Response to: Traffic Jams Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

I don't like traffic jams at all. In fact, I will sometimes go to fairly absurd lengths to avoid them. For one, they're a major waste of petrol). Also, the feeling of being stuck in a mob of other people who are also stuck or moving at a very low speed is really infuriating. The concentration of fumes go up and people get agitated. Sometimes they do stupid or crazy things when this occurred. I believe this is called road rage, even though it doesn't only happen in traffic.

So, how do I avoid traffic. Well, I take public transportation when I can and when its cost effective. When this is not an option I walk, take my bike, catch a ride from a friend, or do some combination of all three. If neither of those are options I check out all the traffic maps before I head out and try to plot my way around the major traffic zones. I also have my GPS to alert me of sudden traffic jams that may appear, so I can navigate around them too. Sure, it can involve going down lots of small residential streets at low speeds or even occasionally taking a bit longer to get to my destination then if I just sat in the traffic, but it leaves me in a better state of mind. There's nothing quite so demoralizing as feeling powerless in your life and I try to limit that feeling when I can by taking action.

As for how often I hit traffic jams, a few times a week. They tend to be limited in duration though. If I had to follow the routes that my colleagues do to work every time I'd probably be pissed off a whole lot more than I am.

Response to: Opinions on Eastern medicine? Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

My opinions on Eastern medicine are as follows. It is not as effective as modern medicine (surgery, pharmaceuticals, X-Rays, etc) and would thus not be my first choice in treatment. It is also not regulated in the same way that modern medicine in, so that the amount of active ingredient in any given treatment can vary widely between each shop and practitioner. It is also, on balance, not nearly as effective.

Eastern medicine can vary from deadly to beneficial with the largest group of treatments being by far inconclusive in effect. That applies to both things imbibed and physical treatments like acupuncture. If applied judiciously and with care it may have a mild positive effect on your overall health, though that may have more to do with the placebo effect than the actual efficacy of treatment.

That applies to the vitamin and supplement industry as well as many other alternative medical care. On balance only a very tiny percentage of overall treatments have any positive effect and you have to be a real expert at figuring out what those actually are. I'm not sure that its worth the risk, to be honest.

That's not to say that modern medicine is perfect either. It depends on the knowledge, honesty, and skill of the practitioner as well as the knowledge, honesty and skill of the companies involved. There are plenty of doctors that have hurt people. There are plenty of pharmaceutical companies that have hurt people too, but selling medicines that were either not effective or actually hurt some people. The same applies to medical equipment manufacturers and everyone in between. Of course, unlike in alternative medicines there are usually legal recourse for these abuses and thus the risks of doing harm are higher as well as the incentives of doing good.

The wrinkle of course is that it is still possible in many instances, especially in for profit medical systems (like the USA), for doing the wrong thing to be more profitable than doing the right thing. Doctors, nurses, and the members of the industries that serve their needs are not all saints. Some of them are actually quite the opposite and if you give them sufficient incentives to do the wrong thing to people they will.

Doctors and nurses will sometimes perform costly and unnecessary procedures and tests for a good payout. Pharmaceutical companies will significantly mark up costs or release a new medication that either doesn't work or doesn't work well for a nice payout. Equipment and supplies manufacturers will release faulty parts and supplies if there is profit in skimping on one portion or another for a bit of extra profit. Insurance companies will try will not allow sick people to enroll in their programs to save money. These are just a few of the things that happen and they happen more often if the incentives for doing so are greater than the costs.

Of course all these things apply equally well to alternative medicine with one one glaring exception. There is no legal recourse if what you take or have done to you hurts you. Thus the incentives are not in your favor, so handle with care.

Response to: Michael Phelps Arrested For Dui Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

Well, luckily he didn't hurt anybody, but himself. It was stupid and reckless and he shouldn't have done it, but oh well. More than a million people get arrested for DUI in the USA each year and it has consequences. He's feeling those now and whether he let people down not is besides the point. Who know, maybe he has a drinking problem too. There are 18 million alcoholics in the US as well. The best that he could do is take this as a lesson, learn from it, and not do it again just not anyone else.

Of course the bigger issue, the one people are really wondering about, is if this will affect his chances of competing in the 2016 Olympics. The answer to that is a definitive maybe.

I have a fairly varied retinue of friends as far as their ages go. Does my frame of reference vary from theirs? Sure, but I keep that in mind when interacting with them. I don't get all nostalgic about the 90's with my younger friends, because that's not their frame of reference. I don't get overly technical about the newest social networking or the hippest new music or clothing, since that's not their frame of reference either. I try to meet people where they are and enjoy what I can with them. No reason to make people feel insecure about their ages if there's no great profit to be had in it. I don't want to purposely alienate people I like to spend time with.

I guess this means I act slightly differently depending on who I happen to spending time with, but oh well. Such is life. It's not like I do anything broadly different in the rest of my life either. Also, having friends that are different ages and adapting to that difference is really not all that different to having friends that different cultures, different sexual orientations, different philosophies, different lifestyles, or who come from different nations. You adapt to the situation and if it's enjoyable or very necessary you adapt quicker.

