Just kidding. I know none of you have ever kissed anyone before.

But how would you do it? A friend of mine is indirectly seeking advice, and I don't know what to tell him. I've always gotten lucky; the few girls that were into me were pretty easy to initiate physical contact with. My friend seems to have a different scenario though, so I figured I'd ask you guys for advice and then tell him not to do the things that you guys say.

So? What's the best and worst ways to initiate that first kiss, that first intimate moment?

Technical is Andy James, Tosin Abasi, etc.

I agree that both of those guys are great guitarists, but if you're under the impression that Govan is a generic rock guitarist, then you haven't listened to any of his music.

Listen to those guys, if you can't tell the difference, your ears might be broken.

I do listen to both. I met James at NAMM in a guitar clinic. He mentioned Govan's name several times when discussing overlaying scales.

Yeah so I just did, but those guys you mentioned are also way better than Govan, and very technical.

I'm positive that none of the guitarists we've been discussing would call themselves better than one another. In fact, they more likely draw inspiration from each other (see my above comment on James talking about Govan). You seem to be new to playing guitar. You remind me of myself when I was sixteen and thought it was all about being faster than the other guy, knowing the most scales, etc. Govan could play Abasi's licks, and the reverse is true as well. You don't seem to understand the point of composing music.

So you have listened to Abasi, but you mentioned this guy?

It was an arbitrary decision, really. I've been listening to a lot of The Aristocrats lately, so I guess I just went with Govan. Again, I'm not going to argue who is more or less technical because I know that's not what matters. Not sure why you seem unable to find a middle ground here.

Why does that matter? You have one song on your page and it's a basic jazz song, nothing technical.

I asked out of curiosity, not to be condescending. I'm assuming you're new to playing considering the fact that you're unable to see the technicality behind Govan's playing.

I recorded that song after my first guitar lesson. I'd only been playing a week.

Not trying to start some argument here. I'm just absolutely blown away by the fact that somebody who is supposedly a guitarist calling Guthrie Govan a typical rock guitarist, or whatever it was you said.

Peace dawg.

I'm assuming you're trolling, but I'm drunk enough to play along.

Define "technical." Then tell me how his playing doesn't fit that definition.

Also, care to name some "better guitarists?" If you say Steve Vai, Petrucci, or Malmsteen, I will quite possibly throw up. Anyways, I never said he's the best. I called him a good choice. If you think there is somehow a "best" guitarist out there, then you're the one who doesn't what they're talking about my friend. Some other good choices would be Holdsworth, Metheny, Abasi... I don't know, the list goes on. Again, there is no "best" guitarist.

How long have you been playing guitar? Not trying to sound like a dick because for all I know it's longer than I've been playing... just curious.

hippy, guitar music is hardly amazing

You must know very little about music if you call this "hippy, guitar music." I didn't post a video of Jerry Garcia climbing around the same few modes for twenty minutes. Go listen to some jazz and familiarize yourself with music theory. Your ascap membership is worthless if you never keep an open mind for new music and shoot down others' tastes in genres without even understanding them in the first place.

It's understandable to not like something, but you've got a long way to go when it comes to developing your musicianship if you're so quickly writing off everything that doesn't sound like what you already listen to...

For real though, go check out Flying Lotus' latest album. If you're unable to enjoy that, then you're a lost cause.
flying lotus is dope, but this shit isn't

I met Flying Lotus when he came to my university for a spontaneous gig. We talked about jazz, philosophy, the link between the two, and how one of his biggest goals is incorporating fusion into his music. That was before You're Dead! dropped, an album that certainly achieved that fusion. He mentioned plenty of musicians who've inspired him, and I'm sure I don't even need to mention who one of them was...

But yeah, I'm not trying to cram some new genre down you're throat. Just letting you know that you're closed minded, and that's not going to get you anywhere in music. So chillax, broski.

He's either boring because you're not a musician or don't understand music in general. Not trying to be a dick. It's like I said, Govan's music is not likely to be appreciated by non-musicians or by people who don't have an understanding of music theory. I realize how pretentious that sounds, but whatever.

He's like the LeBron James of guitar. You might not be a fan, but if you're unable to recognize his talent then you don't understand basketball.

If you're a guitarist, then you'll already know that a very good answer to this question is Guthrie Govan.

If you're a guitarist and don't know who he is, then you probably really fucking suck at guitar, so fix that and look him up. If you aren't a guitarist, then you should still give him a listen. You might not find him enjoyable though... he's like a "guitarist's guitarist," whatever that means.

At 12/10/14 04:49 PM, TomFulp wrote: Good read.

Thanks! This made my day! (Assuming you're not being sarcastic).

That's what the stranger told me.

I was in a public bathroom, washing my hands. I figured he was joking around or trying to be a dick, and so I thought nothing of it. I shot him a quick glance, went to dry my hands, and left the bathroom.

That was a mistake.

It wasn't until later that day, after I'd gotten home, that I began to smell something awful. I checked by shoes, my armpits, even the corner between my desk and wall that's filled with a bunch of trash ranging from discarded term papers to candy wrappers... but I found nothing. I couldn't locate the source of that terrible smell.

It was like an onion mixed with a stale fart. A strong stench with subtle undertones.

It didn't even stop the next day. Not even a shower and a fresh set of clothes had ended that terrible smell and its olfactory onslaught.

I grew frightened, but I remained curious. Had that stranger in the bathroom done something to me?

I began noticing patterns. Certain times of day, certain places, a change in the wind's direction... the smell would either augment or diminish in intensity. I was constantly sniffing, looking, feeling, searching for the source of this unpleasantness.

Then I found my first clue -- a small, brown smudge on the bottom of my front door. It had dried over night, but its scent was unmistakably familiar. But, surely this wasn't the cause - my door doesn't follow me to work, to school, to my friends' houses. I knew that there must've been more.

Later, I was driving to get some food, and I realized I'd forgotten to bring change for the parking meter. I reached downward, stroking the gray floor mat with my fingertips, looking for loose change. I found a single penny, a paper clip, and a Bob Marley cassette tape. But there was something else down there. Something I wasn't able to pick up.

A small patch of the floor was crusty, as if a recent spill had only just then begun to solidify. I twirled my fingers about the rough, dried patch of fuzz, brought my hand toward my nose, and sniffed.

The smell was too powerful. I pulled over immediately and barfed onto a sidewalk. A woman walking her dog laughed at me, totally unaware of the horrible presence haunting my life.

With my appetite gone, I drove back home.

That was two days ago. I've cleaned both the stain on my door and the patch in my floor mat.

But the smell... It still haunts me. I still feel its presence. Sometimes inside, sometimes outside.

I did my laundry. There was another stain on the pants I'd been wearing that day I received the warning from the stranger in the bathroom. God, why hadn't I listened? Why didn't I look down, see the demon sticking to my leg, and end its life right then and there? Now I'm doomed. For that demon has spread itself all throughout my world, and I fear that I will not be able to escape it.

And now I sit here, waiting. Will there be more smudges, more stains? Some tiny turdlets, perhaps? Waiting around like long-forgotten landmines from a past war?

I don't know for sure, and I honestly don't want to find out.
