Sorry to hear about that, CatCalledFish - I would really appreciate absolutely anything that you can submit. If nothing else, I will put in your WIP from this thread.

Can artists work together? Can the artist in the contest get ideas from others if they themselves do all the animating, or do the competing artists have to do everything themselves?
Animators cannot work in teams. You can, however, get aid in the form of music, writing, voice acting, etc. If you DO enlist someone's help, you need to agree ahead of time how you will divide any prize money won. All animation and drawing must be completed by the entrant.
At 5/7/13 12:45 PM, bolisa wrote: Wait, Nata, you said that the results will come in the pro rounds!
so why now?
I did, but made a last-minute change. I figured that 32 people using the music would be much better exposure than 8 in the pro round. :)
Don't forget to credit the music author in your entry!!
At 5/5/13 07:21 PM, BudMadeMeWiser wrote: Should the music be the center of the submission, or does the submission just have to include one of the pieces?
Also, do we have to use the whole song?
It's flexible - You don't have to use the entire song, but don't use a tiny snippet either. The song should probably play a large role in the piece -- though as long as you interpret the mood effectively, that's what's most important.
At 5/6/13 04:14 PM, urbfilms wrote: Am I aloud to animate to this theme except just not put the tag nata2013novice on my piece, because I have an idea for this theme. :)
As previously said, yes, go for it! You just won't be part of the judging.
At 5/6/13 03:49 PM, CroMagg wrote: I see that each song has a mood that has been pre-desyphered (sad, anger, revenge, and scary) Am I animating something using those themes or is it my interpretation of the songs what I'm animating?
For example, if I heard the "angry" themed song and feel a more uplifting/happy tone from it, can I animate a happy feeling animation versus an angry one? Or maybe using the "revenge" theme for a comedy?
Yes and yes! I personally interpreted the Adventure song as more uplifting, but different interpretations and spins are encouraged and may help your Originality score. :)
A couple quick reminders: Be sure to follow NATA's Tumblr, Youtube, and Facebook pages!
Also, we've had no orders for shirts or T-shirts, so those are still available on the main NATA site.
Also, we are always accepting more participants of NATA into the Skype chat. Just post your Skype name here and someone will add you!
Best of luck to all involved!
At 5/5/13 07:27 PM, CzySzy wrote: Can I somehow modify any of the given songs, ex. add drums, strings, bras, panties, etc?
Yes. We did this same theme a few years back (2008) and LazyMuffin remixed one of the songs to include his own additions.

* All entries must include the Nooni Media logo in their loading screen, title sequence, or credit roll. Note: You don't have to make it super huge or say "Nooni Media Presents" -- This makes it look like the animation was created by them. Instead, say "Sponsored by Nooni Media"
* Entries must fit the theme above to both level the playing field and ensure that entries were not previously created.
* The animation must be no shorter than 1 Minute and no longer than 10 Minutes.
* The animation must be submitted on NewGrounds in any video or flash format, so long as it can be considered animation. 3D, flash, traditional, and stop-motion are all acceptable formats.
* Excess nudity, profanity, and other things of profane nature are not allowed. (It cannot have a "Mature" rating.)
* Absolutely NO copyright material is allowed without permission. If you use copyrighted music or other material in your animation, you MUST get the permission of the original creator of that material.

* The Audio portal is a great source for music, just be sure to get permission to use it for this contest!

If you did not see your name, then your entry was not listed in the top 20 of any judge and therefore received 0. Again, this does not mean your entry was horrible, but that it simply wasn't in the top 20 from any judge.
@ artistuknown - The beginning of your entry was okay, but it quickly went into a sloppy animatic in which I could barely even tell what was happening. The concept of "Birth Day" was odd and I didn't see how it could be considered a new holiday and there wasn't much explanation behind it. I'm also fairly sure your entry also has copyright music.
@ ForNoReason - I put your entry as #20 on my list simply because it made me laugh like crazy. Aside from making clever jabs at the animation community, there is very little animation or artwork value, not to mention very little story. The idea was clever, and the jokes were funny, but that's really the only leg it had to stand on.
@ urbfilms - Your concept was good! The biggest weakness of this one was the pacing - it just went on for way too long. The sequence where he's trying to fly out of the bank drags on. The artwork and animation weren't terrible but can also use improvement. When it comes down to it, there were just a lot of highly experienced animators pumping out very high quality entries this year and many other decent ones got pushed out.
At 5/4/13 04:19 AM, brynimation wrote: Hi everyone! Congratulations to all of the people who got through! Can I just ask, are the people who didn't get in allowed to see a breakdown of their score. I just think it would be quite useful if I knew what I did wrong and what I did correctly. Thanks!
Bryn
There is no "breakdown" into categories for the Open Round, since its purpose is simply to select who will enter the tournament. I can offer some of my own pointers if you'd like, and if you contact some other judges they may be able to give their input as well.
@ Bryn - Your concept for Mythmas is a solid idea! However, the artwork needs improvement, while the animation was okay. This definitely wasn't a bad entry, but there are many highly advanced animators that entered this year to claim the top spots. Keep working at it and try again next year -- we've had many people come back to the contest every year with greater skills who progress further -- Emrox is one of them! He entered for 3 years before winning.
@ Grub517 - Your entry was better than some others, but has a lot of room for improvement as well. To start, the entry didn't fit the theme at all - it was just some people fighting in random sequences on an airship, and then harpooning birds. I saw no story or purpose to any of the actions. The animation itself was the strongest part, and the artwork was okay. The blending of 2D animation on top of the 3D ship was unique, but the 3D elements themselves were also the weakest part of the entry. I see a lot of room for potential, so keep at it and I hope to see you back next year too! :)

Nope!
At 5/3/13 11:50 PM, Angelejandro64 wrote: Even if we didn't make it, can we still make animations based on the theme and just not enter them into the tournament or would that get people confused?
You're free to continue making animations based on the themes, but they won't be judged in the contest. Some people may be confused, but hey there's no way I can stop you. :)
The results are in!! Firstly, a huge thank you to EVERYONE who participated, we had a record turnout this year and that's AWESOME!
Quick explanation of scoring: Each judge listed their top 20 entries in order from best to least-best. #1 on a list is given 20 points, #2 given 19 points, and so on until #20 gets 1 point. It is nearly impossible to get 100 points in the Open Round because of this, so don't be upset at your score!

We currently have 2/5 judges in.
At 4/30/13 02:01 AM, nixful-Autistic wrote: What are the criteria for judging?
For the Open Round, judges select their top 20 entries while keeping in mind elements of Art, Animation, Originality, Entertainment, and Structure. Entries on their lists are scored like so:
#1 on the list = 20 points
#2 on the list = 19 points
#3 on the list = 18 points
... and so on. This makes for 100 possible points, but divided much differently than later rounds.
We have an update from Bennett Awards! John, the designer of the NATA trophy, is actually a long-time NewGrounds fan, and donated to the IndieGoGo campaign -- he just received his shirt and sent in a photo! (Below) They have also informed me that the trophy will be complete in a week or so, and we'll have photos to show you all by then.
All entries are now up!!
http://nata.munchymedia.com/open/
Judging will be about a week or so. In the meantime, remember that NATA has a Tumblr that is updated frequently, and that T-Shirts and Posters are still available on the NATA site!
Friendly reminder *not* to auto-play your flash movie, or else it will have to go behind an ugly "click here" link instead of being on the Open Round page!
