Also, quick grammer question, is it -'blah.'- or -'blah'.-

In the U.S., we put quotation marks after punctuation. British English, I believe, does the opposite.

Going back to your original question, I hate British users because they suck at punctuation.

I wrote and illustrated a short story in middle school that involved a sad and lonely man obsessed with watching television. Don't remember much else about it other than the fact that he dies at the end by choking on a chicken bone. My teacher found it disturbing so she called my parents.

I still think it's one my more literary works.

What do you mean by "a state of their own"?

A state recognized as independent from Israel.

What if we call the Hamas-run government in the Gaza Strip a 'state' from now on? What if we call the the Fatah-run PA in the A and B areas of the West Bank a 'state'? What would that change, apart from making the diplomacy around Israeli retaliations for Palestinian militant strikes more muddy?

I never once defined a solution as such, nor did I imply that the process would be so straight forward or clean cut.

I couldn't agree more! It's why I've been emphasizing that, although I do consider socialism a viable option as a next step, I tend to distance myself from the (grossly misunderstood) textbook-definition of socialism. Because we all need to see society as an organic structure, not some contrived mechanism that will do right by everyone. The 'perfect' societal structure, in my opinion, is going to be some sort of blend of socialism and capitalism. I truly believe that this is inevitable, and if you disagree then you should do some research on socialism and then take a look around you. (Sidenote: by 'you' I mean anyone. Not you personally)

We live in a society where people can own their own helicopters and private islands, and yet walk the down same streets that others are sleeping on. While I do believe that our population needs to be kept in check (that's another discussion), I would nevertheless argue that there's enough for everyone. This is the greatest gift of capitalism - unprecedented growth and technological advancement driven by competition. Unfortunately, this growth will not last forever (just look around you), and eventually we will need to take a step in the right direction and see to it that everyone is living by a decent standard.

Yes, I am ultimately talking about the redistribution of wealth. I'm not a moron -- I understand that many people are against this, and I also understand why. But the fact remains that, given our vast amount of resources, the rich are far too rich and the poor are far too poor. Something needs to be done, likely in the form of revolution (violent or not). In my opinion, it won't happen within any of our lifetimes, but it still seems practically inevitable.

This line of thinking is disgusting. You're the only barbarian in this situation.

Judging by your posts, you seem to know very little about the matter at hand. This isn't too surprising, though - based on your tenuous grasp on the English language, I assume you're not a day over thirteen.

you don't see israel using rocket sites at hospitals and schools lobbing missiles into palestine.

Yeah we do. Israel is notorious for indiscriminate counter attacks, where they target areas largely populated by civilians for the sake of taking out a single individual. It's, to borrow your terminology, absolutely barbaric. Also, as AJ mentioned, Israel uses chemical weapons on Palestinian civilians on a daily basis.

It's a shame. I was sincerely hoping that a few people would step up and claim that, although they largely support Israel, they also believe that Palestine deserves a state of their own.

Israelis for a Palestinian State? Posted January 7th, 2014 in Politics

Is there such a thing?

It seems that everyone I talk to that supports Israel is completely against giving the Palestinian people a state of their own. This observation might not be worth anything, considering I live in the American east coast, but I'm still curious as to whether there is anyone here who supports this idea. I've always been pretty against the Israeli occupation, but I think the bottom line is that both Israel and Palestine should be able to have their own states. This should be everybody's goal. Even the Pope thinks so.

What are your thoughts? Why or why not?

Enough said.

I was being hyperbolic, Camarohusky, but I think leanlifter1 made some decent (albeit convoluted) points worth considering. The phrase comes from a song lyric. Obviously most of what happens on the higher end of capitalism isn't actually crime; it's legal and supported by the capitalist structure itself. Nonetheless, I believe that capitalism is inherently ridden with immoral activities and corrupt participants, which are, in my opinion, real crimes.

At 1/6/14 04:53 PM, orangebomb wrote: It ended pretty badly. While they did grow rapidly under communism, it wasn't a true communist system by any definition and if anything, made the proletariat far worse than you would think about any capitalist society.

Alright, so we disagree on two things: the first is the idea that 'communism' will never work, and the second is that capitalism will never cease to exist.

Let me first say I'm not a communist. Never said I was - the thing is, if you ever express any sort of interest in the highly stigmatized Marx, you are guaranteeing yourself a nice slice of alienation. So let me clarify that I do not believe Marx was 100% accurate in everything he said (he wasn't, at all). Nevertheless, dialectic materialism (basically the idea of looking at the world vis-a-vis societal and change) remains to be a philosophy worth keeping alive. That's why I profess to having a bit of Marxist way of looking at things. Capitalism is a good thing - I never denied this. It is still, essentially, organized crime, but it is nevertheless a major part of history that inevitably needed to happen. Marx knew that. Lenin and everyone else didn't. That's why "communism" was rushed and entirely unsuccessful - it is also, unfortunately, one of the reasons why it has earned such a terrible reputation. You seem to be turning a blind eye to my admitting this, which is silly.

