Response to: Preloader! PLEASE! Posted December 6th, 2002 in Game Development

If you want to make YOUR OWN preloader and don't like tutorials or already made up add-on preloaders, just use simple actionscript to make one. Stop the movie or order it to go in a continuous cycle of frames. Then, on one of the frames in the cycle or in the frame that stops, type this in the actions box (after "stop, or "goto" - after all the actionscript that is already there in the frame): "ifframeisloaded", and right after the line, before the statement ends, make it do something like play or go to another frame and play or stop. Make sure that the location does not lead back to repeat the cycle. Set the value of "ifframeloaded" to the last frame of your movie, or the frame you want the user to wait to be loaded. This is pretty simple stuff compared to other actionscript in FLASH.

Yeah, this is a pretty good thing too, to stop the jackasses from stealing movies from other sites and taking the credit for themselves. This gets really annoying, to see that on Newgrounds. If the users want the credit so much, they should take time to learn Flash, to see how hard it is to make a movie, and to think how the REAL authors feel when the excellent movie they've worked on for so long has been taken by someone else for his or her credit.

Response to: Searching for a flash maker Posted December 6th, 2002 in Game Development

O yeah... You don't have the FLASH PROGRAM, eh? Download Kazza if you don't have it, and search there - it's gotta be there - I got it off kazza, and many other people got it off there too. All you need to do is search for it - there's many packages that give you the flash application - some also include serial codes. Yeah, you can also join a flash team on the Internet, but you should still get the FLASH PROGRAM.

Response to: Look at this!!!! Posted December 6th, 2002 in Game Development

"Look at this!!!" is a pretty attractive topic name, but it should've been more specific, like "Add and Collect Actionscripts" or something, so the NewGrounds users know that when they come here, they're gonna find valuable things, instead of thinking that this topic is only about looking at dumb pics, and not stopping here.

I posted another message here, right now, just to keep the topic alive.

Response to: Look at this!!!! Posted December 6th, 2002 in Game Development

Good job guys, this is pure gold to many people... more FLASH PROS should join this BBS noteposting sessions! Wow, this might really come in handy to so many people... many n00bs for FLASH. Keep up the good work! I wish that I could help posting up actionscripts, but I memorized only the basics, and I can't find the flash file I had that has all the cool actionscripts I know!! DAMN.

Response to: Pico: bear in big house Posted December 6th, 2002 in Where is / How to?

It's easy... I donno how I couldn't get past it in the first time, but after a few tries, I got it. There should be a rat after you beat the weasels, throwing grenades at you - you shoot the grenades right when he throws them to avoid getting hit and to damage him. After you finish the bear off... (There should be enough ammo to bring his HP to 0... Yeah, go AUTO on the rifle, and then, when you defeat the bear in the entrance, he should run back inside the house, and then you get another ammo refill. In the inside room, shoot the barrels that fall down, and kill the enemies in the room. Go to the right room for a life refill (it could kill you too, so be cautious) - by shooting the lightbulb. Then go to the kitchen, and shoot the electrical appliances in the room... I forgot what appliances... I think a toaster, oven, or something... and that should destroy the ugly bear. Sorry if I'm mistaken in any of these tips - I played that old game a long time ago.

Response to: Cause your a dumbass cartoon? Posted December 5th, 2002 in Where is / How to?

Yeah, it's "Tribute to Animators" - the cartoon that used to be on the front page a while ago. The guy just pops up and calls the user a dumbass. Yeah, the user did do a stupid thing, if you noticed - he voted for the movie just to try to get a BLAM POINT for himself, without even viewing the movie. I hate people who do that, but overall, I think that the cartoon is kinda stupid... I mean, man, blammers are cleaning shit off newgrounds, and if something that's really good has been blammed by mistake - this should not happen, but hte user can re-submit. Anyway, people should NOT hesitate to blam a lot of movies if they want to, as long as they VIEW the movie, and truly think that it's crap, and not when they are trying to just get a BLAM point. BLAM the crap, and PROTECT the good - that's what voting is all about.

Response to: Preloader Posted December 5th, 2002 in Where is / How to?

Stop the movie while it's loading - don't put much for the viewer to view while loading, and make sure the loading sequence is not big on size. Make the loading sequence go in a continuous cycle, or stop it using the actions of frame(s). Then, make sure that one of the frames has "ifframeisloaded" actionscript line, and under that, put the action you want to happen when the movie is loaded. Finally, when you finish the movie, remember to set the "ifframeisloaded" frame value to the last frame of your flash. You can get nice tutorials around here too, or download preloaders that have already been made - you can search for them, if you want a good preloader.

Yo, I'm LEVEL 3 for EXP POINTS and already in the SAFETY PATROL for BLAMMING/SAVING. LoL.

When I got to be a member of the SAFETY PATROL, I had 50 SAVES and 50 BLAMS - I'm pretty reasonable in my voting - I do a lot of both, so I'm not sure if you need at least 50 of each to be a SAFETY PATROL member, or 100 BLAMS/SAVES combined (# of BLAMS + # of SAVES = 100 or more) to be a member. To get your BLAM and SAVE points fast (u prob already kno this), keep on refreshing the portal and vote on the new, or "under judgement" flash files.

PARTYTIME!!! WHERES DA FOOD!... LOL

I didn't throw on a party when I turned level 3 a while ago... I didn't feel so special. LoL this idea is funny... ah well...

