but it's too complicated...

Was it something like using an emulator? That's the way I know, I really want to do that, but my PC can't handle a combination of an emulator and garageband at the same time.

Heck, it could hardly handle either one.

Topic: Anybody need help with GML?

Posted: 06/30/08 01:46 AM

Forum: Programming

Thanks for your willingness, but the people who use Game Maker compose a small niche in the world of game creation. Most of the inhabitants of this forum, and it's perusers as well, are not interested, or even are uninterested, in using Game Maker. Many programmers consider GM a "cheating" way to create games, as well as lacking power to create quality products.
In a similar manner, only juxtaposed to a different concept, game creators will seek other alternatives to create games, namely Flash for online games, and C++, etc, to create 'standard' games.
This is not to say that GM is useless or that your knowledge is so either, I am merely attempting to make you aware that the chance that your skills will be needed here is slim, and likely the majority of the reactions you receive in this forum will be negative, even pejorative.
In fact, I am a great supporter of GM, and use it all the time, though I have yet to turn out something worth making a final product out of, but I personally believe that to be a matter of time (and effort).

To start, though the graphics aren't that bad, the colors clash. The game has too much repetition, and not much is happening. Add a variety of ships, better color scheming, and cool effects, and you'll have one heck of a game.
Basic engine seems all right, aside for the obvious bullet problem.

I'm telling you try Adobe Fireworks CS3, that program actually makes it transparent.
Actually, I could do it for you if you want.
that would help loads (btw, it's 2 pics, not just 1, here they are)

Ooh, I misunderstood what you wanted. Doing that is very simple in the GIMP. Just select the layer in the layers tab and lower the transparency.

Check here, it's a bunch of download options, I believe one of them does work on 98.
works a treat! thanx!
one question, how do you open a graphic, alter it to be transparent then resave it? GIMP is a bit hard to work with...

No problemo! Yeah, GIMP can be a bit confuddling at times, especially when you're first starting. Once the GIMP has started, go to File > Open. You should be able to figure out how to get your file from there, basically just follow the dialog. Then, (you might not need to do this, but it won't hurt), on the image window, go to Layer > Transparency > Add alpha channel.
Then, select the magic wand selector in the main window (The GIMP), and use it to select any parts of the image you want to get rid of. This is easiest when the parts you are getting rid of are simple colors. You might need to fiddle around with the threshold setting down near the bottom of the window, depending on what you are doing. Alternatively, you can use the scissor select tool to make dots on a path that you want to get rid of (click around the path you want to create, then click back where you started, then click in the middle).
Once you've gotten rid of anything you that needs to go, you'll need to save the file as something that supports transparency, like PNG.
Go to File > Save As(image window). A message might pop up saying something like, "BMP can't handle transparency". Just click on export. It'll bring up another dialog. Type in the filename you want and then, type ".png" after it, without the quotes. If you want, you could instead click where it says "select file type by extension", then scroll down until you see PNG. Select that. Then, just click save!
That should work, if it doesn't, let me know.

I went and signed up but I cant find anything.

If you've signed up, then go to the main page. Log in, and click on Rankz (left hand side of page). Click on New Highscore Table. Then go to the list of tables, click on yours. Go to the bottom of the page, and click Get Actionscript Codes. What you need is there. This tutorial should help you through the process.