Response to: East and West needs reconciliation! Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

While there is plenty of productive cultural mixing between Eastern and Western cultures, along with many other cultures as well, I don't think it would be preferable for them to become one mishmash culture. There are certain things there are beautiful and unique about the cultures of each region and cultural mixing tends to lead to the dissolution of the some of those things.

Very limited, specific practices done by small committed groups of people tend to not last too long in large, multicultural states. The dominant culture tends to have a greater impact on what practices are kept and what practices are discarded. This can lead to the extinction of languages, styles of dress, cuisine, areas of study, music, art, and a whole host of other things.

Also, dominant cultures tend not to be very respectful of the artifacts of cultures that die out. Just think of all the looting that goes on today and in the past in countries like Egypt, Iraq, Mexico, India, and China where modern civilizations replaced more ancient ones.

Knowledge also gets lost. Just think of all the knowledge that was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire, even though it was a huge and continent spanning entity. It took millenia until most of its knowledge was retrieved and we are still finding pieces of it today.

Diverse cultures also connect people more closely together. Some of the closest, most community minded countries in the world also happen to be where culture has developed for thousands of years. Shared history, religion, and other practices bind people together and makes them more resilient in a way that large multicultural societies do not. That's not to say that there is no place for them. Countries like the United States are exceptional in many way that more homogeneous countries cannot match, but there are trade-offs as well. On balance, large sprawling cultures that integrate many peoples into one dominant culture tend to be a bit more disconnected from their fellow citizens.

So yeah, I think that both cultures have a lot to learn from each other and should, however if that leads to loss of what what makes cultures on both sides unique and special in a way that adds to the beauty and diversity of this world than I was say it is not a good trade-off. However, in all likelihood it is going to happen anyway, whether I think its a good thing or not. We live in an increasingly connected world and one of the effects of that is that our cultures continue to converge in small and large ways.

Also, Windows XP is still an option for some new release games.

If it allowed me to play every 99.9% of the games I wanted to play and use office and a few other programs, sure. Otherwise I'll stick with Windows 7 and use an emulator when I need to play really old games that I can't easily run. Whichever option is best for my purposes is the option I will take. Of course MS-DOS can't do that, so I'm usually stuck with whatever happens to be the most used distribution at the current time.

Response to: Windows 10 announced Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

Am I excited? Not really, I just view Windows as a blank slates to put my games and the other programs that either won't run or won't run will on Linux or OSX, although to be honest I don't use OSX as much as I meant to. Yes, it is possible to triple partition a computer with all 3 OS's. Apple doesn't like it, but really what are they going to do about it anyway? Sue me for buying their software, but not their hardware?

So, I prefer my OS's as simple and clean as possible. The first few days of an install I pretty much spend taking stuff off. That way I can carve out extra space for the programs I actually want there. Every new release of Windows they add new stuff I don't want or need and I have to take it off. I also need to spend a little time learning where all that stuff is and how to take it out without causing any issues or errors later on. It is a mild annoyance, but I guess it keeps my brain sharper so I can hardly complain.

Would I prefer to just continually update a single OS indefinitely? Sure, but hardware and software requirements advance and and I have advance with them, even if its kicking and screaming. At least the positive thing about Windows is that it still runs almost all the PC games out there. If that ever changes or if some other OS takes its place in that leading role I may switch to that. Also every other release tends to be the better release, so Windows 10 should at least be the better release.

TL;DR: I really don't give it a shit about OS's. I just view them as a means to an end. Once I get them installed I can change them to my liking. I am neither excited, nor cynical about Windows 10.

At 10/2/14 07:49 AM, Toastie wrote: And i thought paying for and downloading porn was just a myth.

No, in fact whether you pay for it or stream it you're likely paying for it in anyway in terms of adds, tracking cookies, and other pieces of software you accumulate on those sites. Of course, if you use adblock and other addons you hopefully don't get any of those. However, you're still using a small amount of electricity and the wear and tear on your computer or other device. Then again you could access it on a public computer with free wifi at which point you're still paying for the porn with your time, which worth something too.

So, if you really want to split hairs...and apparently I do...free porn doesn't actually exist unless you break the laws of physics somehow and don't actually spend any time viewing it, while still actually getting enjoyment out of it. I suppose instantly downloading it into your brain might do that, but then we get back to the whole wasting energy conundrum.

Response to: Favorite TV Tropes? Posted October 30th, 2014 in General

I really like the affably evil trope. It's a real departure from some of the one dimensional villains that you find in so many shows. I prefer complexity in my television characters and the affably evil trope adds something to those characters. If done correctly the viewer will have to constantly reevaluate whether they characters he or she is rooting for are really who they think they are.

Some of the other tropes associated with this one, like Antivillain or Antihero also add moral complexity to the story. I'm not saying I enjoy television where all the characters are amoral, far from it. I just like variety. It gives the shows more depth and in many ways mirror the way people actually act in real life. Unfortunately flawed and complex characters are not often very financially lucrative, at least the way I like them.

I really liked Sterling Hayden's portrayal of Brigadier General Jack D Ripper in Dr. Strangelove.

Charlie Chaplin's portrayal of a Jewish barber in The Great Dictator was pretty good too, if only for that speech at the end.

Jose Ferrer as Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac was probably the best portrayal of the character in film.

Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia was pretty good too.
