Years ago huh? I don't think Adobe Flash 8 or 9 could handle 3D like this.

It was demonstrated at a conference on October 2007

When Adobe was showcasing the technology used to do so, they used Quake as a demo.

Response to: Will Flash die out? Posted March 7th, 2010 in General

The whole advent of the HTML5 vs Flash argument is usually in the context of media embedding (music, videos, etc). In other words, third party applications like Flash wouldn't be required to playback media, and it would be done more efficiently.

Flash is a completely different beast. While it can still be used for media playback, things like online games and Flash movies probably won't be affected at all. How many games do you see going around made solely in Javascript and HTML? One? Zero? Right...

Although HTML5 does have some features that would make it easier (new canvas element among other things), it would still be way too much effort compared to doing it in Flash. Plus, doing so would make all of your source code visible to the user, which wouldn't be cool with a lot of people.

Response to: Is There Really No Edit Button?! Posted February 16th, 2010 in Where is / How to?

Sad? No. The edit button has been brought up countless times, which you would've seen if you did a topic search before posting.

If you forget to say something, nobody is going to kick your ass for posting again. Otherwise, just proofread. It's not like this forum has complicated features that you can mess up and need to correct later.

It's an easter egg that pops up if you hover your mouse cursor over an "angry face" icon on the forum listing for several seconds.

If you checked the second ideas thread, you would see a list of 13 ideas in the first post that were actually implemented due, in some part, to the suggestions the thread contained.

Also, creating a new thread to post the same idea isn't going to increase the chance of it being implemented. It only decreases the chance of the idea being discovered. The thread I linked to is basically the only thread where you have the slightest of guarantees (for lack of a better word) that it will be at least glanced over by one of NG's developers. I'm assuming that the devs don't scour the forums for ideas that often to begin with. If they were, for some reason, they could easily miss a thread like this, where the title doesn't indicate that it's an idea for NG.

Just giving a general reminder to everyone that there's a thread dedicated to posting ideas to improve Newgrounds. I wouldn't recommend this particular idea, though. If my memory serves me correctly, it has already been brought up several times and most likely passed on.

Response to: Core i7 in laptops? Posted October 12th, 2009 in General

As a couple posters said, they've been out for a short time already. Right now, they only come in the quad core flavor (more geared towards desktop replacements and mobile workstations), and you're not going to see the mainstream dual core variant until Intel rolls out more of their 32nm refresh. They're expected within the end of this year and mainstream availability will probably be early next year.

If you're going to be gaming, you're way, way better off getting a laptop with a beefy video card, and you may be hard-pressed to get both that and a mobile i7 on your budget. If mobility is not important to you, you could build a desktop computer that would mop the floor with (and steal the lunch money from) any laptop you could buy for the same price. You could even do this and have enough money left over for a netbook for everything else.

There aren't enough games out there that take advantage of quad core processors to justify the weight it has in your decision. Mobile i7 may not have a huge advantage over its Core2 counterpart when it comes to gaming, but it completely spanks it in other areas which are likely not important to you.

Also, let me introduce you to my Asus w90vp-X2. Runs great with its dual Intel X25-M SSDs in Raid0. I think you two would get along! Great for stuff like Fallout3 or Crysis while on the road.

thats interesting do you mined posting the full specs of this computer you make claims to.

anyways here are some computers in Canada that compare to the MacPro Click here

Sure, no prob.

Taken from the Mac Pro (Quad Core) configuration page

2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon*
8gb (4x2gb) 1066MHz DDR3*
640GB hard drive
2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB
18x SuperDrive (CD/DVR burner)
No display/additional software

$3,399

*The quad core Xeon they're talking about is actually the server variant of the Core i7 940, which supports dual processor configurations and error correcting memory. I'm not sure why they do this, because 1) This isn't a dual processor configuration. The amount of money wasted here is HUGE, and 2) Error correcting memory is slower and more expensive. Memory errors are actually extremely rare and typically used in enterprise environments where they don't want to take even the tiniest chance

Something in the ballpark of my configuration: (I'll take most of the prices from newegg.com, although lower prices are guaranteed to be found if you do sufficient searching)

2.66gHz Intel Core i7 920*
$279.99
2x NVIDIA Geforce GTX 260 896mb $378.98 (Not including $40 rebate)
640gb hard drive (7200rpm like the mac) $69.99
12gb (2 3x2gb kits) 1600MHz DDR3 $239.98
Upper-end X58 chipset motherboard $219.99 (Not including $15 rebate)
22x CD/DVD burner $30.99
750W corsair power supply $119.99 (Not including $10 rebate)

