If you want computer drums that sound realistic, you should check out the fxpansion BFD. Take a listen to the audio samples on the left. They were all programmed.

Sorry, Insane, but you missed my point.

Logic does everything FL does, and does it with more detail, plus a lot more, so it's easy for a beginner to get bogged down in Logic compared to FL.

I did not make the same points you did.

TeK has narrowed down his choices to FL and Logic. Lets keep it at that.

o_o Wow. Ill informed, or just talking out your ass? Go to a book store. Read a magazine.

Logic, Protools, and Cubase all do essentially do the same things. The "industry standards" are both Protools and Logic (while the NG standard is FL). Protools is used much more in professional studio production and recording while Logic is used more by the professional home musician, which is almost every single electronica producer you can think of. Of course, this isn't black and white there is some cross over in everything. (most professional sound engineers run both Logic and Protools so they can work with everyone)

If you are new to computer music production and are leaning more towards electronica or hiphop, go with FL. It is cheaper and it will be easier to grasp the fundamentals of computer based composition than the higher end programs. If you are leaning more towards home recording, rather than computer composition, then the better choice would be Logic. The Logic vs Protools vs Cubase debate is old and stupid, but all three offer much more flexible than FL, but you pay for it and the learning curve is steep. (you get two 5 lbs manuals with Logic Pro! one for Logic itself and one for all the plugins)

Logic has much much more in box than FL as well. I just pulled Logic up and counted 67 effects/mastering/metering tools and 13 instruments (and the sampler comes with literally hundreds of different sound sets) and 22 garage band instruments, and they all have hundreds of presets. Logic also comes packed with three different jam packs (remix, rhythm section, and symphony orchestra) which vastly expand your sound sets. Then there are the thousands of apples loops which are already time and pitch flexible. All of that sounds great, but let me tell you from experience, it can feel very overwhelming at first.

Either way you go, it will take you a while to get quality results.

If you have any questions feel free to ask or IM me :)

I made a trance remix of Dewy Embers by Gillenium. A listen or two would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Personally, I think that the creative commons license is a great thing, it is the same as before NG made the switch, and the terms are pretty clear, just as they were before: You cannot use other's material without permission, and if you do use it commercially (self promotion/profit) then the terms had to be cleared the the original owner first.

Where some confusion lies is how do you prove someone is profiting from your work, and how much.

If a song is featured in a Hollywood movie or sampled by Timbaland, then it's pretty obvious who is profiting and it's up to the original owner whether or not they are compensated, but this is supposed to be done prior to commercial use. If the material was used without permission in any way shape or form then copyrights are infringed and the original owner has grounds for legal action.

Basically, if you aren't making money from it, then no one else can, either.

But...

Someone is making money from our songs with and without our permission, at the same time. NG itself makes money (I am assuming) from advertisements, but

Q: What attracts people to this site?
A: The constant influx of new material, and huge backlog of old material.

Q: Does that mean we should get a share of that advertisement money?
A: No. They get money as a perk of providing a service. They made a place for everyone to freely submit and distribute their work under the creative commons license, and they let that be known right off the bat.

Everyones work is still protected, but by posting here you have to realize that there is a possibility that a song of yours might end up on a flash game on eBaum's. That's a risk you take posting here. As sick as it sounds, eBaum's providing a very similar service as NG... in spite of the fact eBaum is a f*ing douche and the very idea of inadvertently lining his pockets is revolting.

If you don't like it, post your stuff on iTunes and see how much exposure you get there and see what type of community you're part of.

Frankly, I'll take my CC knocks here.

(I hope I made sense *lol*)

I'm really surprised no one has mentioned ccMixter. All the stuff there is user submitted, including material from a good deal of commercial bigwigs. There are accapellas, beats, riffs, soundscapes and soundsets, and a shit-ton more.

All the stuff there falls under the creative commons copyright license, just like here at NG, so as long as you reference your source material, you can use what ever you want for non-commercial purposes.

Also under the cc license (if you're feeling a bit more experimental) is unfound sound. If you click on unfields (at the top of the page) you will find user submitted field recordings. These are provided mostly for the mnml crowd, but everyone is free to use them.

I remixed a tune from the ambient chart,Dewy Embers by Gillenium, into a full blown trance track.

Dewy Embers (Mo-Tech remix)

Hope you like it!

Also, I would like to do more NG remixes/collabs, so if any of you have a tune, or heard someone elses NG tune, that you would like worked on, just let me know :) I posted a new topic in the audio forum so we can list songs we want to hear remixed, and where remixers can come for source material.

Something I find surprising is that there aren't more remixes on NG of NG artists. I think it would be fantastic if there was a self sustaining remix community here.

Now I know I haven't been around as long or submitted as much as a lot of you other folks (so, therefore, lack some respect and authority), but I would like to start a list of tunes deserving of remixes submitted solely by NG artists. List a song (or songs) and what type of remix you think it should be (trance, dnb, hiphop, etc.)

Some I'm working on right now are, Ice Crystals, Lizard Vortex, and Temple, which are trance/dance remixes, as well as Porch Step, which will be a breaks/bigbeat remix.

I've already finished one of Dewy Embers from the ambient charts, and now sounds like this.

Let the list of potential remixes begin!

Topic: Amateur Lookin 4 Quality Headphones

It depends what you mean by "quality." Do you want good reference (mastering/monitoring) headphones, or good listening headphones?

The ironic thing is, reference headphones will make everything sound like crap, but the point of that is that if you can get a good mix on those headphones than you mix will sound excellent on almost any speakers or headphones. I have these at around $150 but they're pretty uncomfortable (for me anyway) but they come with different replaceable earbuds in different sizes, shapes and hardnesses.

In the end I ended up breaking down and schilling out for good reference speakers! Oh well...

For listening headphones you can go with Bose (about $120) for some awsome sound, but they won't be as durable as say, DJ headphones.

Hope I helped some! :)

Well thanks for the feedback :) Quite frankly, I'd rather have folks say something negative (creatively critical, I mean) than nothing at all.

It's probably nostalgia that made me think this song was better than it really is. I made this song back in late 2001 when I was still using Modplug Tracker and had recently bought my first hardware synth, a Korg Electribe-A, the source of that "ear raping" synth everyone seems to be so fond of (>_<). At the time I was an avid NG viewer, but never got involved. Now fast forward to mid 2007. I was cleaning out some old boxes I have kicking around and came across a stack of unlabeled burnt cds, and on one of these half decade old cds was this song. I figured since I couldn't re-master it (since the original tracks were lost) it might be good enough for NG... boy, you guys showed me otherwise :D. But, I think it was a good excuse to get involved with a community I've wanted to be a part of for a long time.

I'll just take this as a hard lesson learned: Always bring my "A" game!... and don't wait for six years to submit something! (>_<)

Don't worry, alot has changed since '01, and you can expect my future submissions to be of much better quality... and better tuned to the NG croud.

Man I know I'm a NG noob and all, but I didn't think my de-virginizing submission would shunned the way it did. Not even a review. I think the song is pretty good (as far as ambient trance goes) and although it's not perfect, I would not have submitted it was crap. *sigh* I would really appreciate if a handful of you (who actually like trance) to give it a listen at let me know what you think. (it doesn't break down till about 1:30-1:40... maybe that was my mistake; not catering to those with short attention spans... i dunno)
