the students need to be willing to join the clubs. and many only care about leaving class and getting drugs or getting laid.

Which is why we would have to create clubs that they would be willing to join.

Make classes exciting, as well as push the students, but do not have unnecesary tests at the end of the year "achievement" tests.
those tests are not for the students but for the school. it is nessesary to see how much they have learned so that the state see how well that school is and see what improvments there needs to be.
how do you get those good teachers? fire the ones who dont care? make the teachers have masters degrees? it is hard to contole that part. finding good teachers is hard.

I would go with the higher wages, which will cause the willingness for people more capable of teaching to teach.

fear is a great motivator.

And a great deterrent.

if someone drops out of highschool, the hell they will face will make them want to go back and get their highschool degree.

Well, how can we have these people get back onto the right track? 9 times out of 10, people don't know if they even can go back to high school, and if they do know, they can't because they are supporting themselves with more then 1 job. The GED program is a step towards people in this situation, and I feel that the GED guidelines should be increased so that a person can get a GED and go to college.

the students of today are the future of tomarrow.

Unfortunately.

i fear that if we dont do something now, we will have alot of ditch diggers and fewer people working in the business world.

The sad truth is that there has to be a lower class to support the middle class to support the upper class. Without the ditch diggers, you wouldn't have a Bill Gates, and without a Charles Merill you wouldn't have people working at McDonald's. Why do you think illegal immigration is booming? It's because we are losing those ditch diggers, those lower class workers, to white-collar jobs. As to whether these immigrants are helping the nation's economy, I do not know, but the position you hold on these "ditch diggers" is a precarious one with wide implications.

the rate of dropouts has increased. and is increasing.

Nope

Best way to prevent high school dropouts? Motivate them. Create clubs they will be of interest in. Make classes exciting, as well as push the students, but do not have unnecesary tests at the end of the year "achievement" tests. The truly best way to motivate students is to actually have teachers believe in them. That is the problem, we have teachers who could care less about whether a particular students passes or not, and the truly good teachers that we have are the ones that constantly encourage their students.

I've never heard of vector linux, but I have been running slackware for a while now. Saying that vector linux is derived from slackware, I'd say it should be a pretty good flavor of linux. Have fun experimenting!

As previously stated, I need the data. Period.

That was the second option, the first option was to download this file right here , install it, and then run it on the mp3 player which would be plugged into the usb port. This will not delete any information at all! This is assuming that the mp3 player acts as a drive when plugged in, which I see as quite likely. Also, you should select the "Find a lost drive" option, which will search for deleted partitions(deleted, not erased).

Response to: Getting files from a RAW drive? Posted April 18th, 2006 in Programming

To get back your file system you need to do one of two things:
1) Get a special utility like the one I showed and use that and hopefully that can restore your partition, which will restore your file system
2) Right click on your device in My Computer and click Format. Note, this will only work if your mp3 player acts as a drive when connected to the computer. Oh, and this will remove all of your data, possibly even permanently.

Response to: Getting files from a RAW drive? Posted April 17th, 2006 in Programming

Alright, mp3 players 9 times out of 10 has FAT as it's file system, as to what flavor, I need to know some more information like what is the size of the mp3 player, etc. A quick search for "fat recovery freeware" came up with This . The only problem I foresee with this is that it doesn't do fat24, which might or might not be really a problem. Also, if your computer just did a quickformat of the drive, then most likely it could restore the mp3 player back into it's pristine condition without too much hastle.

I actually couldn't even find that model number anywhere. My suggestion is just to use a generic ethernet module, and if that doesn't work, then switch out that ethernet adapter to one that is supported under linux.

The code looks fine to me, but since it's a menu, you might want to do a do...while loop instead of just a while. It's the same thing but the menu is automatically printed at least once whenever there's a chance that it might not be. Besides that, the only problem I see with the code is that you mixed up the printing of hello and goodbye.

Response to: Help with Linux. Posted March 23rd, 2006 in Programming

One thing, for Linux the partition should not be a windows logical drive. Also, saying that you have drives up to L:\, there's a good possibility that you are going to have to review your partitioning scheme on the computer. On a single drive, you can only have 5 maximum partitions (4 primary + 1 extended) because of lack of insight from the creators of MS-DOS. So most likely you are using all of this. Second of all, if you want to experiment with Linux, it is actually best to do it in two scenarios:
a) On an old computer that can be thrown away
b) From a live cd that will not mess with your hard drive

If you don't do these, then there is a high chance you'll delete all of information for windows, and trust me it is quite easy to do.. for instance the following
"mkswap /dev//hda4" will create a swap partition on the 4th primary partition on the hard drive, but if you accidently types in hda1 instead, your files for windows will be completely erased. There are other commands that are even more similar in the variations and a whitespace will actually cause your hard drive to be wiped out, but I forgot those at the moment... So follow those two steps that I outlined, or else you can really fuck up your computer.

