Here are the contest scores, all from last to whatever. I figured might as well just DUMP everything in all these files here. At least I sorted them for you jerks >:(!!!! There were 3 submissions that were disqualified due to song limit violations. You were supposed to make a track for the video, that should quite clearly state that the song should end when the video does. I don't want to hear any "I worked like a beast on that song!!!". You could have spent 1/100th of that energy sending a simple pm for clarification before going off to do your 50 hour project.

You'd get less sympathy from a contractor I assure you.

Here is some critique and comments from ME for each of these submissions. Note THESE ARE FROM ME ALONE! They had no impact on the other judges as they didn't get to read them of course. Take them as my personal appraisal. Don't consider them to be the staple of the scoring, if you don't agree with what is said, that's fine, i'm not out to make enemies here. You may request me posting the critique on our song if you'd like a chance to respond or something.

COMMENTS
Los-illuminados - Mystic Forest

5.1
Good opening, and that transition from tree to flurry of leaves via wind chimes, was a good idea. It allowed for a decent means of carrying over a similar energy, whilst allowing the listeners to realize things were changing.

The second time you used it, was unnecessary. The song was already fading out, having it simply fade out, and come back in without the wind chimes would have been far more effective.

That suddent cut off at 1:37 with the windchimes, killed the flow. Completely. The idea of bringing back the opening tense vibe for the bird was a good idea, but you could have easily just faded it out and started it again like you had the second windchime.

The fourth windchime was a detrimental tactic. It is okay to use something like that once, MAYBE twice, but four times, makes it sound very aggressive, and it is unnecessary.

ChrisOrosco - CJO:MAC8MTM
5.3
Had a very appropriate and interesting opening. The sudden cut off to view the floating leaf was a good decision. Made the song sync with the song on a deeper level. The sudden break out again with that thick mist, another good call. The hip hop sensation that came out of this track is rather interesting to note.

The song however feels linear, and other then the cut off and cut in, did not seem to communicate with the video. There was just no intimate connection after 30 or so seconds in.
LJC - Propagation(MAC8) video
5.3

SineRider - Flutter
5.5
A nice dark opening. Wind sfx very fitting. Continues on a very tense path despite the opening of the song, remains gentle. The video is beginning to bring out more colors, more imagery, yet this song remains on the low level.

At the point of 1:06 with the thick mist and lights shining behind it, the vibes and sounds going on there were really good. Build up with the blaring sun at 1:40, good move. Loss of colors and energy in the video did not seem to effect the piece in any way.

The track was well produced, however it was a hit and miss thing with the clip, it did not feel like it should belong together.

MJJTOMB
6.0
Very suiting toybox opening. Very fragile sounding throughout, which has it's moments, yet at many parts of the clip where there were colors flurrying about, washing away wildly, it at those moments felt lacking. Like the music was playing for somebody who was watching this clip behind some kind of window instead of the music playing from the song itself.

The ending was also rather weak, with a simple cut off and many seconds of silence.

WritersBlock - Prologue
6.2
Good opening with an oppressive piano. Uplifting progression with the glimpse of the blossoming flowers, and awe struck sensation when viewing the flurry of leaves, also a very effective and moving decision.

At 1:03, when that mist explodes, the song did not seem to be moved at all by it. I would have liked to see more reaction from the song.

Similar story with the sun explosion. The bird flying away scene, was handled incredibly well. Cut off ending.

Rocky Marshall - Growth in C minor
6.5
Feels a bit disjointed. The animation. The ending 1:18 synched very well with the main theme. A bit too much repetition of that theme, does not work effectively when used like it did. Overall the song did not feel like it matched up with the video. Great ending.

RyeGuyHead - Drowning
6.7
Appropriate light opening. Good thrown mix of percussion to pick up the energy as the tree thrives and grows. Mystical and driving, however there was little to no syncing, and in many passages the song's energy seemed either too low, or too high for partciular segments. There was also some very appropriate marks, like that ending.

The ending was this submissions' strongest point. Very appropriate, very well timed, and the vibe of it was just fantastic. Sadly it was not enough to make up for the other short comings.

