A lot of modern chiptunists today use methods that are revolutionary with the hardware used. Methods of which original video game composers never even thought of. I think it's the nostalgia talking, because there are some incredible 8bit artists.
I guess it's an approach more geared toward sound than music then? I don't know.
Anyway, no, I already ruled nostalgia out, because most of my favourite soundtracks are from games I never had. You may have seen my link above, where I've been remaking 8-bit tunes. With only 3 channels, the music that came out of those games....
If it was geared towards sound we'd be randomly throwing beeps and noise channel blurps at no given tempo or beat, so no, not really. What I'm talking is about pushing the hardware to synths and the such, yet still using it to compose smart music. Sure, 70% chiptune attempters suck ass, but you're looking in the wrong places.
What had 3 channels? Everything I've used has 4, counting noise.
