Let's make one thing clear -- I am not NewGrounds. I am not employed by NewGrounds. I make no money from merchandise, ads, or any other means related to NewGrounds.
I have been running this contest by myself for the past 6 years. I have poured countless hours into making everything happen, and have put in hundreds of dollars from out of my own pocket for prizes in the past. It has gotten to the point where I spend so much time on it, I am actually losing time I could be using to do things that would actually pay my bills (which, by the way, I can't). I asked Tom in advance if it was possible for a small portion of compensation for my time would be a good idea from donations, and he said it sounded fair. It's written on the IndieGoGo page as to be transparent about where your money goes.

I'm the one who makes and updates the NATA site. I'm the one who is going to be making, paying for and shipping all of the perks (calendars, shirts, posters, DVDs, etc). I am a judge and also post all of the entries and scores on the website, including calculated averages. I'm the one who contacts Adobe to secure a sponsorship from them. I wrote and voiced the fundraising video (Emrox volunteered to animate it because he's awesome). I put together the IndieGoGo and all of its perks. People who would do all of this for professional contests probably get paid thousands of dollars - I'd hardly say this is in any way comparable.

I literally get NO BENEFIT from this contest whatsoever. Many who have won this contest have gone on to get successful carreers (see: Dave Bruno)-- I have not. People who enter and progress in the tournament get prizes -- I do not.

So, I don't understand what your problem is. If enough people come forward with this concern, however, then I will not take any compensation for everything I do, and this will be the last year that this contest happens. Because quite frankly, I can't afford it.

Where did you get $40? We haven't even finished raising funds, so there is no final number yet. If we raise $2,000, then $200 (10%) will be reserved for that, and that will be divided differently. I personally put many, many hours into organizing this contest, and so most of that will be helping to cover that. I pre-approved this with Tom, he and the NATA chat on Skype agree. The other 4 judges will get a smaller amount.

Even so, $40 isn't much payment to have someone spend hours sitting through 32+ entries, scoring them and leaving comments for them over the course of several months. It's a dedication and I wouldn't say that $40 is a lot to warrant for that.

I feel like everyone involved and that puts work into contest deserve something for their time, and showing the judges my thanks for their help is something I have always wanted to do, even if it's a low percentage divided among 5 of them. As the contest grows larger, I feel like it's deserved even more. Smaller flash contests don't pay their judges, but when you become something as large as this, you pass that threshold. I'm sure that the judges on American Idol make more in a week than any of us will make in our lifetimes, haha.

Update: We are now past the halfway mark! NMEA has graciously donated $500!
I also contacted a trophy making company today about the possibility. Keep em coming and we can make that happen. Tell your friends, family, coworkers, anyone!

NATA 2013 is coming soon and we want to make it bigger than ever!
The website is now live at http://nata.munchymedia.com/
You can view rules, about, previous, and calendar information there

Many of you have already heard, but we're doing an IndieGoGo fundraiser to make the contest more awesome than ever!
http://www.indiegogo.com/nata/
For pledging, you can get anything from a poster to being a judge as a perk! If we raise enough, we can make an ACTUAL TROPHY to give to the winner! How cool is that?

Also in this thread:
- Specific animators you'd like to see in the tournament (I'll be sending out invites)
- Predictions / Speculation
- General pre-NATA chat

Wouldn't it be best to have EVERYONE animate every round? That way, the most points at the end total wins. More content and more of a challenge if you have everyone against each other every round.

This has been suggested before, and while it would make for a good contest, it wouldn't be a bracketed tournament any longer. One of the major draws of NATA is to see "who is better than who" when compared side by side. It's one of the reasons people enjoy the playoffs in major sports so much - guessing and seeing who beats who in each round. :)

Yes, the lengthy 6-round structure last year was far too much for animators. By the time the finalists got to the final round, they were burned out.

Good to see we have a couple donors already, keep them coming! I think we could probably do the badge for the $5 donation. I'll see what Tom thinks.

The animation is by Emrox. The writing and voicing is by myself.

Nata Calendar & Planning 2013! Posted December 18th, 2012 in Animation

There's now a 2013 NATA themed calendar for sale!
http://www.cafepress.com/munchymedia.753049014

It includes screenshots from 2 animators from every single year back to 2007.

Also, there is a bit of planning going on for NATA 2013. Perhaps there will be an IndieGoGo fundraiser...! I do know that it will be a couple rounds/months shorter and will involve more forum participation. Any suggestions are also welcome here.

- N A T A - 2012 Champion!!! Posted October 14th, 2012 in Animation

The entries are complete, the scores are in. After 6 months of animators competing for the next spot, the first NewGrounds Annual Tournament of Animation is at last coming to a close. (Don't worry, next year will be shorter)

You have all done extremely well. We had an amazing turnout and some absolutely fantastic entries throughout the entire tournament, so well done to everyone who entered. Listed after the champion are the final prize amounts.

It is now my pleasure to announce the Champion of Animation for NATA 2012.

Without further ado, the Champion of Animation for NATA 2012 is...

New general spacing below. Like I said, extremely flexible, this is just a general idea.
Preffered format: 1200 x 900 (or somewhere around that), PNG with no background, transparent PNG is best. Try to include entire character with no "cutoffs"

We're making a compilation for a calendar page for the 2013 NG Calendar contest!

Please draw a Character from one of your NATA entries, and send it to me at adam@munchymedia.com

I will compile it into your designated "space" as shown below. The area is flexible, so as long as you make it around the same proportions it should be fine.
