Anyways, if a user has gained ranks, put out AFTER the username, not before, makes it a bit cluttered. Also users who have not lost or gained a rank can be left without an X, No need to make the lists take longer between updates. :)

The x is for whether or not they have made all their posts in the current year, but I get your point. No one cares about that specific statistic anyway and one mention of it is probably sufficient. As for the rank gain/loss I think it would line up better if I put +'s and -'s as opposed to just minuses. Excel doesn't like that though, so I'm going to have to put in a custom filter. Then I can put an NA or a 00 for people who did not add or lose a rank along with another divider and that should line up the list fairly well.

You had mentioned before that there was a way to link people to their profiles without including the whole link address. Is that so, or did I just read one of your comments incorrectly?

Only after you have died.

Question: Assume you are working on a group project with four other students as part of the school assessment. If one of the team members is "free-riding", what will you do?

If you have the option, report it to the professor and possibly have them kicked out of your group of have their group grade lowered. If not, just deal with it the best you can by splitting up the work between the remaining four people.

What do you think would be a good name for a planet?

At 11/14/14 05:39 PM, TecNoir wrote: So I turned 16 last summer, and now I'm thinking about getting a job. What percentage of my earnings should go towards a savings?

You should invest as much of it as possible, if you can. The value of Savings is pretty much wiped out every year by inflation, so unless you want to be losing money every year there's not much point in putting anything in Savings. Government bonds are just about the least risky investment you can make and at least you get some interest. A highly rated index fund with a proven long term track record would be a good middle ground. Beyond that there are all sorts of options, from very safe to very risky. Since you're young you might as well go a bit riskier, since you will be able to ride out any downturns in the market.

Someone else would have eventually, since there were many other conquerors and countries interested in placing a stake in the new world, however it would have certainly slowed down Spain's conquest of Mexico. It is also not entirely unlikely that this delay may have meant that France or England was able to carve out a significantly larger portion of Mexico for their own empire than they would have otherwise.

What if the first industrial steam engine had been developed by a Dane instead of an Englishman in 1698?

Maybe, because they want to do some motion capture with the voice actor and want to make sure they at least loosely resemble their character. Maybe they want to actually make sure they are hiring a woman for a female role. I do know, there are any number of reasons. It is generally better to have more information in hiring if you can. Response to: Your thoughts on nuclear power? Posted November 14th, 2014 in General

At 11/14/14 04:54 AM, Cordyceps wrote: It seems that people don't like the idea of nuclear power, despite it being the cleanest power we're capable of.

Do you support nuclear? Would you live next to a power plant? And more importantly, what's your level of education on nuclear physics?

Nuclear power is definitely not the cleanest power we're capable of. Wind and solar power are well developed technologies that create no emissions and very limited pollution attached to disposal of building materials and batteries. There are ample spaces to place wind turbines and solar panels worldwide to supply power to the whole world and then some. Even Japan, which has very limited space, could and does place wind turbines offshore.

Also, Wind and Solar is rapidly becoming cheaper than nuclear power, which is one of the reasons why nuclear power plant construction has declined in recent year. In addition to that it is a mistake to assume that Fukushima was an aberration an that nuclear power plants are generally built on geologically stable areas. There are many nuclear power plants that have been built at or near earthquake faults or that are at risk of tsunami damage worldwide. There are also many older nuclear power plants that are still running today, which were planned to be decommissioned by now when they were built. That is not even mentioning the long term hazard of storing all that nuclear waste, which will last much longer than the supply of uranium and plutonium is likely too.

Right now the problem of power generation is as much a problem of supply as it is of cost. The capacity of firms to be able to build nuclear power plants is much higher than the capacity of create wind turbines or solar panels at this point. For rapidly industrializing countries like China here simply isn't enough capacity available over time to meet their needs. Even though China is one of the greatest producers and suppliers of solar panels and wind turbines in the world, they do not produce enough to meet their power needs. They instead need to make up for the shortfall by building hundreds of coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear plants to make up the difference. There is the conundrum in a nutshell, which all the world is dealing with in one form or another.

Sure, there are other forms of electricity that may make up the difference in the future. Tidal power is promising, although is production capacity is far less than even wind and solar. Ethanol and biofuel holds some promise, but the supply is fairly limited and the CO2 emissions associated and not much better than fossil fuels. Also, burning food stuff for fuel on a hungry planet strikes many people as a bit insane. Hydro power has been effective in many nations, but it has a built in maximum generation capacity worldwide along with the corresponding environmental risks. Geothermal is very efficient, but its potential capacity is concentrated around earthquake faults, which means many nations have little to no possible generation capacity.

Much beyond those possibilities we start getting into the really experimental power station designs, like fusion. In general they have a very large "potential" for covering future power generation, but limited current capacity. Even if we were able to figure out a cost effective way to build these plants tomorrow it will still take decades for them to take a significant chunk out of the world's power generation.

So, what do I think of nuclear power? I don't like it, but right now it is going to have to remain an option for the foreseeable future. However, I have zero confidence that there won't be another accident like Fukushima before we are able to replace those plants with something less dangerous. There is also an excellent chance that if it does happen it will happen in the United States or SouthEast Asia based on total generation and proximity to earthquake faults, which is right in my back yard.
