You? You're still alive?

Forum members are invited to post some of their (non-personal information) so that we have a good idea of just who you are and what your background is. This can include:
Your profession or course of academic study

Computer science. I've been focusing a tad on web programming lately. I still get into political arguments often enough, though.

Issues that are of special concern to you

People putting down net neutrality get my all frothy at the mouth. Beyond my field of study, though, general issues that put innocent people in undue circumstances for no rational reason (like the gay marriage issue in the US), ignorance of science, and mindless ideological jingoism (Beck, et al.) all bug me. I'm inclined to enter discussions about those materials, except when the people involved in said discussions have no bloody idea what they're talking about. When I encounter embarrassing ignorance, I usually just slink away and shake my head (which also explains my lack of activity around here).

Issues you know little or nothing about but want to learn about

History can be a rich and fascinating subject. I'd love to talk to a historian about parallels between today's world and the political movements of the past. It would be very enlightening. That's not so much an issue, though, so I'll just pick something slightly more specific: Let's say the history of religious fundamentalism and religiosity.

Your political leanings (and, more interestingly, how you came to develop them)

I'm fairly libertarian in social issues. Locking resources into some centralized source of control seems potentially and likely inefficient. However, I also support exceptions to this rule where there are practical needs for it, like in cases of welfare. I don't have a story to describe how I got to any of these beliefs; I'm just inclined to think about things in a mechanized way and this is what I concluded was best for everyone.

etc. etc.

I'm a Gemini and I enjoy cool, rainy days and hot, sexy nights. I'm 6'5", which some women find intimidating, but don't worry ladies: I don't bite. Unless you ask me to. RAWR. ;D

Some interesting stuff going on in here. Interesting, interesting stuff.

Response to: Re-Schedule Marijuana Posted January 11th, 2010 in Politics

Interestingly, you can view a comparison between actual deaths caused by certain drugs and the media coverage they receive in this graphic. That chart also includes material showing deaths as a proportion of the populace that uses those drugs. Note that cannabis is marked as highly suspect, and that's because the slim number of deaths caused by cannabis is likely an exaggeration.

I'd also like to point to the Wikipedia article for this subject.

I would normally rebuke something in the discussion if I bothered to post, but I can't say there's anything for me to disagree with here. If anything, I would go one further and argue for decriminalization. And I don't smoke it.

Update: We're discussing shitty vampire novels for 13-year-old girls. We're also talking about lynching.

These subjects are not mutually exclusive.

I've tried it, and like the fact that I can give a direct link to the chat using it. It also has a half-decent layout, albeit horrible colour scheme. Altogether, if someone needs a java client, mibbit is probably a good way to go.

Now, we were just talking about using leashes on children, and it devolved into sexism and racism. We're basically having a fantastic time. People should join.

It's on irc.webchat.org or irc.webmaster.com (both domains point to the same network).

Also, discussions of gay bears and bitches being bitches are to be had. I suspect that the topic of Thai ladyboys will come up later.

Is this an affect of being new to IRC,
or should this be working for me?

Try the URL irc://irc.webchat.org, then connect to #newgrounds.com. If you have Chatzilla installed, it should work.

Response to: The Unofficial Newgrounds.com Irc Posted November 6th, 2009 in General

IRC is the most accessible chat protocol there is. There are countless clients for IRC, and all of them work with our chatroom. I'm sure that you can easily find one that fits your preferences on any OS. If you have problems with connecting, just look to see if the question has already been answered, then if it hasn't, ask away.

Response to: My dog has a tumor. Posted October 5th, 2009 in General

Life is never about its last days, or the end, but the content of its whole. If your dog enjoyed its lifetime with a loving family, then the end only exists to highlight the joys and wonders experienced during life, and to truly cement the uniqueness and beauty that life is.

John Keats' poetry is an outstanding example of a way to see death as less of a tyrant, and more of a enabler for all life. If you haven't given some of his works a good hard read, I recommend that you do.

That being said, enjoy your dog's company just as you have for every other day of its life, and nothing will have been lost. That's what life is all about.

You don't say. I didn't even do anything - I only wrote 4 lines of friendly text.

We banned mibbit in virtue of a bot flood that contained clients from that host. It wasn't aimed at you. The bots on that particular host seem to have been akilled from the network, so I undid the ban.

So, you know, we aren't TOTAL assholes.

NG has a totally unofficial, 12-year-old IRC channel on irc.webchat.org named #newgrounds.com. It's perfectly NG and BBS friendly. We're just not retard friendly.

So I've started falling behind in homework, but every time I get home from classes these days I end up trying to feed and build up the old IRC chat revival. Worse, I've started lurking on the BBS again AND I'm thinking about starting to play WoW again.

I would invent a time machine, but then I would have a new hobby to fit into my schedule.
