Topic: The 'Layout's good, but...' Thread

cellardoor6, I think a lot of those "slow" issues are just 'cause there's a lot of traffic on the server today because the site just came out. However, one slow thing that really annoys me is that for some reason when I type these messages, the letters don't appear right away. This happened in the previous site too, though, so I guess it's not quite relvant to this particular thread. btw, does anyone else have this same problem?

Anyway, yeah, as for a relevant contribution to this thread topic, I like pretty much everything except for the fact that the link to "Dating Sims" that was on the old "Games" page is not there anymore, so now if you want to see the dating sims collection, you have to go the long way, through the "Mature" link, at least as far as I know. This kind of sucks for me in particular since dating sims are kind of my speciality. This is also not good for the reason that non-adult dating sims have started to become popular, which means that even if you aren't an adult, you have to go into an adult section in order to play certain non-adult games, unless you use the search engine instead.

I guess that's what I get for actually reading the Help/FAQ. It still says 5mb there. w/e, I guess this thread still contains interesting issues to ponder if anyones interested, but anyways, thanks for letting me know about the 10mb thing.

Batting average is A+. So it is their reward. :)

But it's not entirely about reward, it's about the evolving tendencies within newgrounds, and what might be done, if even necessary, to adapt in response. It's also about integrity, I mean, should someone stick to the rules that have been set, or just do what everyone else is doing? I'm really not sure about this. And how does this affect one's own artistic vision? Will these quality flash games that require more complexity eventually evolve into larger and larger projects that will someday be only viewed as quality if the only feasible way to approach it is through commercial/professional commitment, as it has for console and mainstream PC games? Or will we eventually sacrifice efficient structure and programming for cheap craftsmanship and a flood of features (kind of like windows), because we know it will sell? And at what point does the exception to the 5mb rule nullify the rule itself?

Honestly, I don't see why you even give a fuck. If you're so tired of cliches, why don't you do something about it instead of trying to change everyone? Why don't you just post original threads and topics, and do that yourself? Expecting anyone, in the country, the world, nay, the universe to care about anything you say or change just because you tell them to is just plain naive.

Do what I do, ignore the dumb topics or posts, look for interesting, promising ones, and offer to the topic. It's got to be alot better than bitching and complaining about something no one will even care about.

Well, as for no one caring: this is a messageboard with a large audience, and there are sure to be others out there who will respond to a sincere thread post such as this one. Furthermore, the argument of no one caring is itself becoming cliche, being used without much thought as a flame on many unique threads. So just because a topic is obscure, doesn't mean no one cares about it, and just because there is a negative tone to the topic doesn't make the poster a crybaby or naive or an inactive complainer, in fact if he's posting a new, sincere thread, chances are it is somewhat an attempt at being proactive about what he's complaining about, as it will attract like-minded people for unity against the issue, and inform noobs of a not-as-immediate perspective on the issue.

What's with all the larger games these days being over 5mb? I thought there was a limit on NG, and I work very hard to make my games fit that limit, while others seem to disregard it completely without any trouble. Is this rule outdated and/or no longer in effect? Do we still need to directly e-mail Tom the games over 5mb for review and manual posting? Seriously, it's like it's no longer a rule. Anyway, I just felt like ranting, and seeing what others think about the situation.

speaking of NG layouts, I was wondering if there was a place that showed all the different layouts of NG over the years, and during special occasions, like Pico days and stuff. If no one's started a thread or page like that yet, maybe this would be a good place to start it. Thanks in advance

Hi Vortex!
Great job on all the pics! You really pounded them out quickly, which is definitely a plus. Thanks for the offer, and I'm definitely impressed.

I really like Sandcastle's art a lot, but it doesn't seem like she can complete the works as promptly as you can, though I certainly understand that such high quality work is very time consuming, and I appreciate her efforts.

So, this contest is officially over, and Vortex wins. Congratulations!

I'll PM you all the info you need pretty soon.

And thanks again to everyone who participated. You guys are awesome!

Hi everyone, and sorry for the double post. I just need to give an update on the current situation for the project.
Ok, well, the original plan for this project was for me to do some sketches and do all original art for this sim, but recently, I've come across some artwork online that was much better than I could ever have time to achieve, and it's exactly what I was going to do anyway. So I hesitatingly decided that I will go with as much of it as possible.
The up side is that most of it is in ink, which means that it still needs to be colored, and it will be an easier job to color.
The "downside" is that it won't be my original art; it will be professional art which I will modify to fit the project.
I will likely still include some of my sketches and things if need be, but basically for whoever takes this job as a colorer, I hope you don't mind coloring some, well, manga work instead of original work. If this bothers you at all, my apologies for not being straight with you from the start, but this is an ongoing project, and I want it to be as high quality as possible, which can be achieved, in my opinion, by taking this route.
Of course, full credit will be given to whoever deserves it, so don't feel like I'm stealing anything here. And pretty much all the backgrounds will be original work, though mostly done on the PC, so it'll be easier to color too.
Thank you,
-Overdrawn

Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing it. Thanks for your interest. There are certainly other candidates, but yes, this offer is still open.

And I know it's cliche, but I loved you game, played all the endings^^.

