What would be cool is if we added an incentive to not just compete against the musician you're facing in a round, but also against everyone where the person with the highest score in that round faces the winner with the lowest score in the next bracket. This would add an incentive to not have the lowest score of the winners but rather to try for the highest score--to reward the person that did the best by making their chances easier to advance when pitted against someone with the lowest score of the last round. Makes things a little more interesting wouldn't you say?

Response to: Favorite NG musicians...? Posted June 21st, 2014 in Audio

@Breed -- This is the guy that opened my eyes to the many possibilities one could take as an artist. He alone told me about this place. Even before I decided to finally start an account, I would come here through his page solely for the music and listen to a lot of tracks. Much respect. I doubt he even knows this alias :) ha

PeterSatera, along with TheBenjerman, are the first writers that I listened to before I even joined. I was oblivious to many others at the time. But their music also compelled me to finally make the decision to become some small part of this community.

TheHeartGrinder writes pieces that I truly adore and I am glad to have come to know him as a friend. Anchorwind is another one of those guys that just writes and you can hear the passion he has for his craft.
Every person I follow has inspired me tremendously whether I have vocalized it to them or not:
Brightershadow, Broove, Soundchris, Emid, Bosa, Samulis, Elitistinen, Chemiqals, floppypawss, Step, Echo, Damien, Jaysummers, Kor-Rhune, Basset, JacobCadmus, Zajed, Johnfn, OmegaP, Mattashi, tiger888, Sourjovis, KingBastard, ForgottenDawn, LunyAlex, yagru, Aeris, JosephAS1, Insanctuary, JesseNewkirk, newhanson, Qiz, Reasoner, Veneox, Rahmemhotep, IglicaV, now hitokirito, Triosnyx, ComposerDylan, MarkySpark, etc... Must I list them all?
And I know this is supposed to be about your favorite NG musician, but I'm simply not going to do that, because I don't even love myself arrogantly enough to the point that I would put myself above another in comparison. Everyone I mentioned has something to give that I truly enjoy and have enjoyed in the past.

I still have to continue listening, and I'm sure finding great musicians here won't cease. I think it is good to encourage one another like this, but my primary purpose in me saying this isn't just that.
I want to reiterate that your enjoyment and purpose in creating music should NOT be contingent upon encouragement, flattery, or the lack thereof.
And the reason I mentioned how I even got here in the first place was to show that you may never know who is listening. Trust in the fact that even though you might not get a review, that there is someone that has truly enjoyed what you have written. As for another example, I remember reading a student's poem that was published in a small literary book at college and being touched by it, thinking how this poet will never know how much time I spent in my thoughts dwelling on these words. Stop moping and perceiving things in a cynical way.

Oh, and I'll also just say that going to the Easy Listening section and typing in "sad" in the Filter box will give you somewhat a direction of pieces. Go exploring. Anything worthwhile will be worth taking the time to find them.

Response to: Looking for a sad Theme Posted June 3rd, 2014 in Audio

"Sad" is almost as subjective as "good," so I'll just throw out there a couple artists that I feel have a more more somber approach to their music while being relatively simple.

(the above artist's 2012 submissions and "Thinking" is what I would put in the category of "sad."

Just what I mean by subjective, "The Mystic Cave" is probably the only tack I would consider closer to feeling "sad" as the other two are more awe-inspiring IMO.

Response to: Skill vs presets. What do you use? Posted June 1st, 2014 in Audio

Since a lot of ppl have already put in their two cents, I'll just say that I tend to primarily concentrate on the composition aspect of the piece and so when I need a synth, I prefer to tweak from presets for the sake of time. If I utilize synths in a piece, I'm not going to just have one, so having a synth created from scratch perhaps won't be that necessary for me if I were to fear familiarity.

You're not going to write great "beats" overnight. I'd say it takes most people years to learn what is good. You might want to be a bit more specific in what questions you might have or what it is exactly you're looking for so people can help you. I don't have FL Studio so I can't offer any advice on the workarounds of it.

Interesting read.
So are you an animator or composer?
You probably could be a decent writer.

Anyway, FL is not only for loops.
I got the feeling that you expected making music would be easy once you got FL.

Response to: Making memorable tunes? Posted May 26th, 2014 in Audio

At 5/26/14 09:36 PM, samulis wrote: I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I've realized that a memorable melody is something you can sing.

Melodies that are especially catchy are simple, often containing arpeggios or leaps to chord tones, sometimes tensions. For an older feel, one can use scales to connect the chord tones, but most modern music shies away from scales and instead uses leaps more.

If you sing or play an instrument, try coming up with a melody doing that... even humming or whistling too.

Yes good input. I think about the piano works of Chopin where his melodies are often inspired by the voice and the opera singers of the day.

@Elitistinen I wasn’t going to reply back initially because he’s being a cryptic and unclear with what he wants. He gave a youtube link of an example, which by the way sounds pretty mediocre IMO.

That kind of music I'm looking for in that scenario, something not too misterious but more straight forward with the scariness, Play the last stand 2 and listen to the music in it so see where I'm coming from, really I insist.

The links I provided are varied in styles to give you more of an idea of the route you might like to take but are more than sufficient enough for representing, as you put it, “creepy” and “scary.”
The scenario you gave isn’t a good description in music terms of why you have not found what you are looking for yet.
I’m sorry but I don’t have the time so play last stand 2 and find what for you what you’re looking for. Perhaps you can pay someone. Never even heard of the game to be honest. Also, if the music from last stand 2 is any worth, you should find some more information about the composer and where you can locate more of it via the internet.

Mingle with the community a bit, spark some interests and you will get scouted. Personally I've heard much worse submissions in the audio portal so I wouldn't take the criticisms personally as everyone has their own tastes in style.

Response to: i have a question on some audio... Posted April 28th, 2014 in Audio

Video game music that’s not realistic sounding as in low quality? You want 8 bit? When I read “video game music” upbeat is what I usually think of which is different than what you originally asked. Or are you talking about the repetitiveness with a lot less substance like in the link/reference that you attached here previously?
If you’re still stuck on wanting exactly the music that you referred to, then just Google online and convert the video to just an audio file. Not that hard to do and that is what you want anyway.
