Topic: Noir(ish) Style Thread...

Posted: 01/30/09 08:57 AM

Forum: Art

Keep in mind that Film Noir actually existed (though it didn't have a name at the time) before World War 2....and was deeply tied to the German Expressionist movement of the 1910's and 20's. A lot of Film Noir directors were Jewish-Americans, but I think it's unfair to simplify something as huge as Noir as being Jewish, let alone a direct response to World War 2. I don't usually say "check out Wikipedia" but hell, I looked over the article and it's more complete than my film school textbooks. Hell, there's still a debate about what exactly is Noir, since many Noir Directors didn't know they were shooting the style at the time. Wonky, right?

Whenever I open this thread, the Mortal Kombat announcer exclaims "You will Never Win."
Of course, that happens every time I open any thread. On the flipside, opening pornography makes it say "Excellent", so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Awesome stuff across the board, art-wise. And by Awesome I mean "I want to make a Giant Ballsack-a-saur in Spore and eat your creatures with them."

Damn it, I totally forgot to post my proto-Crispin Glover pics before putting up Mr. Final. Instead, allow me to share a scan from my notebook of what would end up generating tiny Crispin. I might end up inking this as a second entry, but, hey, it's something to share.

Well, it's been a while since I've done some art for the NG forum, but here goes. I went in a slightly different direction with what my fantasy pet would be. I still stand by my choice though. In other news, this one was painted analog-style with acrylic, ink, and watercolour. Enjoy.

He was not very successful about the hot girl part, so I used a few more refs.

Man, your brother sure does take is role seriously. I think it's his expression that sells "hot chick". Or maybe the phantom crotch lurking to his left.. That said, thanks for sharing the reference pic...that's hilarious.

About your colour question, I'd say if the final product is actually sci-fi fantasy-like, then I'd say don't change. I'm not exactly sure what the final pic will be, but really you have to decide whether the fantasy aspect of this is "topless stripper sheriff" or "Western in Hell/Alien World/Alternate Dimensions". One of those denotes you stay with the sepia, the other implies you twisted the colour scheme somewhat. It's your call...I don't know where you were heading with it. Fun stuff though. That's what, our first cowgirl?

Nifty thread idea. I'm kinda new to the forum (but kinda veteran to Newgrounds...I remember a time when you could easily say you'd seen everything on the site and Scrotum the Puppy was the newest thing next to Sloth screaming Baby Ruth with all his retard strength) and that's why I wrote that run-on sentence. Bah.

Oh weird- random follow-up art takes over bad art thread. Glad you guys dig it. To answer the question, it's literally just super-fast doodling I do with ink and a white varnish type stuff that plays nice with black ink when I point a brush at it.
And because I think I have to, here's another fast ink doodle. Of the above character. As a shriner.

Groovy stuff. Ever since I read the rule that it doesn't HAVE to be super-realistic (and even one of the kick ass examples is pretty far off from realistic) I decided to scrap my 1st try and go for something funny. I'll still submit the 1st try at reality based smut, mostly because I'm kinda happy with it. Might still toy with it a bit...I did spend a bit of time painting and repainting so that it'd look good inverted. (The original is posted a few pages back...I hate digi-effects but, well, I thought it worked.) Here's that 1st try that, like Pilate, I'm ready toI wipe my hands of.

Well, I can already tell digital photoshop mastery is going to kick my ass, but here's my work in progress for the contest. So far it's just pencil and watercolor, for what that's worth. On the plus side, I NEVER try painting smut. Which may or may not be a good thing.
Any feedback would be nice...the color scheme is going to change dramatically but this is the basic "Slave to the Digital Seed" layout I was going for.

Random question about the Art contest since I think the actual thread about it is only for final submissions....

Is Ass alright, or does it have to be BOOBS? A lot of the Heavy Metal covers glorify the power of the Thong as much as the power of cleavage, and I was curious if I could get away with that angle (literally).
Basically the best sketch/idea I have has the figure kneeling facing away/looking over her shoulder and, well, the BOOBS are not to be seen. Unless, you know, I put them on her back or face or something. Which....could work. I suppose.

So, does Ass pass or does this course have BOOBS as a prerequisite?
