change in melody; something to keep the song from getting mundane and drug out.

Check out the trance and dance genre's.
They're stuffed to the rafters.

Its not the genre's fault but the user base.

Theres your explaination.

You know what though? No one ever said they had to like goth music; no one ever said they had to VOTE on goth music. If you're spiel is the extent of the explanation, then tech heads oughtta just stay the hell out of the goth section if it's really not their cup of tea.

This question can be likened to someone thowing a pebble into the ocean and expecting someone to find it. You're too farout vague with this.

Okay. To start, One Winged Angel is a long-ass piece. The length of time it would take to complete a remix depends on how the composer/remixer goes about it. It depends on what he/she wants to do, how they execute it (making the patterns, laying them in Song Mode, setting FX, etc) and so on.

If I had to ballpark it though (with the way I'd do it), I'd say it'd take me 7 hours, but I wouldn't use FL to do it, and I'd reorchestrate the parts as well.

Topic: Recording Drums

Posted: 01/19/07 11:35 PM

Forum: Audio

I've heard that mic-ing drums is the biggest bitch in studio recording. One you get it right, though, you'll also need to set EQs to bring out the right sound you're looking for.

When I do drums (granted that I work in a MIDI environment), I always set the following:

Kick -- set the lo's up at least 2.0, set the 2 mids up close to the center of the graph and notch them up at least 4.0 and close together. This brings out the wet punch sound that goes very well with alternative/metal.
Snare -- set the lo's up at least 1.0, but bring out the mids a tad while keeping the hi's down. This gives the snare more of a beatpunch than a tingy sound. Also, I always set a "room" reverb on the snare alone. It gives the sound more of an 80s feel.

Cymbals and Hats, I just bring up the hi's a little, and I usually set the toms along with the kick.

That's just what I do. I'm not saying it's the magical answer; for all I know, it might be a hell of a lot more difficult with a real drumset, but just some suggestions to throw out there.

If anyone's cheating on their votes, it only proves how insecure and immature they are.

Dude, do you honestly think they'll care? They've already had the balls to go this far.
they will if they think it will effect their sales. And nobody wants to endorse an artist everybody hates. Word of mouth is said to be the world's most effective advertisement, and the worlds most powerful punisher.

The trick to that is to prove to them that he is the original composer, though. I'm not saying there is no solid standing proof, but that will be what you need in order for a case like that to hold up.

It's $20 bucks, a Century Concept Digital. I mostly use it for video games, it's one of those headset mic things
Ah, if you're looking to record vocals for songs you might want to look into getting a better mic. If you have a nice set of stereo headphones you could use them as well. I use a pair of Sony MDR-XD200 headphones when I record vocals and get a decent sound from them.
You kidding me... DON'T DO THAT.

Good speaker ≠ Good microphone.

Buy a usb condenser or something. Its a way better investment, and if you play guitar like you said above, you can mic your amp with it and make your own recordings.

I use a simple LabTech microphone I bought at WalMart for $10 to record my vocals for everything (except the song "Far Away"). I'm convinced that it takes more than a good microphone to get good quality vocals; it also has to do with how you mix/EQ your vocals to set into the music.

I wasn't too fond of Z3TA, but Vanguard is definitely worth the while if you're into making techno. However, if you're using Cubase or any host software like it that supports VSTi's, you could always just use the ReWire function to use FL Studio as a VSTi instead of a standalone.
I don't know about Cubase, but Nuendo picked it up right away.
