It's hard to say, but if I had to bet, I'd say Flash games because there's no good alternative to the object-oriented model of AS3 for the web yet. All the fancy HTML5 and CSS3 stuff would still be driven by Javascript, and OOP in Javascript feels fake at best (It is prototype-based after all). Sure, some simple games might be better implemented in Javascript and friends, and it would probably run faster, but as soon as you start wanting to make classes and shit, fuhgettaboutit.

It's got a fucking dual core CPU, I would have expected at least 8 cores for that price.

Anyway, build your own, it's not very hard and if you have a budget like that you could get a dual XEON setup (12 cores).

So you look at a website that's on a Swedish domain using the Swedish language, and you think they're talking in what ... American Dollars? 3990 Swedish kronor is about $587. Mac pros, according to the Swedish Apple site, start at 23990 kr. Even buying two of the cheapest 6 core Xeons would run at least $2000 and it sure as hell would be more in Europe. As for building: Depending on where you are, you might be paying a huge premium on electronics.

And to the OP, I'm honestly not sure. It's pretty hard to know what a good deal is for your location. You could always just put in some elbow grease and do a lot of comparisons. If you're a little more technologically inclined, you could do a little more research in to what each of the parts would cost if you were to purchase them. You'd also probably have more luck asking somebody who's local.

Yes, for a while I was too cool to use any social sites too, staying away from the whole Facebook thing as long as I can. However, several contacts in various industries and in academia use it heavily. Facebook chat is the only real way I have of contacting several of them.

That still doesn't mean I don't hate the hell out of it. Nothing like having pictures of you put online every time one of your friends or family used a camera, or the 5% of friends that constitute 90% of all the status updates. I get on a couple times a month unless I need to talk to someone or check something.

Depending on how much RAM you have and the size of your hard drive, Windows will claim chunks of disk space for the page file and shadow copy/system restore respectively. When I installed Win7 on my machine, which has 24GB of RAM, it had a ridiculous 36GB page file. You'll probably be able to take a huge chunk out of 12.3GB with a few tweaks.

Response to: Apple Hate? Posted October 24th, 2010 in General

Sure, Apple makes overpriced boutique computers, but that's not what it is about for everybody.

For some, it's because they often treat their partners or developers like shit, like changing the terms of service to target and block a specific app (Google Voice) , dicking around with their app store policies every other week (We're going to pull down thousands of apps because they're too explicit. By the way, we're adding a new 'explicit' section), telling you that you're not allowed to use third party development tools (Hey guys, you can only use our SDK. No Flash or anything. Oh wait, we might think of allowing PhoneGap, but first let us make sure our terms of service don't allow Flash). Hell, they even tell you what programming language it has to be in

For others, it's the fact that they're ludicrously controlling with what you can do with your hardware, or what software can run on it. I won't get in to that much. There's a reason most people say "Jailbreaking" for iPhones and "rooting" for other platforms. (Which, of course, Apple bitched about and it took the Library of Congress with a DMCA ruling to shut them up...)

I personally would go to a more traditional school (Although this is a hotly debated topic). Digipen isn't even regionally accredited. What happens if your "game degree" can't get you a job in the very-competitive and often heartless game industry? Well, you're in trouble for starters. If you get a well-rounded education in, say, Computer Science, you'll still be able to make games. You'll be enabled to do other things too, if needed.

Probably this bigass dragon statue. You can only find it online in a couple galleries for ~$9,000-10,000. I spent a fraction of that. Hopefully it only gets more valuable over time! Not that I'm particularly interested in selling it, because it's too awesome for that.

Useless without pics so here's one. Too lazy to take actual picture of statue so here's a gallery photo of it

That looks really nice, although I hear that water-cooling is more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.

It actually is a huge pain in the ass, to be honest. I assembled the water cooling parts while I was really busy with life, meaning that it took me 3 or 4 days of off-and-on work to get everything hooked up just right. Then there's all the leak testing, fighting off algae, and all that good stuff. However, I think it was totally worth it. I can now overclock the hell out of everything and not worry about temps at all. Even better is the fact that it's QUIET. Prior to setting up the water cooling, my GTX 480s sounded like a leaf blower while under load.

That must have cost a lot of money, though. I wish that I could afford that kind of hardware, although I'd switch the video card for the HD 5970.

GTX 480 SLI is quite better than the 5970 (albeit more expensive), so I wouldn't really. SLI scales better than Crossfire (There doesn't really seem to be much debate over that either). Plus it tends to work better at the resolution I'm playing at. I do love my anti aliasing..

Is your PSU modular? Sleeved? Do you really need all 1200 watts? How nice is the 6-core? Is it worth it to get one over a quad-core for gaming? Just out of curiosity, how much did that run you?

Fully modular. With all the overclocking I'm doing, plus adding in a third GPU (Maybe even a third GTX 480 or a similar setup in future-gen cards), 1200 watts is going to keep me safe. It's not just about that, though. This PSU is 80 Plus Gold rated, meaning it runs cooler and much more efficiently than the HX1000 I upgraded from.

The Intel 6-core is awesome, but don't get one for gaming. At least not for a while. AMD has 6 core CPUs if you really want one, but they barely even trade blows with quad core i7s, even in multithreaded scenarios. It's nice because I do a lot of 3D rendering, and it's literally more than 50% faster than the i7 920 I upgraded from! I purchased the CPU OEM on eBay for around $800.

Obligatory semi-annual computer thread, huh? Sure I'll bite. I like computers.

