Just download Milkytracker. And yes, they are a form of chiptune.

Topic: What's Considered Indie??

Posted: 07/17/08 02:27 AM

Forum: Audio

Indie right now describes the new, current state of "alternative rock". Kinda like how Alternative had a sound in the 90s, it has a sound in the millennium years and that sound is commonly called "indie rock". Why they decided to call it that, I don't know. How to describe it? Eh, it's hard to, but cliche indie rock would probably be light rock with hints of electronica shoved into it. If you're wondering, no I don't really listen to it and no, I don't approve of the practically stolen name for the genre.

Nope. If you're thinking of the song that was on all the commercials with the dancing old man, this one really isn't similar.

Try 8bitcollective or something. Most people here don't know what 8 bit music is to begin with.

If you really didn't get the idea from me, this is what I was talking about.

Good luck. But I beat you to it! LOL!

I have no clue why you think you're the only one who uses Mario Paint to make music. 8bitcollective has a whole compilation release of Mario Paint songs.

A MIDI for a song whored all over middle schools alike couldn't be too hard to find. Also, it couldn't be too hard to make yourself. Like, 3 or 4 notes on that one.

Good point indeed, you got me.

I kinda disagree. I wouldn't listen to the poo soundtrack and be like, "wow, I gotta check that music artist's background!"

I guess it's an approach more geared toward sound than music then? I don't know.

Anyway, no, I already ruled nostalgia out, because most of my favourite soundtracks are from games I never had. You may have seen my link above, where I've been remaking 8-bit tunes. With only 3 channels, the music that came out of those games....

If it was geared towards sound we'd be randomly throwing beeps and noise channel blurps at no given tempo or beat, so no, not really. What I'm talking is about pushing the hardware to synths and the such, yet still using it to compose smart music. Sure, 70% chiptune attempters suck ass, but you're looking in the wrong places.

What had 3 channels? Everything I've used has 4, counting noise.

Games like Akumajou Densetsu (The japanese version of Castlevania 3, this cartridge has a sound chip giving it more channels, so the soundtrack is better than its North American counterpart) and Mega Man 2 (without a doubt the most remixed game soundtrack of all time) just had such amazing music despite the hardware limitations.

I find the music of the new chiptune scene terribly boring and overblown; it lacks the sheer compositional mastery of classic 8-bit tunes and is really a shame to the medium. It sounds like your average, simplistic modern electro or pop or modern rock except downgraded to Game Boy-esque hardware.

Now, of course, I'd like someone to prove me wrong and suggest me a reaaallly kickass chiptuner!!

A lot of modern chiptunists today use methods that are revolutionary with the hardware used. Methods of which original video game composers never even thought of. I think it's the nostalgia talking, because there are some incredible 8bit artists.

That's not the point. The point is that the people who do this just to sink your song down in ratings would no longer be anonymous, which is why they feel like they can get away with doing it.

For the added feature of vote history? The nubs might be pissed at every non 5 vote they receive and backlash with 0 votes, but on the plus side, random 0 voters would no longer be anonymous. Would maybe put a stop to the whining about the little issue.

FL Studio or Reason, FL has VSTi support (google, don't ask what it is), Reason has some better defaults, no they aren't free, no you won't be able to make a Paragon track over night. Ask no more.
