If you want to write something in a specific genre but when you try it keeps turning out too similar, then try listening to a song in that genre that does it in a different way. Then try to pick out one (or multiple) things you like from it and try to do something in the same style (and if that comes out the same as before, try just directly copying it).
Then from there, build a new song on top of these ideas. It'll help you think about that genre in a different way, and you'll hear different things, because you won't be limited to your usual "starter" ideas.
ELO did this a lot with Beatles songs. They'd take a bar or two from a Beatles song, but then make a new song out of it. Listen to the bridge in "Day in the Life" by the Beatles and compare it to the beginning of "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO. (And IIRC, the Beatles did the same from other songs too).
Don't be afraid you're "stealing". As long as you are adding lots of new ideas to it, and taking it in a bit of a different direction, then it's a great way to get inspiration.