Communism will never work due to human greed and more importantly, there in no incentive to succeed or advance in life, more or less, the government will try to control every aspect of your life, and screw you over the first chance they can get.

You don't know what communism is. There is no state, no class, no form of currency within a communist world. Do some research and come back to me.

Are you that ignorant, or simply that retarded? Communism as a system will never work,

I know that true Marxian communism will never be achieved. I never claimed the opposite. However, you're not understanding why it won't work because you don't even know what it actually is. Seriously, please go read something.

Let me be perfectly clear, capitalism as a system will never die as long as society as is exists. Supply and demand will be the driving force for those who are willing to take it, and I'd rather live in that world than any Communist society where human achievement is stymied for a false sense of equality.

I have no way to prove to you that capitalism will eventually die. You also have no way to prove to me that it will live forever. However, by looking at what evidence is available (i.e. the current state of capitalist societies) we can draw some loose conclusions. For some reason, you seem to think that everything is just fine and dandy, that America (the best example of capitalism) is entirely stable. I disagree. Once again, I encourage you to do some research, particularly into the past. Look at how history has progressed, and how societies have consistently been changing since their inceptions.

You are really blind, Communist societies in this world are either in name only, are huge shitholes, or are defunct. Society has long progressed from communism, and capitalism emerged as the winner for good reason.

See above. You don't know what communism is - you're literally using a word you don't know the meaning of. You're going in circles and it's making me dizzy.

Ignorance is no excuse for lying, especially when history has proven you wrong.

Couldn't agree more. Go read a history book.

Response to: Capitalism is evil Posted January 6th, 2014 in Politics

"Capitalism is indeed organized crime, and we are all the victims."

Couldn't agree more. But here's the thing: there's not a whole lot we can do about it. Marx believed that the proletariat would eventually gain enough sense to see they're getting screwed and mistreated, therefore bringing about some sort of cultural and societal revolution that would bring about the end of capitalism and the founding of socialist states. Lenin believed that the proletariat needed a push in that direction, a leader of some sort. We all know how well that ended.

My opinion lies between Marx and Lenin. It will come naturally, but the process will not be as organic as Marx hypothesized. Nevertheless, I do believe that capitalism will eventually die. Not with our lifetimes, but soon enough.

If you disagree with this, then you should take a look back at history and the ways in which societies progress.

Cheers.

Also question to Christians, do you refer to the tree of genesis as the tree of forbidden fruit? or is it at least obvious that I'm talking about the tree of genesis? (Not Christian, so it's a bit difficult for me to determine.)

If you say, "forbidden tree," or something to that degree, then almost everyone will know what you're talking about, Christian or not.

In my opinion, I'd try to eliminate the word ambition from the poem itself. It is slightly redundant. Look up some synonyms, or find another way to implicate the meaning of ambition. Alternatively, you could just leave the poem untitled -- it's a short piece with a pretty clear message, so it's not like many potential readers will think, "Jeez, I sure wish this poem had a title!"

Or maybe I'm wrong. Either way, good work.

Hello fellow writers!

So some of my poetry was recently accepted by an online literary and arts magazine called BRICKrhetoric. The submission process was incredibly simple, and I was pretty surprised when my work was accepted for their latest issue.

I wanted to share this website with you guys because I think it's a great place for aspiring young writers to get some of their work out there. I am not affiliated with BRICKrhetoric by any means other than the fact they've published some of my poetry. They accept various forms of art and are not limited to poetry. So if you're looking to get some of your work out there, give them a chance! They are always accepting submissions.

Good luck with all your future writing and art related endeavors!

Yes! This has happened to me a few times.

I used to be really good at remembering my dreams. When I was in high school, I experimented with lucid dreaming. I would set an alarm to wake me up in the middle of the night; I'd make myself stay awake for about twenty minutes before falling back asleep. Somehow, this encouraged lucid dreams and also helped me to remember my dreams - lucid or not.

But now I hardly remember my dreams. It's really annoying, because I still have relatively vivid dreams practically every night. I'm usually thinking about writing before I go to bed, which I feel like is partially why my dreams occasionally involve writing.

Bah.

Some basic advice would be to use smaller paragraphs. Breaking up the action will help the reader follow the story and to stay entertained. The problem with the entertainment part is that your story currently doesn't have very much going on. If you want sense the fear that the narrator feels when it encounters the creature, then you should not introduce it so immediately. Also, the tense of your story is rather annoying.

Keep practicing. Look for some help online in regards to creative writing. If you're still in school, go to your English teacher for some advice.

There are plenty of written accounts of people being burned alive during the holocaust, especially within the confines of Auschwitz. While crematoriums were primarily used for corpses, there were nevertheless circumstances of living people being put to death by means of fire. Killings were not always systematic; officers had plenty of creative power when it came to putting prisoners to death. To think that no prisoners would be killed in this way seems naive.

One particular passage I read while in a class I took on wartime memoirs talked about Josef Mengele. He was some sort of doctor that would run crazy experiments of prisoners... apparently he sent a lot of people to be burned alive.
