Alright, Shih, we get your point. Now you're just turning this topic into an anti-frog-baseball topic.

As far as other repurcussions of the internet, free-flowing information is also taking its toll on copyright. Any news reported by one source can be rewritten and reproduced elsewhere on the Internet within a few minutes. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The ramifications of easy distribution for music, books, and eventually for movies, are far greater.
Napster isn't dead, whatever the music industry says. A site that quadruples its user base over seven months can't be written off that easily. If the courts close it, something else will take its place, possibly based on ICQ or other peer to peer versions of the Internet. The demand is there.
Yet illegal copying of music has been going on for decades (just visit a cassette store in any undeveloped country) and probably isn't the huge threat that music chiefs make it out to be. It's easy distribution of material by a private individuals that's the real threat to the entertainment corporations.

That may be, but I'm just tired from all that work I had to do satisfying your sister (unless you don't have a sister, in which case I revert to your girlfriend, and, in the event of such that you do not posess either, I move to your hottest living female relative) last night!

The Internet is changing human society, just as railways, cars and telephones changed it in eras gone by. It's also changing it very quickly. It took railways a couple of generations to sew far-flung cities together and create powerful, prosperous nations. It took cars a couple of generations to urbanise those cities, dilute their cores, and take over the countryside. But most of the effects of the Internet will be felt within a single generation - even a single decade.
Without doubt the most powerful influence of the Internet is on information flow. Suddenly all kinds of information can be digitised and passed on to millions of people in a few seconds. Everything from news to music, commercial proposals to protesters' meeting plans. This is new. Most of that information took hours or even days to be transmitted before, especially if there were many recipients.
This is but a scratch on the surface of the effect the internet has upon the world and society. What are some of the more positive and negative effects of the internet, and how has it changed the way everything worked in the last 15 years?
True, so true. Fitting, I think.
Do you know why we're mad at France? It has nothing to do with the war or politics. No sir, it's because of how quickly we can flock to animal-ball sports. Tsk, Tsk. As for ball opinions, I agree that a frog makes a good general baseball, but gophers are indeed easier to pitch.

Upon reaching this minor milestone of 400 posts, I'd like to thank all of the stupid people I had to crush to get here, as well as all of the friendly folks who encouraged me to do so. Thank you to all the people at the Politics Crew. That being said, I'd like to say that we are living in ficticious times, with a ficticious president...

Actually Shrike, this was the perfect time to "kick" the frog, and you decided to punt. That's a 5 yard penalty. Re-do kickoff.
Good answers, all, but I have to say that I have to appreciate human culture as a whole, rather than any one civilization or nationality.
Humanity (in the best of times, now, not the more ugly points) has shown amazing tenacity for self-advancement. We're insane, sure, but it goes both ways. Look at what Columbus did. He very well thought he might be sailing off of the end of the world. The whole space exploration program is terrifying, to say the least. Look at us, and all we've done, and it's just incredibly hard for me to comprehend that we've developed such incredibly complex and abstract concepts, such as love, art, government, and music. We might be pretty primitive compared to some other possible race in the universe, but all we have, currently, is the rest of the animals, over which we have seemed to grow dominant. Now, if people could just realize we should be in it for the species, then we'd all be better off.

So, how do atheists define morality if they dont have a church to do it for them?
Once again, you're saying that I need a big invisible man to scare me into being a nice guy. Didn't your parents use any other method of geeting you to be a good person other than threatening you with the wrath of God? Morals come from a host of places other than religion, such as parenting, personal experiences, and how you percieve the world. Nobody should "not do something" on the basis of "God said not to" alone. If you don't kill a man simply because God said not to, you're still a bad person, and you're just afraid of suffering his wrath.
What brought you back? What was the final blow?
Interersting point that I was in the process of making, but you beat me to it. I need to learn how to type quickly without looking at the keyboard. Any thoughts on the morality of a world without religion?