I tried to post a comment in your comment box in the blog, but it just went to a blank screen, so I'll post it here instead:

Great article. You made some really good points, and of course it was entertaining too! Plus it's about you-know-whats; a man just can't ask for more. But seriously, I like how it really defends the natural woman, and helps to liberate people from mainstream brainwashing and unrealistic ideals. I learned some valuable things here. Thanks for writing this.

*And by the way, I also remember reading somewhere that the art forum was supposed to be for complete works only.

Well, I understand what you mean, but I've read quite a bit of stuff in the art forum, and a lot of the moderators seem to be of the opinion that the art forum was originally intended for finished, high quality art, and not for unfinished, random stuff. (I think I read somewhere that if you don't think it's high enough quality to be sellable, don't start a thread with it, or something like that). Anyway, I kind of respect that idea, and besides, I usually like to stay on the safe side, so I posted it here, where most people post requests for help with their flash projects, which is basically what I'm doing.

Hi, it's me again, sorry about the multiple posts, but I just need to clear a few common misconceptions up.
First of all, I am looking preferably for computer-colored style (not sketchy), unless you're exceptionally good at something else, such as airbrush. Also, since this is obviously a big job, please realize that I will be working with you to help out if you need it.
And if you are considering offering to help, please post the colored versions of all three sample pics, as they each have different coloring elements in them which are necessary for the job. For example, the one with the windblown dress will require shading for the wavy dress, the second one will demonstrate your proficiency with skin tones, and the third will show how you color the eyes, among other things. Submitting these particular pics also ensures that it's your original work, and not something you got off the internet.

And one more thing: I forgot to say thank you to everyone for taking the time to read this and participate. I really appreciate your interest, and am looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi everyone,
You may know me from the previous dating sim I made, Twinkle Revue Sim Date 2. Well, I'm taking a go at dating sims again, and I need help. This time around, I wanted to do all-original/freehand-copied art. The only thing is, the way things are right now, I need to finish it by September '07, and I won't make the deadline unless I get someone to color my sketches for me, so I will post a few sample sketches here, and if anyone's interested in helping me out, please color them and post them here for me to check. There are a few guidelines to follow, though:

-First of all, my stupid scanner broke :(, so these sample pics are going to look like crap, so if you want to help me out, I hope you don't mind working with pics of this quality. It depends on your coloring method whether this will be a factor or not.

-Secondly, backgrounds are not neccessary for these sample pics. Just the figures. I will sketch whatever you need to color, so don't worry about that.

-Also, there are things in the pics I left out on purpose, such as the pupils, which I think can be done better in the coloring stage instead of the sketching phase.

-Please realize that for dating sims, there are lots of pics to deal with. My last game had over 100 graphics, large and small (backgrounds, items, people, etc.). Of course, I'll try to share the load, but if you don't think you can go the distance, this job's not for you.

-Please color all the pics I'm posting. I'm looking for consistency as well as quality.

-And lastly, I can do a decent job myself; I just need an extra hand so I have time and energy for other parts of the game, and of course for RL, so if you don't have decent coloring skills, I probably won't select you. Please keep in mind that the quality of a good hentai pic greatly depends on how well it is colored, and though only about 15% of the pics will probably be of the hentai nature, quality is still paramount.

Ok, I think that's enough info for now, so here's the first pic below. And by the way, these are just sample pics. They won't be in the game. You will get more details about the game if you are selected.

P.S. This board only allows me to post small versions of the sketches, if you want larger ones, I will post some links to larger versions within a few minutes of posting the pics here.

*Slaps forehead* I forgot all about compound bow structures! In that case, it makes it much easier to have a shorter bow with the same amount of power.

This is in reply to the following question:

:Is it possible to use arrows longer than the height of the bow?

Yes, but keep in mind that when you increase the mass of the arrow, you generally want to increase the length of the arrow so it will fly straight (have enough drag at the tail), and pretty much the lighter the arrow, the farther it will go (easier acceleration). Of course, there has to be some momentum (mass as well as velocity) in order to provide a killer strike (not to mention a guard against wind resistance), so instead of decreasing your weight too much (where's the coolness in that?) you either have to increase the stiffness of the bow, or the length of the bow (as a greater length will give you more room to pull back, and consequently more distance to accelerate). But we've already ruled out the option of increasing the bow length, so that just leaves us with stuffness. So, if the bow is made from some really stiff material (high spring constant), and your chick is super strong, and the arrow itself is pretty stiff (you don't want it wobbling on the release) and properly balanced, yeah, I suppose you could have an arrow longer than the bow (as for the question of whether it will tip down when you release it because of too much weight forward of the fulcrum, this doesn't happen too much because the arrow actually clips onto the bowstring, and you usually tip it upward a bit anyway, and arrows are usually designed to be balanced correctly).

Ok, I double checked all the topics to make sure this is a unique one, and I was just wondering, is there a place that shows what all the rewards are and what they look like? I'm talking about, like the "More than 100k views" and stuff like that you get on the flash submission when you view it. The FAQ only talks about daily/weekly/etc first/second/etc place, and doesn't list all the awards (e.g. "More than 100k views"). I just submitted my first flash game, and I'm so nervous, I'm starting to obsess over newgrouds. Anyway, thanks in advance!
