So, what do you call it when they don't give the representatives money and influence them with other means like, I don't know, say... voting influence?

Bribery is the giving or offering of a bribe, which is to persuade by any sort of inducement. It doesn't necessarily revolve around money.

what happens after marijuana is decriminalized? what happens to the party? what happens to those people who obtained power under the party's wing? do you think they'll just up and say "oh, well, world fixed time to go home"?

This isn't a very good argument, mal. Name a party that wasn't initially established around a couple specific issues. What would happen? The party would broaden its focus. Look at the Green party. Initially centered around the environment, today featuring a complete leftist platform.

Spinning Iraq - (lack of) results Posted July 31st, 2007 in Politics

"Last year, on April 5, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 1815, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006, and George W. Bush signed it into law. It contained a provision, in Section 1059, authorizing special immigrant status for a maximum of 50 Iraqi translators per year."

And how many translators have received amnesty and been allowed into the US? 0. I know this because I worked with the women who wrote this story, and who filed the very first paperwork for the translator in this article. This is the story you won't find in the mass media. The U.S. government and its military, after the grand announcement, has dragged its feet and stonewalled every step of the way.

Among some of the more flagrant attempts at making HR1815 irrelevant:
* Sending mail to Andy in Iraq (where there is no mail service), instead of to the person filling the paperwork on his behalf.
* Requiring his signature in the presence of a notary public - an American institution nonexistent in Iraq.
* Requiring an embossed version of the seal Andy finally procured.
* Insisting on a letter from a general, despite the fact that no general ever worked on the ground with these units, and that all four of Andy's commanding officers had already submitting glowing letters of recommendation.

In fact, no general in the US army is able to write such a letter, none working closely enough with Iraqi translators on the ground. It took a special request from a lower-ranking officer to finally obtain a letter. Andy was finally approved - for consideration, which he was ultimately denied.

Read the article for the full story - for the typical ass-fuckery that goes on day in and day out. To do something go to Education for Peace in Iraq Center.

How can anyone make an informed judgement with such inempt media outlets?

By the time they're finished there isn't going to be a hell of a lot left.
But at least we can't be held responsible.

No offence, but short-sighted half-baked ignorant comments like this irritate the piss out of me. Sure, 99% of the problems in Africa can probably be traced back to colonialism. But saying we should just "let them sort it out" is hardly an ethical move.

Look at your post. You claim all of their problems are our fault, and then claim that ignoring it now will absolve ourselves? How? That's an irresponsible, lazy position to take if you seriously think this is a result of colonialism.

What we need is aid that isn't politically motivated. That isn't tied to favors or buying our products. Aid that's actually meant to help the situation. I've always said that the best way to solve the problem would be to boost the African Union and make it a more effective force. There are already AU troops in Sudan. They're helpful but woefully undermanned at this point. Promoting the AU is promoting a regional coalition that can benefit the entire continent. For the problems right now as well as long-term.

We help immediately, it doesn't come off as an occupation, no Americans are killed, and African countries end up being able to help themselves long-term.

Response to: Should we bring our troops home? Posted July 29th, 2007 in Politics

The entire reason the country is in chaos is because of the US invasion and occupation. It seems obvious that the first step to correcting the problem is removing the cause. Removing US troops and replacing with some sort of coalition of regional troops seems like a place to start.

Response to: Nato: Why Are We Still Members? Posted July 29th, 2007 in Politics

Eastern European countries are still clamoring to join NATO. Why? It's politically expedient to cosy up to the US. NATO has grown to become less "north america" and more simply an American-led military coalition. Being a member means closer ties to the US. I didn't check the OT's home country, and don't remember it, but I bet cutting NATO ties would just cause undue friction.

And what strain does membership entail, really? It's almost more of a "knowing your place" than actually doing anything, negative or positive.

Assuming you meant "what's up man" as in what's been going on.. Graduated, getting paid a little to write, racing the car every weekend, living with the 'rents again, building a barn, and picked up a pup.

AFAIK, basset hound + border collie mix, with maybe a little springer spaniel thrown in. He's amazingly well-behaved, except for a few manic episodes a day where he'll get real teethy, nippy, super hyper, growly. The neurotic collie in him me-thinks, but will prolly grow out of it.

Proteas, you said you had pitbulls, didn't you? We grew really attached to this one pit mix at the Ithaca SPCA, very handsome. But way too much energy and work needed to make him a good dog.

(These new pic limitations are crazy large.)

I didn't know people ever actually bought photoshop. But my new camera came with some amazing software that works wonders, as long as I shoot in .RAW format. Can change white balance, color adjustment, all without degrading the image at all. Of course this is totally irrelevant to photo restoration...

meh.

Yes, I'm going to stop if you start entering the crosswalk. No, if you stand at the corner and stare at me dumbly, I'll keep driving. And if you start walking and then stop in the middle of the street? I will make a concerted effort to hit you.

Firefox is for the poor souls who don't have the option of using Safari. If you did, you'd see that it tends to be faster than Firefox and uses less resources, while also matching your operating system perfectly.

Still, I commend ya guys for trying. ;-)

I have a problem with mandatory sentencing or "three strikes" laws or anything that supersedes the ability of judge and jury to determine things on a case by case basis taking everything into consideration. That said, of course previous offenses and things of that nature ought to be taken into account.

I don't really know what the guy in this case ought to have received. Drunk driving cases are particularly lousy because they're never premeditated, nobody sets out to hit someone while intoxicated. *shrug*