Furhtermore if he is so powerful, couldn't he tell who really belives in him or not. I'm sure that a lot of people pray and read the bible just because they want to go in this so called "heaven" when they die, their prayers don't come from the heart. As far as the argument goes about man trying to play god, if god exists don't you think that he wouldn't want us to do such things as cloning and the such? The point I am trying to make is that one can argue that he gave us the ability(if he does exist) to use our brains and we're using them.
No, no no no... We aren't turning this into a "God doesn't exist" forum. There are already too many of those. The point of this thread is to determine whether or not athiests can have morals. I think they can. I'm an athiest, and I think I'm a pretty good person (ask around if you happen to think that this is a biased answer). Your moral structure doesn't have to revolve around you cringing in fear and not doing anything because of a big invisible dude in the sky. I try to be a good person to be a good person. Crazy, ain't it? I don't believe in God, so does that mean I'm going to start killing and stealing and raping? No- because I just don't want to be a dick.
I think it's a face we all make, isn't it? Mine's more a look of confusion, though, instead of anger. Until I realize that they're serious. then I laugh at their stupidity. :p

..i see you had to look that up! Can't remember your facts then? - LOL
I do this to lend credibility to my arguments. Otherwise, I just look like some jackass who's climbed onto a soapbox with a bullhorn to spout opinions. Plus, if you find any of it to be untrue, you have to write the scientists a letter. Not me. I just quote them.
the problem with regurgitating (not twisting) other peoples facts, is that you are missing the point -
..marijuana is a recreation drug, a social drug. People take drugs to "chill out" and knock off all the barrage of negativity and facts that come flooding at us all day long.
I didn't say that it wasn't. People ask how it affects them, and I tell them. I don't think I've shown any bias on this issue at all. If you look back, you'll notice I actually want it legalized.
Our human brain wasn't designed for 16-hour days of data overload, work overload, advertising overload, and world's (depressing) wars and news overload. How would you then switch off at night and relax, or sleep after that?? ...personally, sleep doesn't do that for me and many others, kos our dreams (or nightmares) are so very active and exhausting - we're as likely to wake up more tired than when we went to sleep!
Yup... No disagreement, believe me.
Facts and memory are important, but when THC enters the brain you switch to another level and "see things differently" or "see things in perspective" ..you might be in the moment (paranoid of an earthquake or police bust, or some shit like that) but the brain is taking a "time out". Seeing things on another level you actually develop new methods of storing information, so saying "it imapairs memory" is over simplistic for a neural system that we a filling with movies and emotions and details that don't even ensure our survival.
I'm a little confused about what you meant here. Are you saying weed doesn't impair your judgement/memory because it just doesn't, or because on weed you store useless information, or because our brains are so complex that we store useless information completely independent of weed manipulation? Are you saying that because we're seeing things in another perspective that we don't save our short term memories properly? Besides, how is "it impairs memory" overly simplistic? Are you saying that test subjects in a confined, isolated experiment never experienced short term memory loss from introduction of THC into their systems? I'm just quoting, now, so if you want to chew someone out for it, chew out NIDA.
-THC also influences emotions, by acting on a region of the brain called the limbic system, which is why marjuana users can be overwhelmed by laughter one minute, and paranoia the next.yeah! i'd rather be a robot :D
You can experience emotion without the advent of marijuana to your system, I'd hope. If not, I think you might have a problem. Besides, it's not saying it causes these emotions. It just messes with your brain so they're thrown out of whack.
Some of THC's effects are useful in the world of medicine -- like preventing nausea and blocking pain.anti-depressant? appetizer? mood-enhancer? socializer? relaxant? anti-insomniant? creativity? and a whole list of medical benefits............
I listed two, because I didn't want to quote the entirety of "possible" effects of mariujana/THC's usage. Not everyone is anti-depressed/given the munchies/had their mood "enhanced"/made creative/made social/relaxed/made sleepy/etc., and to use those arguments, you'd need to state what else could happen. Plenty of people get hyper on weed, and plenty of people just get more depressed. Those two I stated are the most commonly used arguments for medicinal usage, and so that's what I used. I did say that this was "some" of the benefits. No need to jump on my ass about details.
Researchers developing medications that are chemically similar to THC but less harmful..how expensive??? how industrialized? how are you sure chemical pills and treatments won't have side effects? who is doing the "independant scientific research"..??
Oh, the companies selling pills of-course !!!
God forbid, we come up with something like artificial THC that has all of the benefits, but none of the disadvantages, and is a much more stable way of using the drug for "medicinal" purposes.
..give me weed than prozac anyday!!
Ugh... Prozac gives me nightmares. My ex-girlfriend used to take it as an anti-depressant. She'd wake up screaming in the middle of the night because of the dreams it gave her. Odd stuff, that Prozac. She takes Wellbutrin, now.
Anyway, there's all my points. I think I'm done talking about weed for awhile. It makes me think of my ex-girlfriend, and then I get all teary-eyed, goddammit.