Developer - ///
7.1
A hip hop beat. Didn't see this coming at all, yet it works out well. Angry and progressive oriented. Like a world reaching out, wanting to thrive, not taking anything less. However the nature of the video does not call for so much angry vibes. The syncing with the clouds at the minute mark, were FANTASTIC. Really dug into the video there, and demanded attention. I'd say the first minute was lacking, however the second minute picked up a lot of slack. At 1:50, the lack of colors, and energy did not relate with the still somewhat hyper energy of the beat. Ending was neat, but felt a little rushed.

Kr1z - MAC8 - Music to Motion
7.4
The opening works well with the opening of the video, though the thunder may have been of ill use here, as the gliding petal doesn't seem to be flying through any turmoil. The anger and danger the thunder portrayed at that opening seemed off.

Euphoric energies present a great idea and flow to the thriving nature of the video. Great cut off and reintroduction with that opening mist scene.

Syncs very well with the introduction of those suns as well, this energy carries out appropriately while the bird flies through, however the energy it portrays feels wrong when the world loses all it's color. The song feels rushed, and like it's trying to wrap things up as quickly as possible.

Nal1200 - Vivid Illusions
7.5
A neat filtered opening. Harp sounded a bit fake. Great build up, BRILLIANT. Epic as hell, mystical, relates to the progression, and build of the song WONDERFULLy. Repetition of a segment at 0:52 hurt the song's nature. The build up and ascension for the 1:06 mark was somewhat ill handled. The tangent it took off was a tad too much. The last 30 seconds was also somewhat ill fitting. Harp at the ending, similar to the beginning, did not pan out much creativity points, it tried to fit an already established image in my head, with another portrayed later.

Great start, decent middle, somewhat lacking end.

Ethnoworld 4 by Best Service is a HUGE library of instruments. Their falling however is the articulations. They have a huge selection but each instrument is limited in styles of play. This is rarely a problem for composers who don't want to focus on a specific instrument *and thus are not worried about making it sound live too much*.

The producers of Dizi Flute, have made several more oriental instruments, all at incredible depths and styles of play. I'd say if you want ONLY oriental stuff like the koto/dizi/erhu instruments, they are the way to go.

That is actually a damn fine site. You can hear a lot of high level composers for free, great study material as well as an incredibly comprehensive rate guide to give aspiring composers an idea of what the standard rate of commissions and media related costs are for producers/developers.

Bookmarked, thanks for this!

Newgrounds, as Rig here just pointed out, is a democratic site. Everybody gets to vote. The majority of the listeners swoop in, take the song if they like it, and swoop out. The site has a steady give/take system. The more you put into your PR efforts, reviewing other musicians work, posting on the forums etc, the more attention you will garnish and be more exposed.

You are not the first, nor the last who will be exposed to 0 bombing. Good luck to you!

A huge thanks for the hefty bulk of ideas my good sir. At the least you are throwing them out there. Though good natured there are some problems with these ideas which will result in them failing. Allow me to explain.

At 6/14/08 12:10 AM, Nintechno wrote: Hey man, I have a couple of Ideas:
1 - FL Core contest: I realise this has been done by good ol' Dj-Nate...But its a good idea. Basically, you can only use the samples and generators available in the Producer Edition of FruityLoops. It is a real test of one's creativity and skills...But is worth the effort, you will be suprised how much you learn!
We would have to come up with an alternative for Reason/Garageband users though XD

The idea is good however we would need a judge who has all 3 or more engines used, and knows all the basic sounds in them to make sure nobody cheats, and trust me, SOMEBODY(S) will cheat with this idea. "Duhr, it's a 3xOSC, I SWEAR!"

2 - Redo The song: You come up with a melody, bassline, chords and stuff for a song, and then leave it up to people to make a proper song out of it. They can use anything at their disposal, and would be encouraged to add their own style and flair to the piece. That way, people can showcase their musical style by choosing their own genre and stuff. You could provide a Flp/Midi for people to start with.
But everyone might get sick of the same old melody ^_^

HouseMasta used to run a MRAC Monthly Remix Audio Contest, which had this feature. First one had 1 melodic line, the second had 3, and third one never came out, but I assume he would have had 5. This is a valid option, added to the list!

3 - Generic "Free for all": You could always just make it so people can do whatever the hell they wan't. Unfourtunatley, people will just submit their most recent masterpieces, and wont put any effort into a 'competition only' piece. use this as a last resort only!