CPU: Core i7 980x (6-core), water cooled and running at 4.23GHz
Memory: 24GB (6x4GB) DDR3 @ 1420MHz 9-9-9-24 (G.Skill Ripjaws)
GPUs: 2 x Nvidia GTX 480s in SLI, water cooled, heavily overclocked (running at 890/1780/2103). Also have a GTX 260 hooked up for the occasional game that uses PhysX, and will also help me in folding @ home soon
Storage: 3 x Intel x25-M (2nd Gen.) 80GB Solid State Drives in RAID 0 (For OS and Games/Software) and 2 x TB HDDs for project storage (3D renders, Video projects, Fluid simulations, etc)
PSU: Corsair AX-1200 (1200 Watt power supply)
Mobo: EVGA x58 Tri-SLI
Monitor: Dell 3007WFP-HC (30" monitor, 2560x1600 resolution). Some day I'll hook up two more for Nvidia's surround goodness! Or Eyefinity if ATI is the better choice at the time.
Case: Cooler Master Cosmos S RC-1100

Water cooling:
Pump: Swiftech MCP655
Tubing: Tygon R-3603. Best tubing ever! Little expensive though...
CPU Block: EK Waterblocks EK-Supreme HF (Acetal + Nickel)
GPU Blocks: 2 x EK Waterblocks EK-FC480 GTX (Acetal + Nickel)
Radiators: 3 x HW Labs Black Ice SR1 (2 x 360, 1 x 240)
Reservoir: Swiftech MCRES Micro Rev. 2
And a buttload of Scythe GentleTyphoon fans.

Here's an outdated picture. Things that have changed since this picture are the PSU (Corsair HX1000 -> AX1200), Memory (12GB OCZ Gold -> 24GB G.Skill ripjaws), the third GPU that I popped in (GTX 260), and the 2TB hard drives.

Also I've fixed my cabling, lol.

What you linked was a already superclocked card (aka 40+$ for a 5 minute clock from a base card)

That's USUALLY true, but you're missing out on a few things...

Firstly OP linked to a stock card to begin with when there's actually a superclocked card that's $10 cheaper, or $20 cheaper if you include a rebate. That sort of throws your whole point out the window.

Also, EVGA, while being one of the best companies warranty and customer-service wise, does have confusing SKUs on their products sometimes. As far as I know, there are NO stock-clocked EVGA GTX 460s that have a lifetime warranty. Only part numbers that end in 'AR' (e.g. 768-P3-1362-AR, like what I linked to) have it. Those that end in 'TR' only have two years. This is really important to some people, and not as much to others.

OP might also not want to overclock their card. The card I linked to will A) Get you slightly higher speeds for someone who doesn't care to overclock, B) A lifetime instead of a 2-year warranty and C) Gets you both A and B for a really small premium, or actually less money than OP linked to if you factor in the rebate.

Two year warranties vs lifetime warranties isn't important to everyone. In that case, here is a card that's $10 less than the one I first linked to. There are some other manufacturers you can buy from for a little less money (Gigabyte, ASUS, etc) but, in my opinion, god forbid you ever have a problem with the card because those companies don't really compare to the service EVGA gives you.

That page is ANCIENT (few months old). Prices have changed, a couple new cards are out, and that list would be a lot different now.

I would definitely get an EVGA GTX 460. The one you linked to has a 2 year warranty, but this one has a lifetime warranty and happens to be the same price at the moment. You'll end up paying a few more bucks for the shipping, but it also happens to have a $10 rebate which, if you bother doing, would make it cheaper than the card you linked to and still have the lifetime warranty.

Just make sure you don't forget to register the card when you receive it.

Really guys? Do you know this little? "Diablo 2 didn't work" implies nothing about 64 bit problems and is not a valid reason to not get a 64 bit OS. I have games older than you that worked just fine in 64 bit versions of Vista and 7. Diablo 2 included. The only 64 bit OS to stay away from (because of shitty 64 bit support) is Windows XP Professional x64 edition, primarily because nobody really gave a shit about it. 32 bit software runs just fine, but you'll need 64 bit device drivers. Pretty much everything that was made in the past 6 years or so has 64 bit drivers. Device drivers are 99% of peoples' 64 bit problems, and 99% of those people are trying to hook up their fifty pound, fifteen year old laser printer.

With that said, you're not really going to need 64 bit if you never plan on having more than 4gb of RAM or you have software that is 64 bit only (rare). It sure as hell isn't worth the trouble downgrading to 32 bit if it comes with 64 bit though.

It's also hard to give good advice without knowing what the price on each machine is and what you hope to get out of your laptop. Gaming on a laptop won't blow your mind (unless you pay a huge price premium). If you do crazy (read: crazy) multitasking, get laptop #3 with the quad-core i7-720QM. It is, overall, better than the other processors which are dual cores (Although the dual cores will turbo up to a slightly higher frequency if only one core is loaded, which will may marginally outperform the 720QM in some circumstances). The GPU on laptop #3 is also the best, but not by any impressive margin.

Lastly, your personal preferences should weigh especially heavily in your decision because it's a laptop. If you're rarely going to move it, that's one thing to consider, but size, weight, and battery life are huge things to consider if you plan on being mobile.

I'm aware of the split-screen features. It's just like having a new window that's always forced to be next to another window. No thanks.

It's awkward having a huge resolution, and then only using a tiny percentage of it for what you're actively doing. Why have three websites in a single tabbed window with vast amounts of empty space around it when you can have three full-sized windows showing everything at the same time? I just don't see a reason to use tabs.
