Response to: Marvel >< Attack On Titan Posted November 3rd, 2014 in General

My favorite part is that quote from the Marvel VP on Twitter.

"Not a joke, folks. Attack on Titan and the @Marvel universe are crossing over! In 2 weeks. In Japan. Want a teaser?"

He felt that the first thing he had to say was that it was not a joke. Seriously, after his initial tweet about it there was so much bewilderment that he felt the need to confirm that he wasn't punking his followers. If that isn't a ringing endorsement for the idea I don't know what is.

Response to: Protests In Hong Kong: China's Rise Posted November 3rd, 2014 in Politics

I found this article titled Hong Kong's Leader: Universal Suffrage Threatens Business Interests. I mean it is an article from The Diplomat, so you get their own specific bent on the story, but its still funny. Can you imagine what would happen if a politician said something like this in Australia, Canada, the United States or Western Europe?

Does Hong Kong filter out any "unintelligent" people to get that stat? I ask because the statement that citizens of Hong Kong have no business electing their own candidates because ignorant people would ruin the government really riled up the protesters over there.

One of my coworkers also took a university class while in China. The professor told everyone that only educated people should vote because ignorant people voting would lead to social disorder. He was reciting what the government told him to. The coworker states that he can't really fault the professor for teaching what he had to (or God knows what would happen to him), but it was a real eye-opening experience.

I suspect they don't, just because most of the stats that rank Hong Kong high in educational attainment or quality are not done by Hong Kong or China. Even though Hong Kong is a relatively wealthy special administrative region, it really isn't large enough to bribe that many groups that rate educational attainment by country.

You do bring up another good point though. Hong Kong and Finland have very different kinds of governments even though they both hold elections. Finland is a representative democracy and Hong Kong is democracy light? It's really unfair to compare the two in this context, since most of the government in Hong Kong isn't even elected, at least not directly. If 66% of your government is elected by less than 1% of your population, what do you even call that? That is not to even mention that Hong Kong is really part of China, which has its own government and China has to ok the leader of Hong Kong, even if everyone actually does get the vote. It's a mess and woefully uninformed about the situation anyway.

Hate to dig up an old thread like this, but I had to have my say.

I've seen a lot of Webcomic Hosting sites and I have never been particularly impressed. The quality of design on this website is much higher then any of the Webcomic hosting sites I am aware of and we already have a built in userbase that likes webcomics. We already have quite a few top notch people that already upload their webcomics here like WaldFlieger and TheShadling (NSFW). There are also lots of people like TheSwain and Explosm who might upload their webcomics if given sufficient incentive to do so.

Webcomics are relatively light on the servers, since they require limited space to store. Interest in comics are trending up. Even so, webcomic makers find it notoriously hard to make a living, so I'm sure they would appreciate a website that gives them another outlet for their content.

Artists rarely do only one thing and I suspect that there are a lot of Newgrounds creators that also publish a webcomic on the side that we aren't even aware of. As it is, it is not exactly simple to discover those that do upload here. For those that do upload here they are restricted to one upload per day, which really puts a damper on enthusiasm and likely turns quite a few people away.

I think we can do better. I'd like us to do better. For those who would say that this website is a flash site or a movie and game site, would only say that this website has been many things in its time. The users at its inception would barely recognize the website we have today. There have been many changes to it over that time, some quite drastic.

I'm not unaware that there are lots of changes, modifications and update in the pipeline. We also don't have the resources we once did when the website was at is apex, so any new idea will likely take a long time to implement, but that's ok. I'd still like to see it happen, some day. I suspect a lot of other people would like to see it happen too.

You know its funny, but I was actually checking this out yesterday and noticed the same thing. Then again I wasn't even here back in 2002, so its not like it was something I experienced or anything. I think of it as "The Golden Age of Blamming", when you could blam more submissions in one day then you could do in several months now.

I do think the average quality of submissions have increased, but the quantity of submissions have also decreased. We used to have far more users and the average age of each user was much younger, so our proportion of trolls were a whole lot higher. As for what happened to those spammers of old, I imagine some of them went to more fertile pastures (4Chan, Youtube) and the rest just ran out of steam and decided to do something else.

Response to: What brower(s) do you use? Posted November 3rd, 2014 in General

I use Firefox most of the time. Then I use SRWare Iron (based on Chromium) for things that Firefox has trouble with I can't be bothered to fix. Last I use IE, for the things that won't work with either of the above examples. Every so often I switch over from one to another as my main browser when an update screws one of them up and I need immediate functionality.

By the way, lots of nice suggestions and interesting examples. I'll have to try some of them.

Like I keep saying, these people already vote.
but do we really need more of these people voting? I think not.

As far as I know there have been no public, published studies comparing the intelligence of voters vs. non-voters in terms of intelligence anywhere. The closest we have is something like this, which links IQ to wealth. However, there has been heavy criticism of their method and conclusions.

It would follow that the highest IQ countries with elected governments also have the most well run countries, but I would challenge you to reach that conclusion when comparing the top 25 countries by IQ to each other (according to the above study). Finland is on the bottom of this group and Hong Kong is at the top, so let's compare them.

GDP per capita: Hong Kong ($37,955), Finland ($49,055)
Average Life Expectancy: Hong Kong (83.48), Finland (80.63)
Education Ranking Hong Kong (3), Finland (1)

I could go on with other stats where effective governments can effect the outcome, but the result would not be any more clear. Finland and Hong Kong are both nice countries to live in and they both seem to have fairly effective governments.

The only practical way I could think of doing that would be to survey a certain amount of randomly selected voters from whatever country you are surveying and give them all an IQ test, Even that has problems associated with it.

Since people can't point to surveys or graphs, I would imagine that people just make judgments based on their own experiences and biases. If you like what is being done by elected officials right now, you probably believe that voters are a little smarter. If you don't like what is being done by elected officials, you probably think they're a little dumber.

In general, I suspect that the average voter isn't all that different from the average citizen. Even in the US, where voter turnout is unusually low, a fairly large percent of the registered voters turn out anyway, so I imagine their average IQ is fairly close to the national average.

Here are my Top 10 Webcomics (in no particular order):

3.)Powernap
4.)The Meek
5.)Transient
6.)Turtles: Dawn of the Ninja
7.)Derelict
8.)The Dreamer
9.)Battlepug
10.)Romantically Apocalyptic

I read webcomics the way some people read regular comics, but posting them all here would have been a bit overkill. If anyone's looking for a genre specific suggestion though, feel free to ask.

Ebola Cure Delayed by Drug Industry’s Drive for Profit, W.H.O. Leader Says

According to Dr. Margaret Chan, the director General of the WHO, “A profit-driven industry does not invest in products for markets that cannot pay."

Hard to argue with that one, but I imagine the sentiment will fall on deaf ears at the largest Pharmaceutical countries. Here's the whole text of the speech. I suppose the alternative would be to put more money in government R&D targeted toward less profitable diseases but I hardly see much enthusiasm behind that idea.

Response to: Is Attack On Titan Hype Dying? Posted November 3rd, 2014 in General

For sure the hype is dying. It was really hot when they first started releasing the tv series episodes and has settled down ever since. it will probably jump up again once they start releasing the second season. Also there's bound to be some related stuff released in the interim.

If they really time it right they may be able to release season 2 and the live action movie on the same week. That would really bump up interest.

Also, this is a bit of weird, related news.
