Aquamarine

I don't have a reason, I just like the color. It would be shit in underwater combat, but other then that it stands out well enough. Also, who else has an aquamarine lightsaber in the Star Wars universe?

Response to: Cold War was good Posted November 14th, 2014 in General

The Cold War was good for the United States, Russia, and a few other advanced countries that came out of World War II relatively intact. For the rest of the world it was either a minor issue or a major problem.

Warsaw Pact countries had their economies dragged down for decades and frequently the the location of major and minor skirmishes by the Great Powers. Several nations in Asia, Africa, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean became the battleground of hot wars or proxy wars being fought by the Great Powers. The worst examples took decades to recover. Nuclear weapons spread from two nations to at least nine; and those are the ones we know of. Nuclear weapon stockpiles increased exponentially, greatly increasing the deadliness of any potential future nuclear exchange. Tens of millions of innocents died in the aftermath thanks to the ideology of their leaders and the politics of the Cold War. The Great Chinese Famine is just one example. There are many others.

It's also worth noting that many of the countries which are at war or have been at war in the modern era were countries that picked different sides during the cold war. While you could call that incidental, the Great Powers at least had and continue to have an effect in supplying both sides.

The citizens of countries like Bulgaria, Romania, East Germany, Poland, and others were very much harmed by being part of the Warsaw Pact. Marshall plans nations also may have been harmed, since money that could have gone toward rebuilding their nations instead went to setting up defensive perimeters to hem in the Eastern block. The wars in Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Afghanistan, would have been shorter and far less deadly without the addition of modern weapons from the United States and Russia along with their Cold War allies.

Sure we got Space research and certain other advances that were incidental to increased defense spending, but what we mostly got were bigger badder weapons to more effectively kill each other. Now, you could argue that without the Cold War these conflicts, disasters, or something like them would have happened anyway. Some have argued that a Bipolar system actually granted a measure of stability and peace to the world at large. No one knows for sure one way or another, however I find it hard to call all that death and war and conflict a good thing.

Maybe its the best we could do, but calling it good just seems offensive. I think we take for granted that war spurs innovation without taking into account the countries whose infrastructure and economic capacity are destroyed because of it. Also, modern history has been so full of war that it is difficult to pin down a period of relative peace where innovation stalled out. There are also periods of near constant war where innovation and advancements actually went backwards, like during the fall of the Roman Empire. I think this narrative that the Cold War was on balance a good thing, since it let to technological advancements is largely self serving. It ignores the human cost, specifically in countries that only very recently have seen the fruits of these advancements benefit them.

Women's Suffrage Posted November 14th, 2014 in Politics

So, I was reading an article about how Switzerland used to use poor children as cheap labor until fairly recently. It is a fairly disturbing read, especially since it happened in a supposedly advanced nation like Switzerland. However, the thing that struck me even more in the article was the fact that Women did not get the right to vote in Switzerland until 1971. This seemed unusually late, until you check the dates for Women's Suffrage worldwide and realize how late some supposedly advanced nations took to grant women the right to vote.

Here are a two examples:

Switzerland: 1971
Liechtenstein: 1984

For comparison, here four other nations that granted women the right to vote, before those two countries:

Uganda: 1962
Afghanistan: 1963
Sudan: 1964
Yemen: 1970

Not exactly a favorable comparison, is it? None of these countries are thought of as particularly advanced or liberal and yet they beat two of the wealthiest, most technologically advanced nations in the world in this category by years or decades. Am I missing something here? Why did Switzerland and Liechtenstein take so long to grant women the right to vote?

Look up your own country and see how it compares to others.

Yeah, but it's not a sandwich, it's a pretzel. I guess you could compare a Peanut Butter Pretzel to a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich, but then would you buy an $8 peanut butter and jelly sandwich? I get that people do and that the place is popular enough to push up their prices and still get plenty of customers, but I couldn't possibly justify it.

After all, the ingredients are so routine, especially in the United States. It is essentially just wheat and peanut butter. At least the $5 Cronut was relatively unusual and filled or topped with all sorts of unusual flavors. This is just a peanut butter pretzel. They sell them in barrels.

Now, at least if you buy a $80 steak dinner you would get a really high quality steak, plus sides, a salad and maybe even a glass of wine. All the ingredients should be top notch along with the service and you're sitting down. There might even be some nice live music. That seems like a much more worthwhile proposition to me. Hell, a Michelin 3 Star restaurant will set you back several hundred dollars, but you will be trying something that is in all likelihood available nowhere else.

Now this thing has common ingredients and it doesn't even look that special. Plus, you would in all likelihood have to wait on a long line to get one and then have nowhere to sit when you do. There are no doubt thousands of fine pastry shops around New York city where you could get something much more innovative in a much more comfortable environment, so why would I go for this?

The $8 Peanut Butter Pretzel Lobster Tail!

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at this. It's not that it's a bad idea, I'm just a little shocked that people would be willing to spend $8 for it. Would you hand over the $8 to try this fancy peanut butter stuffed pretzel?

You poop, I poop, everybody poops! Some people poop more and others poop less. Poop comes in many colors and textures depending on what you eat and drink and how your health is. Some people enjoy watching other people poop. Some people eat poop. Others spread it over their vegetables as fertilizer. No matter what your relationship is with poop we all have a connection to it. So, how do you poop?

Assuming humanity did not immediately go extinct, which is a real possibility, we would use technology to extract sperm from each male and then freeze it for later use. Pregnancy would be a much less exciting and much more sterile event focused around the continuation of the species. People would likely have much more sex as well, since the threat of pregnancy would be effectively zero. At the same time, STDs would likely spread more rapidly.

There would be a research effort, equivalent to the Manhattan project, to genetically modify human males so that they would be able to constantly produce new sperm or create a way to produce sperm outside the human body.
