You are forgetting that everyone is different and each person takes things differently. You may see something as tiny and insignificant. But, to someone else it may be a very big deal. I see offense as a way of showing people that you do not want to continue down that path.

On the other hand, offense is a survival mechanism. Do you find the smell of other people's feaces offensive? You most likely do. The reason as to this is because feaces, in it fresh and warm state is very high in microbes; some of which cause disease. Thus, this offense response stops you from rubbing your nose in that warm pile and reducing your chance of getting sick and the possibility of dying.

A decent rule to follow with character design is that if you can't distinguish your characters by silhouette alone then you should rethink their designs.

The only problem with atheism is when you get people who sit there and try to force their own opinions onto you. Same goes for any religion/belief. I have no problem with people believing what they want, just leave me out of it...
