That's how many the thread said the judges were choosing.
To get a better point pool, I put the judging number at 32, even with only 24 getting in.
I've considered the "points per round" thing before, but then it wouldn't be a tournament by definition at all. Might be fun for a separate contest? A "losers bracket" might be a good idea, though - I'll see what we can do next year.
Thanks to everyone for the fantastic entries - we were really blown away this year!!
The IndieGoGo ends TONIGHT!! If anyone wants some sweet perks while supporting NATA, now is the time!
Also, we have 3 judges' scores in - only 2 left! Once the scores are in, the results will be posted.
You can now view all accepted entries on the NATA site!
http://www.ngtournament.com/open/
The NG Collection is managed by Tom, and doesn't reflect which entries have been accepted or not - there were 74 entries so they were probably missed but will be added sure, I'm sure.
We have 2 judges' scores in! Waiting on 3 more...
Also, remember the IndieGoGo only goes for 2 more days! http://igg.me/at/ngtournament14 We are still $600 short of our fundraising last year, so keep spreading the word!
Coming soon on the NATA site: A shop! Keep your eyes peeled for that...

Sorry about that - I gotcha!
ryardo, since there were so many encoding issues around the site, I'll still accept yours. All late penalties will be much, much smaller than originally planned as well.
66 Entries!!
Not sure why it's not posted here, but JABToons got his up:

I agree, and have been accepting videos sent in ZIPs or over other mediums when the file has trouble processing or uploading to NG. It's probably because of all of the entrants trying to upload at the same time, maybe I'll talk to Tom about a possible solution for next round.

Here is my submission for the NATA2012 open tournament.
Video is still processing, but it is up on the preview link. Hope that is
still okay.
It's not showing up for me - hope you can get it worked out!
Also, I accidently listed Tenpouin twice on that list, so we're at 62 entries right now. If JABToons and
ryardo can get their entries worked out, then we'll be at 64! Remember, you only have until 5 AM Eastern Time! That's about 3 hours from this post.
Holy cow, we have 62 entries so far!
Here's a list of those we have, make sure your name is on here!

The Open Round is now CLOSED!
Any entries received from this moment on will be penalized or disqualified!
With 2.5 hours to go, we have 40 entries! How many will there be?
Best of luck in the final hours!
We are now up to 33 entries, which means that at least 9 people will unfortunately not place in the tournament.
5 Hours Remain...!
Looking good, everyone!
You can view an accurate real-time countdown here: http://timeanddate.com/s/2paj
9 Hours remain!
SpikeVallentine, please avoid multi-posting and just put all of your comments in one reply.
The judging system on Newgrounds allows for low-scoring animations to be "Blammed" (Deleted) from the site, so posting an unfinished flash will probably be removed.
We currently have 20 entries, which means we still have 4 spots to fill in the tournament! About 22 hours remain... Good luck!

Sorry for the delay - The winner is HowardWimshurst! He will receive the $20 prize.
Just over a week to go!
We've reached $1,100! Can we beat last year's $1700??
Also, today is the last day to submit a photo of yourself working on your NATA entry for a chance at $20!
Also, in case you missed it - we're doing a mini-contest! Post a photo of you working on your NATA entry and we'll pick one person to win $20! Contest ends... sometime in the next few days. :)
Below: HowardWimshurst!
At 5/8/14 02:41 PM, ChillyCheese wrote: Unfinished entries will still be considered? Is there a large penalty for unfinished work?
Yes, all entries are considered so long as they fall within the rules and aren't a blatant troll of the contest (Fedora King...)
There's no contest penalty for unfinished work, but it will definitely be reflected in your scores!!
Best of luck to all involved! Looking forward to seeing some awesome stuff.
Looking good, everyone!
As a side note: If your entry is unfinished, you can still upload it to the Dumping Grounds as long as you post a link in this thread!
2 Weeks & 2 Days remaining! Make sure to continue telling people about the IndieGoGo, it's really slowed down in the past few days!
Best of luck on your entries!
At 5/6/14 02:28 AM, zeedox wrote: The contest's limited to one animator per entry, but is it within the rules to collaborate with animators and do all the background art?
Thanks for asking to clarify - No, the entrant must create all visual assets themselves.
At 5/4/14 11:17 PM, artistunknown wrote: Something just crossed my mind: Are we allowed to use original characters that we've used in an animation before? I seem to remember TOFA having a rule against that and I don't think I've seen anything about it in the rules for NATA, so I was just wondering :3
You can use your own characters, so long as all the animation and content is fresh! Oye-LKY did this last year.
At 5/3/14 04:30 PM, nat29 wrote: Am I allowed to PM someone and request some custom music for my entry?
Yes, as long as they agree to it. Make sure you set an agreement on splitting any possible prizes!
Reminder: You CANNOT team up with another animator. This is a one-animator-per-entry contest
The IndieGoGo is up to $588! We raised $1,759 last year, can we beat it this year? Maybe we'll be able to get another awesome custom trophy if we keep it up. If you can, make a donation - otherwise, spread the word!!

