Every rose has its thorns. I dont really hate the American people more for refusing to vote for Obama because of their assumption that he was Muslim. I hate Obama himself more. That is because when those "accusations" came about, he denied being a Muslim vehemently and denied every being one. The way he denied it gave me the hint that he loathed being considered a Muslim and hated even when it was spoken. He could have denied it with much more respect, such as saying: Even if i was Muslim, that would not matter to me in this race. Im here to represent the people of the US. Something like that. Goes to show what candidates are willing to do to secure a vote. They would sell their souls if need be. All in all, you are right about one thing about the American people: They can be disrespectful of others views, and they live in genuine fear of Islam. That does equal discrimination, as I am Muslim myself and have taken flak for it here. I have to say its unfair, but its the disillusionment that gnaws at the American conscience. Otherwise, they are decent folk. In addition, Im from Bosnia, so I blend in easily. Maybe if i was Arab I would have gotten more shit. No one knows. Regardless, Americans just need to grow out of this one silly superstition and they should be alright for the most part.

With all due respect, this is a political forum for the discussion of politics. SERIOUS discussion of politics. Now, I will admit that cellardoor usually does attempt to prove people wrong all the time, but then again thats really what its all about here. If he disagrees with you, he will voice it and attempt to provide a valid argument. Since most people here try to make sense of everything they say, people who do not argue their point effectively will be ousted from a debate. It does not warrant you making crude and vague assumptions or getting mad at the person who proved you wrong. Please, when you see someone like cellardoor (or any one like him around) either dont post or be prepared to run a gauntlet of links, proofs and good arguments. Notwithstanding, this does not mean that cellardoor cannot be proven wrong. There is always something out there that can and will stump him. Thats all fine and good, but you dont want the result of over-emphasis on knowledge to be the under-emphasis of wisdom. America as a whole is known for its critical thinking skills, and is the polar opposite of Japan for example, which focuses primarily on knowledge and reduces the significance of critical thinking and wisdom. Success first comes from the fact that one has to make the decision to be successful, and pursue the knowledge as necessary.

Of course. The attacks were cunningly calculated. Brains mixed with fanaticism gets results, albeit terrible ones. The targets of 9/11 were specifically chosen to damage not only our sense of security, but to damage, as you mentioned, each section of our prosperity (economy, military, and political). It was also to cause as many casualties while sticking to the main goal. My guess would be that the main point of the attack was not to kill people....I think it was just to scare the hell out of America and make them fear the sudden unpredictability of their enemies. However, I do not think that it had the entirety of the intended effects, as you see the American people forgot and went on with their lives within a few weeks of the incident. It did not crush us.

Basically, America keeps a leash on the ambitious powers of the world and keeps them from bullying small countries. I dont see China or Russia, both members of the Security Council, lending military help where its needed without first complaining like little bitches. The US has always been the tip of the spear in fighting the world's common enemies. Many countries and special interest groups would pay to see the US disappear all of a sudden, because that would mean the only obstacle with enough balls to challenge their ambitions has gone poof!

You really disagree that the world would not be a scarred place without American presence? That is a really irrational position you are taking. One might blame the world's problems on American intervention, but if you take a look at history and today, the US has contributed enormous amounts of assistance to the world. Every countries stock market depends on the US doing well. As you may have noticed, Japan's market goes downhill if the American stock market loses footing. Thats only one example. A few reasons here why the world would be turmoil without America and Americans:

First of all, the garrison at the 38th Parallel would disappear, leaving North Korea to invade South Korea freely.

Next, all other peacekeeping forces of American origin would disappear, making it impossible to protect civilians in many world hotspots where rebels have taken root.

Furthermore, the only thing keeping bastard extremists at bay is the will of the US Military at most. They are the one's most devoted to protecting the world from our enemies. It might be slow progress, but it keeps terrorists on their feet and makes it hard for them to organize homefront attacks. What many countries do not realize is that America not only fights to protect itself, but to protect all of its allies everywhere in the world, with hardly a thanks or a pat on the back for encouragement.

Maybe the world would be able to recover if the US suddenly disappeared, but I can tell you that for the first few decades following the event, this world would see chaos unlike any in history.

This is not by any means to boast the greatness of America itself. I only point out the relevant things and what would most likely happen should this event take place.

The argument against is a very good argument. Athletes HAVE been always used as proxies in intergovernmental battles between countries. If you take a look at history, you can see how athletes have trained for years for this one event then it suddenly doesnt take place. Wouldnt you be pissed off at that? In addition, there is no time to set up a new venue somewhere else. It just is not going to happen. It takes years (excluding athletes) to prepare the stadiums and clean up the country.