(Am turning level two tmr... if I remember to vote 4 a few more movies - at least 5... I need 5 more points to reach level 4!!! but I'm not gonna make a big deal out of this, so forget it.)

Response to: Portal Rollovers Posted December 5th, 2002 in NG News

You're right, it DOESNT work on MACs, or at least some MACs. At home, on my PC, the roll-over feature worked, but here, at my school, on an iMAC computer, it doesn't work. Yeah, you should fix that, but its good that it works for the PCs, since most people use those to get onto NewGrounds.com.

The rollover box is the new feature on Newgrounds, where the user can roll his or her mouse over a portal entry, and see its score there, the author's ID, his / her rating, and the file size, without having to go to to the actual entry.

Response to: tom wont see this, but i dont care Posted December 5th, 2002 in General

E-mail Tom or something about this... can't you?
Theres should be a feature that allows you to enter your password on the contribution, check some box that says give credit to others, and get an E-mail sent to your friend, so he can log in by himself and enter his password, so there would be two or more authors for the movie. I don't think you can do anything right now to list two usernames for one movie though, without duplicating the movie and submitting it twice.

Response to: YAAAAAY!!! IT SNOWED!!!YAAAY!! Posted December 5th, 2002 in General

Damn, in Toronto it snows every winter, everyone freezes their asses off here when trying to go outside, and if we get a day off for every time it snows (it already did a few times), we'd have a Christmas vacation 3 months long. Damn this sux... at least u can go sledding, skiing, and snowboarding here...

Response to: BIG QUESTION ABOUT FLASH LOADERS. Posted December 5th, 2002 in Game Development

You either use actionscript to stop the movie (you can make the user view something or make it go in a continuous cycle of frames while it's loading, and use the "ifframeisloaded" command to make it play the movie by going to a certain frame when it's loaded. This is one of the basics of Flash. If you are still having trouble with it, get a preloader off someone or download it off the Internet - you just have to search and find it, it's pretty easy.

Response to: frames per second Posted December 4th, 2002 in Game Development

His FPS is faster than the default FPS rate (12 FPS) - that's for sure, but I donno what his fps is, and I am not gonna guess.

Response to: how do i make a flash movie Posted December 4th, 2002 in Game Development

Learn to draw and trace on FLASH, if you want to make a good video. It would look better if it was drawn on flash, and it would take up less memory too (you don't want a file that's too big, NG has a 5 megabit submitted flash file size limit)

Response to: Anti-N00b Crew Posted December 4th, 2002 in General

I hate the "n00bs" that try to send in 5 minute crap to newgrounds, so many times every day. Right now, I'm taking a very long time to make my flash video (not my first, but probably the first I'm gonna submit) - and I'm putting so much f*ckin effort into it (to see a preview go to
this
).

Response to: Flash MX Posted December 4th, 2002 in Game Development

Wow... with all these positive comments on MX, I should really get it and delete my flash 5! I've been working with flash 5 for such a long time. Does it include 3D animation features, or do you have to download your own separate 3D program like 3Dstudio max?

Response to: Fading Posted December 4th, 2002 in Game Development

Yeah, use the alpha tab. Just in case you didn't know, you have to convert the object you want to fade in or out to a button / movie clip / graphic, then right click the object and go to panels, and you'll find alpha there.

I was checking out one of my movies and it said something like "YOU CANNOT REVIEW THIS MOVIE, IT IS STILL UNDER JUDGEMENT"

Whats that all about?

Sorry... THIS IS MY LAST MESSAGE... LOL... I just want to answer this guy's question...

I'm not so sure, but I think that this is because movies that are under judgement may be blammed and every bit of data for it deleted, including the reviews, so if you write a review at that time, when the movie is blammed you lose your review and the time you took to write it.

Response to: Portal Updates... Posted December 3rd, 2002 in NG News

O yeah... Sorry to post multiple mesages - this is my third consecutive message - Just trying to be a good member of newgrounds and speaking up on ideas and suggestions to make this site better. You should really, someday, force the voters to view the movie first - so you have to view the movie or play the game to vote... some voters may just click on the voting bar when it's under judgement to try to earn a BLAM or PROTECTION point by guessing fast without even looking at the movie, therefore excellent movies still may be unreasonably trashed, while trashy movies may not get blammed and remain as a pile of shit on NewGround's server.

Response to: Portal Updates... Posted December 3rd, 2002 in NG News

You know, to have a better update, you can also make users vote on crappy movies again - movies with extremely low scores, or all movies that have been inactive for a while with not much votes and views should be shown in a window in the portal again to either get blammed, or saved again, just to double-delete garbage from Newgrounds.

Response to: Portal Updates... Posted December 3rd, 2002 in NG News

This update's better... now people won't vote with the crowd - so if the first person was dumb enough to try to blam an excellent movie, the rest won't go with him, and if another dumb person tries to save a total shit on flash, it still has its chances of dying. Yeah... this is good. The grades given to the authors are good too.

Response to: desperate for help... seriously Posted December 3rd, 2002 in Game Development

What kind of help... Do you want to make the flash size smaller for people with slow computers to go onto your site and load the flash faster, or do you want the whole site to transmit information to the user faster? It's a good idea to be more specific to get better help. People will be glad to help you if they know more about what you're asking for.

Make a button with the actionscript to do something after the guy fires his gun, like set a button to have the action of directing the user to a different frame, if the user presses space, or clicks on a target.