The judging on this WOULD BE A NIGHTMARE! Everybody would be like "Well my style is just not appreciated, but I assure you, it is the best song of them all!" and the whining and the bitching would just never end. One thing everybody is good at in Newgrounds is taking any award moment, and then screwing it up with "Good job, you're an undeserving idiot >:(!".

4 - Themed Contest: Choose a theme that people have to stick to, such as a "Castle Crashers Theme" theme ^_^ (already been done, I know) That way, people acually have to put some thought and effort into their submission. The theme could be anything! And we could have a vote r something for that.

A bit vague my good sir. Themed contests are all valid, but we need theme ideas.

5 - Video Game Remix: Choose a single video game, or video game company...and remix/redo a theme from one of the songs available there. So...you could do a Final Fantasy song, Nintendo Game song, Sonic, Zelda, Mario Bros, Kriby etc etc...

No. I'm afraid I can't ask TomFulp for money if we're going to be doing work off somebody elses work. These contests should be completely creative and original.

6 - King of the Genre: Simple. Choose a genre/genres, and that/they can be the categorys for submissions. You could have: Classical, Trance, Dance and Ambient (examples only), and people submit songs that fit the genre perfectly, and the best one's in each genre are declared the "King of the Genre" and stuff.

Same as idea number 4. Insane judging, hellish nightmare, bitching and whining, hundreds of entries... ugh...

Thats about all I can come up with for now, but hopefully these are some good ideas, or will spawn some more/better ideas for other users. But I think the main idea should be to include everyone, and give everyone included a fair chance.

Agreed, that's why we're looking.

All I know, is that I WILL be competing!

I look forward to it ;D!

And the story reading idea is actually pretty good. Added!

Hey guys. I know the results are not out yet. I can't help it if people make promises and can't deliver. I envy LJCoffee for getting out while he could... damn him. Enough emo talk, lets get down to business.

Since everybody has been going on and on about how much the past 2 MAC's suxed. I am now taking all suggestions for the next upcoming MAC! Until the 20th that is. After which I will be creating a poll on my site, and you can all vote for whichever one you want to participate in.

If I get no feasible suggestions, or nobody takes this process seriously, I will seriously rape the eyes out of anybody who complains about the MAC's ever again, so lets do this, and do it right!

We have currently.

Nav - Experimental MAC. Make it as funky or as head messing as you can! Use anything and everything at your disposal! However note that random percussion samples, and random timed sounds and just stupid mess submissions will be ridiculed and insulted heavily.

And that's really it. Yes, I've gotten one suggestion thus far. So let's hear it guys! What's the next MAC gonna be!?

I disagree. There are a LOT of factors to think about.

For example, people have grown to love that theme... a LOT. So CBC MIGHT favor songs which have a similar vibe. In fact, their secret agenda may very well be, have some cheesy rip off of the old theme, so they can just buy it out, and cover themselves. They wouldn't admit that of course, but that's one way to go.

This theory is boosted by people like mariomusicmaker, who has just proven that people like him have grown to love that song.

So how close to the original do they want it? Do they want something completely fresh after 41 years of traditional same?

With no way of knowing, you can only throw your hat into the ring totally blind. Maybe I think too much, but there you have it.

I was going to wait until the contest website opened to make a post *good going >:(!*, but here is the basic story behind it.

HNIC (Hockey Night In Canada) theme song was not renewed it's license. CTV bought out the song but CBC has right now, nothing. They are holding a contest for a new theme, in which they will buy the rights full out from the beginning, as opposed to the 500 bucks per use they had last time.

The song can be about anything I imagine, with any genre, but i'm PREEEETY sure songs of more traditional sounds *ie instrumental stuff* might stand a better chance. I mean people have been hearing some jazzy orchestral thing for it for 41 years, I figure people are used to hearing it a certain style. Keep your eyes open, the website for the contest airs in about 5 days.

first thing you should know is that STP operates in it's reviews rather strangely. You get Scout levels by voting how you think everybody else votes on a song, and because all the high level scouts seem to have a voting average of 5.5, they'll do nearly ANYTHING to justify voting it 6 or 5.

In one of my songs, 2 of the 3 reviews were of morons who actually MADE UP instruments, and then call them fake sounding...

yeah, so I guess we can't really rely on getting good feedback from here either. I had no idea the system was so corrupt.
