The Us Prison Population!!!1Eleven1 Posted July 26th, 2004 in Politics

America's prison population has hit an all-time high. Combine it with those on probation or parole, and we're talking large numbers. Check teh script:

"The US has nearly 6.9 million people - roughly 3.2% of the adult population - in prison or on probation or parole, a Justice Department report reveals.

More than 130,000 people were processed by the criminal justice system last year, according to the report.

Experts say the rise in numbers is the result of tough laws passed in the 1990s, which have led to more people being sent to prison - and for longer.

Texas and California have the most people on probation or parole.
...
Of those discharged from parole in 2003, 38% ended up back in prison because they had committed fresh crimes or technical violations."

What is the solution? How large of a problem is it? Are harsh penalties really a good thing? What about our atrocious recidivism(sp) rates? The "war on drugs"? Necesary, or additional burden?

But they never go anywhere. The Israel thread I have - it's pointless. I don't know what the hell is going on in it, I stopped looking. Most of my threads never get anywhere. The ones that do, spin horribly out of control into idiocy.

I don't know what the fuck to do. I try making different threads. I don't know the problem. Perhaps my threads just suck ass. Perhaps no one else finds them worthy of posting. Perhaps everyone wants to talk about..

Yeah. Perhaps everyone wants to blow off about that. In. half. a. dozen. different. threads.

You can't really control a thread once you start it. You make something containing the word "Iraq", you know where it will head, regardless of your original intentions.

My most-replied-to topic, AFAIK, wanted to look at the implications next November, of Bush's gay marriage amendment. What happened? It became the usual bullshit ring-around-the-rosy conv. about gay marriage. People can't seem to grasp finer issues. It's always overwhelming topics. Black and white... good & bad. bleh.

If it doesn't existance, then we have to settle with biased determinations of bias. I'm pointing this out. This is how it is.

Response to: Left Wing Biased Posted July 26th, 2004 in Politics

All of this "charting of bias" and crap is really dumb. You guys make me depressed.

A network's bias is intangible - it constantly changes, and you can't categorize it, or immediately compare it with another. I mean, you can't, without looking like an ass. While CNN might have a bias towards one area, Fox might have a different sort of bias in another area of the news.

Politics isn't a linear spectrum, neither is bias. You're generalizing everything to the point of meaningless.

Of course all news sources are biased. But you know what? You go to Fox, CNN, BBC, or Al-Jazeera, and they all get the majority of their news from AP, or Reuters.

Sure, they have their own specials occasionally, but these are usually classified as editorials. Hannity, O'Reilly, Franken - they aren't news reporters. They're talking heads. "Bias" isn't applicable - they're giving their opinions, calling opinions "bias" just makes you look like a fool.

Additionally, bias is in the eye of the beholder. I might say CNN has a right-wing bias. A European would tend to agree with me. A FNC viewer, would strongly disagree. It's a subjective term.

2004 Homeless World Cup Posted July 26th, 2004 in Politics

mighty_potato alerted me to this in his general topic, I wanted to see the responses here.

Homeless football [*cough* soccer] cup under way
"The second football World Cup for the homeless has kicked off in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.

More than 200 homeless players representing 28 countries from four continents are taking part.

The tournament is designed both to highlight the problem of homelessness and to help those involved overcome their problems.

The event is organised by a worldwide network of street papers and supported by sporting goods manufacturers.
...
Last year's event was won by the host country, Austria.

Organisers say it was a big success, with 31 of the 141 players now holding regular jobs and 12 signed as football players or coaches.

Forty-nine players are said to have changed their lives around by taking courses, overcoming addictions or finding a home.
...
Among this year's 28 participating countries are Argentina, Brazil, Britain, France, Japan, Kenya, Namibia, Poland, Russia, South Africa and the US.

So, it's therapeutic for the players and raises awareness of homeless-related issues. What are people's thoughts of this cup? Does it do any good? Solve anything? Any redeemable value? Totally worthless? Pointless? Funneh?

It's not necesarily unnatural to build houses and change our habitat - every creature has done such. We're just doing it on a grossly larger scale.

Libertarians make me laugh.

If you want a libertarian goverment, move to Iraq.

Stop Suckling On Cows' Teets Posted July 26th, 2004 in Politics

You sick fucks.

It's unnatural and unhealthy. You wonder why obesity is such a problem in the US? Perhaps it's because we're drinking cow milk, which was made for beasts much larger than ourselves. The nutrional requirements are completely different.

Lactose intolerance is a completely natural affair - indeed, some studies suggest that most adults are intolerant to some percentage. They don't realize that their stomach aches, etc., are coming from their immoral milk habit, however.

Every beast stops drinking milk at some point in their life. Humans are the only ones to keep drinking it throughout their lives. And we aren't even drinking human milk! Cow, goat. These beasts aren't similar at all to humans.

There is no justifiable reason to drink milk after you've matured from a small infant. You can easilly get the nutrition from other, more natural & healthy sources.