Are you ready?
It's time to begin the Newgrounds Annual Tournament of Animation 2014! Starting today, animators from around the world will compete for the top 24 spots in the tournament, with bracketed matchups to eliminate all but one - the Champion of Animation 2014. Do you have what it takes to make it to the top?
See the Official NATA Website for more information!

*** Open Round ***
The Theme for the Open Round is...
.
***********************************
* The Most Important Mission Ever *
***********************************
.
.
.
*** Rules ***
*************
* You have until 11:59:59 PM, Eastern Standard Time, on Friday, May 23rd to complete your submissions. No submissions will be accepted after the deadline without penalty.
* Be sure to include the NATA '14 Logo in your entry preloader or credit screen.
* Newgrounds and Jaltoid are both major sponsors of this year's tournament, and so all entries must include the Newgrounds logo and the Jaltoid logo listed as a sponsor in their loading screen, title sequence, or credit roll.
* Entries must fit the theme above to both level the playing field and ensure that entries were not previously created.
* The animation must be no shorter than 1 Minute and no longer than 10 Minutes.
* The animation must be submitted on Newgrounds in any video or flash format, so long as it can be considered animation. 3D, flash, traditional, and stop-motion are all acceptable formats.
* Excess nudity, profanity, and other things of profane nature are not allowed. (It cannot have a "Mature" rating.)
* Absolutely NO copyright material is allowed without permission. If you use copyrighted music or other material in your animation, you MUST get the permission of the original creator of that material.
* If you would like to parody, then use similar names instead of the real names - ie. "Smears" instead of "Sears". No copyrighted material whatsoever.
* The Audio portal is a great source for music, just be sure to get permission and/or come to a winnings agreement to use it for this contest!
* Any entry in violation of these rules will be disqualified.

*** Judging ***
***************
Entries will be judged by the following judges:
* Tom Fulp - Founder of Newgrounds
* Hikarian - Champion of Animation, 2013
* Emrox - Champion of Animation, 2012
* HappyHarry - Newgrounds Animator Extraordinaire
* MindChamber - Newgrounds Animator Extraordinaire
Judging for the Open Round will be performed by each judge listing their top 24 animations in order of best to least-best. Entries placed higher on a judge's list will receive more points.
Example:
#1 entry on a judge's list -> 24 Points
#2 entry on a judge's list -> 23 Points
... and so on. Therefore, the highest total points that can be scored by one entrant in the Open Round is 120 Points, and it would only be possible for one person to get this score.
Those 24 animators will then enter the brackets. In each bracketed round, judging will be score-based on each entry.
.
.
.
*** Submissions ***
*******************
* Entries must be uploaded via the Newgrounds Portal.
* Entries must be tagged with "nata2014open" to distinguish them from other rounds and years.
* Entries must be submitted before the deadline. (See above)
* Be sure to post a link to your entry in this topic, to be sure your entry does not get lost.
.
.
.
*** Late Penalties ***
**********************
Open Round late penalties look like this for submissions after the deadline:
0 - 29 minutes: - 5 total points
30 - 59 minutes: - 10 total points
1 - 3 hours: - 15 total points
3 - 5 hours: - 20 total points
5+ hours: Disqualified
.

.
*** Prizes ***
**************
The top 24 scored entrants from the Open Round will each move on to the Novice Round brackets and receive a $20 prize for making it in. The IndieGoGo campaign will remain open until after the end of the Open Round, and so final prize amounts for all other rounds will not be announced until the completion of fundraising. All prizes will be awarded in September after the completion of the tournament.

.
*** Fine Print ***
******************
* By submitting an entry to NATA 2014, you agree to allow NATA and its organizers to use your material to promote the contest and use it for possible calendars and other merchandise.
* All entrants must have a paypal or the ability to receive a check in the mail in order to claim their prizes.
* The final Champion of Animation at the completion of the contest must create an illustrated image of themselves interacting with planet Earth, as is NATA tradition to document their victory with such an image on the NATA website.

Good Luck!!