Response to: Hosting Yourself ? Posted March 4th, 2006 in Programming

It is possible to host by yourself, and using a router like a linksys WRTP54G Router you can configure the router with a DNS server. There are way too many cons against hosting a site by yourself. One is that most ISP's do not allow you to do so, and they can cancel your account if they find out that you are hosting a site. So before you even think about doing this, check your contract with the ISP. Second of all, you just don't get enough bandwidth over a typical asymetric connection. Even though you may download stuff at extreme speeds (200-300 kbps +), your upload to the internet is usually utter crap, around 40-50 kbps upload maximum. There's no way you can provide decent interactive content with that connection.

So overall what everyone is saying is don't.

Spaghetti code is what labels and go to's create, and they are notoriously difficult to diagnose. It is ten times easier to do a predifined loop, some functions, and maybe even a switch statement.

Response to: Router, WTF >=[??? Posted February 23rd, 2006 in Programming

You can not change your IP address into something that is more mnemonic like www.google.com without registering a domain name. There are servers out there that take requests from end-users in the form of "www.google.com" or any other website, and then translates this into an IP address. These servers are called Domain Name Servers. Here's a good introduction on DNS and a way you can host a website with a more memorable name rather then just using your ip address (Link ) Actually I'm not sure if the answers answer that problem, but it seems pretty in depth to recommend it.

Response to: Router, WTF >=[??? Posted February 22nd, 2006 in Programming

I'm assuming you received that IP address over a DHCP service from your ISP. What I need you to do is to go and see what your subnet mask is of your server and write this down somewhere, we're going to need to use it later.

The problem is just a configuration problem and that is all. You need to configure the NAT/PAT table on your router, and you need to change the server's ip address to something like 192.168.0.12 or something, the last octet can be anywhere from 2 to 254. The router will do this one thing called a NAT/PAT(Network Address Translation/Port Address Translation), which it will modify the ip address and switch it out with the public ip address you have been assigned, which I am assuming is 82.42.99.118. So let me repeat that step by step...

1) Assign your server the IP address of 192.168.0.12
a) Go to Network Connections
b) Right Click on the Connection then Select TCP/IP then go to properties
c) Give your computer the IP Address of 192.168.0.12, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 (Which is your router)

2) Enable Port Forwarding
a) Go to 192.168.0.1 in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox
b) The default username is "admin" and the password is "password" without the quotes
c) On the left toolbar there will be a selection of Port Forwarding, go there
d) Now type in the LAN IP address of your server, which is 192.168.0.12, and enable the services that you need. If your ftp doesn't work after using the services you can select, create a custom service that enables port 20(the data transfer port) to your router.

Now your router will do PAT translation(It's not really NAT anymore because it's solely based upon ports) All that we have to do is have the router be able to communicate with your assigned IP address from your service provider, which that would be 82.42.99.118... and here are the steps to do that.

3) Configure Your Router With the Public IP Address
a) While still configuring your router, go to basic settings
b) There should be an option to assign a static ip address to the router, not to the server or any other thing on the network, only the router
c) Now in there type 82.42.99.118 for the IP address and the subnet mask that you wrote down in the first step all the way up at the top...

Hopefully that will help you.

Anyways, why the hell are we even contemplating that the Matrix is a possibility in real life?

Response to: Reformatting Posted February 10th, 2006 in Programming

Well, there's a couple things you have to think about when reformatting a drive. One is, why the fuck are you wanting to do it? Anyways, if you're sure you want to erase everything off of the computer what you need to do is create a windows boot-up floopy, and once you boot from the A:\ drive type in "format c:\" without the paranthesis at the prompt. From there, you have a completely unbootable computer (except for ms-dos which is the OS your using with the floppy drive) until you reinstall windows. Anyways, when you reinstall windows on a given partition, it automatically reformats it for you, so I'm unsure the purpose of formatting outside of the installation of Windows ME.

By the way, get something better then Windows ME, it is the worst Windows flavor ever. Upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP.

Response to: Networking Posted February 9th, 2006 in Programming

So let me just reconfirm what the network is right now, ok? You have a cable/dsl modem connected to an access point, and from there you hook up a wire and/or have a wireless connection to one computer and the same for the other computer? Well, I might need some specifics now, like the brand of the AP, what OS'es your using(I've been assuming Windows XP), and any other description of your network.

Response to: Networking Posted February 9th, 2006 in Programming

I have a question, is the access point in lieu of a router? If that's the case, then the access point cannot do Network Access Translations, and in order to get the internet connected to the other computer you will need to put a router between the access point and the modem.

As to the reason that you cannot ping between the computers: it could possibly be due to the Windows Firewall preventing ICMP replies. What you need to do to double check to if this is happening is to open up a Command Prompt and type in "netsh firewall show icmpsetting". If it says something like disabled then that is why you cannot ping the your computer from the other one. If not, then maybe on the switch it prevents ICMP messages, but I highly doubt that.
