The brackets are also updated here: http://nata.munchymedia.com/
The Masters Round will be posted tonight!
Entries are uploading and judging notifications have been sent out. We received entries from all 16 entrants, so kudos to all of you!!
(For JerrodStorm I used one of the "scenes" from his posted zip file)
Tom Fulp has brought it to my attention that the power outage is likely affecting quite a few people, a few animators included.
Stand by for adjustments.
Intermediate Round is closed!!
Oh, and two days remaining!

At 6/11/12 03:03 PM, Luwano wrote: How did you decide who is paired against each other? Random? Based on the points of the previous round? Or a combination of both?
It was based on open round scoring. The top 32 were ordered from best to worst and split into two groups, the top 16 scores and the low 16 scores. The first of each group was paired, then the second of each group was paired, and so on. ie. #1 vs. #17, #2 vs. #18, #3 vs. #19, etc. etc. It worked out pretty well, I'd say.
Also, I made sure to rotate these placements around the actual brackets. 1 vs. 17 was placed on the upper left, while 2 vs. 18 was placed in the lower right to be as far as possible from the other high scorers. The next two matches are placed in the lower left and upper right, and then it returns to the upper left with matchup of 5 vs. 21, but still remaining as far as possible from 1 vs. 17 in that corner.
At 6/11/12 01:25 AM, ExtremeFudgeMaster wrote: It seems that structure is consistently the lowest score. I understand the ABC thing, but how can everybody be doing so badly on structure? What are the judges looking for in structure?
Every entry is different and many scored lower in Structure than other categories for various reasons. If you have a specific entry in mind, we can help point it out to you. However, the primary reasons for structure being marked down are
A) Incompletion. This is the category where an incomplete entry will hurt you most. or,
B) Abrupt / unresolved ending. Keep in mind that a chaotic ending is fine, but there were some entries that never got to the main point at all.
Emrox had a fantastic entry, but all we get is a description of a really badass elephant assassin. Who was the rabbit at the beginning? Why does he want the dog dead? Who is the dog? What happens to him? Does he get killed? Does he run away? This story literally never goes anywhere, and so he was marked down for structure for this reason.
Other entries (such as Fungasm's entry) have a good establishment but then because it is incomplete (and without a storyboard, to boot), we have no idea where the story goes. What happens after the elephant comes out of the head and pulls the boy's spirit out? It never resolves in any way.
TL;DR: Structure is all about the story. Establish a premise, create a conflict or situation, and resolve it. Many entries failed to resolve due to incompletion or an abrupt ending. Other entries (such as LazyModeComics) never had a premise to begin with.
I will see if Thor can write up a helpful article on structure for everyone. It's a category that is not exclusive to animation, but to any form of motion media (film, video games, television, some comics, etc.)
Also below are the total statistics of everyone's combined scores in each category.
At 6/11/12 12:02 AM, Travis wrote: I feel like SymphyBunny's scores for BPremo's flash were very unreasonable. I'd like to know a detailed explanation on that because I thought Bill had one of the best entries BY FAR.
We have multiple judges in order to get a diverse range of opinions and scores. If they were all the same, I would be concerned. I am sorry that BPremo did not score as high as you would have liked him to. (However, he won the round regardless, so I don't see a contestable issue to be resolved in this situation)
If BPremo would like an extended explanation, I will see what I can do to acquire one. Are you a friend of theirs?
Also I disagree. I thought BPremo had a great entry in terms of art and animation, but had flaws in the other categories, so I think the scores are justified, personally. (The Entertainment category in particular is an entirely subjective field that will vary in every person who sees it)
@ Rocinante - There are a lot of inconsistencies in that (eg. NitWitt's super low score in structure, Tom & Nitwitt high scores with Dave and Symphy low scores in Entertainment, and Symphy's low score in animation)?
Every judge has justification for their scores. Thinking back, I would now change my score in Animation for Catoblepas to be lower because it is a lot of tweening with the only actual animation being on the boobs/ass and the chewing guy's mouth. It probably doesn't deserve a 5.

You will each be awarded $25 in addition to your previous prize for the open round. There were some excellent entries this time around, and some entrants that I am very sad to see go. I have never seen so many good animators with so much potential in any of these tournaments, which makes it hard to decide who stays and who goes.
The detailed results can be viewed on the Novice Round page, and the brackets are viewable on the NATA home page.
Intermediate Round coming soon...
Just finishing up formatting and placements.
I'll let you know when I'm almost done with re-calculating.
At 6/10/12 10:12 PM, Emrox wrote: Get ready for a shit tonna decimals.
Yeah, it's going to be up to 5 decimals for some figures. Cowan is no longer going to be judging for the contest.
Because the final judge never submitted their scores (Elliot Cowan), and to keep the score total out of 100, I will be using the following formula to convert all existing scores to be out of 5 instead of 4:
(Score / 4 ) x 5
4:30 here.
I'm having doubts that our last judge will get their scores in at all.
Well that didn't work.
Currently compiling all current scores and comments. Comments have been made by most judges but may not be posted until after the results and following round have been posted.
Still waiting on the last judge.

As in the past, we will make all scores out of 80 instead of 100 if the final judge does not deliver.
Also, ragnarok.
We are still waiting on the final judge to submit scores. Deadline for judging is 10:00 PM Eastern Time, which is 9 hours from now.