(Items below are subject to personal preference. Cost estimates are generous)

Decent CPU cooler: $50
Keyboard and mouse: $50
Decent case/fans: $100
Windows: $200 (As a CS student at my university, this was actually free)**
Shipping: $50

* Adjust BIOS settings in motherboard to run the processor 100% stable at 3.6GHz+ (Many enthusiasts get 4.0GHz+ just on air cooling)
** Operating system is your choice. Subtract cost if you want to use a free operating system, of course.

Cost of this system before rebate: $1,790.91
Cost of this system if you bother doing rebates: $1725.91

If you're scared of overclocking for some stupid reason but want the same proc speed as the mac, even though it turns a $200 processor in to a $1000+ processor for free, subsitute the i7 920 with a i7 940 and add $185. (No need for the ~$50 third party cooler if you don't overclock): $1910.91

If you want to use a *nix operating system, most are free. Subtract the $200: $1525.91 (Post rebate with overclocking) or $1710.91 (Post rebate, no overclocking)

The above configuration will leave you with an extra $1,650 (give or take) and will blow the socks off of the Mac Pro (Especially if you're not a newb and overclock). This can be, what, a 30" monitor and a Blu-Ray burner? Or maybe some solid state drives? You could still use the server variants of some aforementioned hardware and still save many hundreds of dollars. Or just build an octo core or something.

Response to: Why does everybody hate macs? Posted September 7th, 2009 in General

Macs are just computers. I don't prefer them because they cost significantly more to do the same thing.

Not a big fan of the operating system either.

The machine I built for $1800 would cost over $3400 if I built a similar Mac Pro on Apple.com ... except the Mac Pro would have a slower processor, less memory, slower memory, less storage capacity, much worse video cards, and a slower optical drive that only reads CDs and DVDs

What a deal!!

Response to: Macbook Or Macbook Pro 13" Posted September 7th, 2009 in General

Meant to include this in my first post, but if you've got your mind set on a Mac, go with the pro.

I wouldn't recommend a laptop for animating, though. You're way better off getting a desktop computer unless mobility is a huge importance to you.

windows also doesnt support all hardware, sadly, they dont say so, resulting in a slower and most of the time more expensive pc then you'd have otherwise.

Is this some sort of joke? 99% of the time, Macs and "PCs" use the same exact hardware in the first place. If you're upgrading a component other than the hard drive or memory, better break out the soldering iron!. Actually in most cases it's just impossible

By the way, the Apple variant of most hardware has a huge price markup. X1900 XT apple upgrade kit: $399 at the Apple store. This card is 3.5 years old and a piece of shit nowadays! You can find it in new condition on eBay for $50+ or in some stores for $80+

Mac supports x64 wich is really fast too.

There have been 64bit versions of Windows since Windows Server 2003 64bit. Wouldn't surprise me if there were earlier versions. Too bad the vast majority of software out there doesn't isn't 64 bit. Of course, there are 64bit operating systems that AREN'T Windows, too.

the boot times are lower (I have a nearly full HD and it still boots in 20 secs, my pc has 20% full and boots in 3 minutes, and yes, the pc is powerful)

Funny that you mention this. One reason that they boot faster is they're dealing with a much smaller scope of hardware, while other machines have to be compatible with hardware from literally hundreds of different vendors. Macs may boot 10 seconds faster but at least I didn't pay $2500 for a 12gb RAM upgrade kit

because the hardware is max compability it will run everything better.

64 bit windows doesnt support 32 bit apps thus being pretty useless.

64 bit is a whole different kind of binary, wich is used to calculate things faster, so it really speeds up things, not just more RAM.

It's pretty obvious at this point that you've no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Here's a screenshot of some of the processes running on my Vista Business 64bit OS. See those that are suffixed with "*32"? Yeah, those are all 32 bit apps. Could it be because ... 32 bit apps are actually supported? Hurrdurr...

What the hell is the point in being a dick about this? Not all of us have a computer just for shitting around. I already have a powerful computer for what I do, so it'd be stupid to spend money on a game console when I can play the same games on my computer, which, by the way, allows me to play at over four times the resolution of 720 "hd". I also get to maintain full control over my graphics driver settings and basically every.thing.else.
