Sounds like a mixing problem. You are most likely overloading the bass track. Turn it down and it won't be clipping in the stereo mixdown.

That implies a guitarist could not pick up a bass guitar and play... Which is wrong.

That implies a bassist could not pick up a guitar and play... Also wrong.

A guitarist picking up a bass may not be able to do slap bass, a technique almost exclusive to bass guitar.

And a bassist picking up a guitar may not be able to do barre chords, a technique almost exclusive to guitar.

Pretty much every thing else is extremely similar in technique. I've spent a combined total of about 12 years playing both instruments... And I've spent 25 years around experienced bass and guitar players... I'm not talking out my ass.

If you're read any article in Bass Player or interviews with bassists like Wooten, Clark or Garrison, you'd know that every point you have there is largely myth. Bassists who've been playing professionally have all claimed to be able to hear a guitarists turned bassist easily due to over simplified rhythms, over use of root notes and 5ths, technique that is merely aggressive guitar strumming toned down to one string and a much weaker ability to play in time and develop a strong foundation. The reason is, according to pros, is that they are still thinking of themselves as guitarists and not bassists, and are playing the guitar still, just an octave lower, creating a muddy, directionless bottom end that doesn't glue the rhythm section together or the rhythm section to the rest of the band well.

Just because the 4 strings on the average bass are the same as the lowest 4 on a guitar is meaningless in the long run. The two instruments are not even related. Basses are part of the viol family and have more in common with other viols, viola de gambas and so forth. Guitars are part of the guitar family. A bass guitar is just a bass viol that is played on its side.

Now, if you've played classicalguitar, you have a better chance of adopting a good bass technique as electric bass uses rest strokes and sometimes free strokes as the foundation of finger style. But you still have a different thing to deal with: you can know your chords and arpeggios on guitar easily, but without the high B and E string, you have to learn how to adopt those for just 4 strings and still make it work without large position shifts. Playing arpeggios, especially in jazz, is much more difficult without those higher strings and knowing the best tones to hit as part of the groove is very key. If you have an Eb9#11 chord and you're walking over it for 4 beats, what do you play? The horns will probably have much of the upper partials, as will the piano. But the piano and guitar may be omitting roots and fifths to give you more room on the bass. But not all the time. You have to have a much greater knowledge of chord structure when you're playing all arpeggios than if you're just playing block chords, you need to know how to build a groove from those notes, keep in strict time, and how to use approach notes from above, below and how to create transitions from one chord to the next so that the entire song moves properly and evenly.

The guitar doesn't need to do this because there is usually a very good bassist making that magic happen. There is a whole different mentality and world of musical knowledge needed in order to be a solid bassist in any band or style that guitarists often can safely neglect. Why should they have to know how to properly transition from one chord to the next within only one beat? That single note the bassist has is the difference between a great song and getting panned.

Response to: Learning Bass Posted December 2nd, 2011 in Audio

Learn your chord arpeggios inside and out in all areas of the neck and if you're going to be doing jazz, learn how to walk over a variety of chord changes in different tempos, grooves and times. The biggest mistake guitar to bassists make is thinking there's nothing different (see above post) or not much. Bass and guitar are worlds apart when it comes to functionality, technique and establishing a good feel. Too many guitar to bassists are obviously guitarists first; horrible players who can't keep it in the pocket, play off the drummer or develop the rhythm for the life of them.

We are taxed enough already, the federal income tax is unconstitutional and the supreme court acknowledges it as they do not pay any income tax at all, and the entire taxation system is made to racketeer the citizens.

Response to: "Irrational" time signatures? Posted September 14th, 2011 in Audio

The bottom number of the time signature must be 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc. It's based on the division of notes, such as whole, half, quarter, eights, etc. and cannot be anything but. The top number can be changed, for instance 5/8 and 7/8 are common in Greek folk music (and shitty Rack songs). Having no time signature is about as abstract as you can get but this is only found in Renaissance and Medieval music where in some cases where there actually is a time signature, it is usually a sacred or royal symbol or for time, a single number 3 (and in this music it is not uncommon to see several whole notes in the span of a few 8ths in modern music, it can be a real bitch to read and is a reason why a degree in historical performance is mandatory in order to play such pieces, especially in public).

Money we print has to be backed up by gold, without it the value of the dollar drops.

Our money hasn't been backed by gold since the Depression, and Nixon ended all gold backing permanently in the 1970s. The other solution is better:

In order to combat unemployment, the greatest solution lies in taking those who are unemployed and putting them to work in the military. This provides them with jobs and discipline, preventing these individuals from degrading America by tapping into "resources" such as welfare and unemployment. We the People do not need to pick up their slack! This is NOT a socialist state! These people have NO RIGHT to take and take and take and give nothing back. Service to this nation is the best solution!

In an ideal America, citizenship is earned in combat: no one is naturalized and no one is born into citizenship. It is gained only through at least two to three years of active service in one of the armed forces. If you want to be American, you must love America. To love America you must give back to her! Freedom isn't free, no matter what the democrats tell you!

This would solve the illegal immigrant question easily as well: those who are truly ready to be American citizens can prove their worth defending this nation, and those who are not (the cowards) can go back to Mexico.

Those who do not or cannot (in an ideal America, everyone can!) join the military will not face deportation unless they were born to non-American citizens or were born in another country. These individuals however will have no right to vote and should pay additional taxes as penalty for lack of service. All economic gains made from these taxes can provide aid to REAL heroes who served America and shed blood to do so!

Since I was born here, I'm not an immigrant. Don't give me that "native American" crap, a bunch of primate "injuns" who can't handle their liquor don't have any say, if they did, then they'd be here trying to stop the flow of progress. Science has proven that an indian isn't capable of functioning in a modern society and has no ability to adapt; they are perpetually primitive.

I think you're mistaken. The Rack and his gigantic flabby breasts are the worst thing to ever happen to music. This is pure shit. There is not a single piece that is in time. Half of them are out of tune. There is no theme. No direction. No elements of composition or coherency at all. This is nothing but wanking at its worst. YouTube has enough of it. We're lucky this fucker was driven off of Newgrounds but he's still polluting YouTube and now Soundcloud, wobbling his tits about like he owns the place.

This is not music. What I create is true music and simply put, genius. I have 2 degrees from Juilliard in piano and guitar and a master's in audio engineering from UCLA. I know what I'm doing. I have the credentials and I have the experience. I've played since I was 4 and surpassed all of my teachers within at least two years. I received some of the highest honors and scholarships that Juilliard could offer me. There is some sort of conspiracy on this site keeping me down.

My advice would be to actually DO record something you play or start writing down scores. No matter how bad. If you have a well developed taste in music, you will spend decades to reach the level you try to achieve. But if you record something and listen to it later, you will find out, where you have to improve and make it better the next time.

Well, maybe for YOU. Not everyone is stuck using simple 3 chord pentatonic melodies. Some of us are conservatory graduates with years of experience in composition, performance and historical interpretation. With that, it's quite easy to compose in the style of the classics, romantics, impressionists, etc. (unless you have giant man tits). It just takes practice and harmony knowledge in order to decipher why those pieces sound the way they do, and how you too can create that effect.

The keyboards you've selected are actually quite heavy and clumsy. I'd recommend the M-Audio Axiom series or the Novation Remote series. If you travel a lot get the 25 key model, if it's for studio work, look into a 49 or 61 model, you can always get a keyboard stand at a local music store and set it up next to your workstation.

Acid is good if you have the pro version. If you're looking for another program that you can create with look into Reason, Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools or Cubase.
