ok ok I get it! No need to jeer me anymore.

It's really no problem. It did suck after all. And I'm not one to get discouraged over a welld eserved flame or two

Response to: MPoulter's art thread Posted July 19th, 2011 in Art

Still not quite finished, but he background is more than a placeholder.

I had thought the character's body position was alright given that the lasers were meant to be knocking him off balance. But I def see what you mean about the leg being too short. Wish I had noticed before I had gotten this far...

I turned down the red on the dog. I think I still need to play with it, but I think I'll finish up on it soon. Like I said its just a stupid sight gag joke, not a brilliant work of art. Still I wish I had come here for character advice when he was still uncolored/unshaded.

I mean that is fair. It is fairly awful. I threw it together farily quickly with the paintbrush tool and no straight lines, shading, or color choice, etc.

I do prefer charcter design to backgrounds though so I was hoping for some advice. Redoing with the straight line tool now but its a bit too rigid for me and I'm still trying to get it so the color choice doesn't overshadow the foreground action

Response to: MPoulter's art thread Posted July 19th, 2011 in Art

Thanks for the feedback. Background is def placeholder while I figure out what kind of scale and colors I want to use. In terms of anatomy- I assume you're saying that the legs are too short for the body? I can see that. I was ok with it myself. Techically I suppose he would fall over as well. I could always move the forwad leg back...
and I'll def turn down the red on the dog or play around with dif filters.

Thanks again

MPoulter's art thread Posted July 18th, 2011 in Art

So I never offically made an art thread for myself and that seems to be the thing to do. Been a while since I've posted anything. My portfolio can be found here: http://mpoulter.newgrounds.com/art/

Below is a WIP that I was hoping to get some advice on. It's a simple sight gag so I'm not spending too much time on it, but I wanted to get soem opinions on background colors, characters sizes, and anything else relevant. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

So I haven't posted anything in a while. I just finished this one. It's the last Wonderland pic I plan on doing, for a while anyway. Let me know what you think.

Wow my thread finally past one page...although its mostly me talking to myself. Thanks for the feedback. In terms of the paradise lost pic that was from a while ago. I have updated it slightly. It looks better now, but to be honest I kind of bailed on it when finals started. Thanks to everyone for the responses though. I'm continuing to work on my latest drawing but progress is slow. Hatching without a stylis is time consuming.

Response to: New Cartoon Posted June 23rd, 2010 in Art

so I thought I'd go ahead and update my thread (as its been a while) with a WIP. I haven't hatch shaded in the past because I use a mouse to draw and the individual lines are fairly tedious. However, I thought the effect would be good for this particular piece. Its still in a fialry early stage but starting to come together. I was planning on maybe doing the hilights in orange/yellow. Any thoughts? Feedback in general would be appreciated, but if not thats fine too. There's not really much there yet anyway

Response to: New artist, any ideas? Posted May 25th, 2010 in Art

Definetly not a bad start. I'm not sure of your techniques, but it seems to me that you don't block your pics out with simple shapes first, or if you do, you don't stick to those shapes when you finalize the lines. Also, spend more time on some of the dtails you may no think matter like the legs. Don't simply put a peanut shape, take the time to draw it with more original shape and detail. Like I said, you're starting at a good point and you demonstarte an understanding of cartoon anatomy which is important, but take a little bit more time, plan your shapes better, and practice

Response to: b-day card Posted April 26th, 2010 in Art

thanks for the advice, both of you. Perhaps I'll add a texture/pattern to the first half-something subtle, and enlarge the image in it. As for te second image, you're both right. I'm a minimalist when it comes to background details. I didn't even shade the baloon things. The scribbles in the background are supposed to be confetti, I'm not sure if that's what you were telling me to improve on. If so, I'm not really sure what else I would do. To be honest, I tried to keep the entire design simple. Like I said, it has a practical application and isn't necessarily "art"

b-day card Posted April 26th, 2010 in Art

This is kinda random, so bear with me
My school is holding a competition to design the birthday card that the dean sends out to students. Normally I wouldn't be interested in such a thing and I have more than enough legitimate work to do, but the winner of the contest gets $200. With that in mind, I've begun working on a couple designs for cards, and I would really appreciate any feedback I could get. I've finished the first one and will porbably upload the other two within the next week.
This isn't exactly serious art or anything, but the money would be really nice right about now.

There's a known glitch in the Art portal that makes it very hard to use with IE. Try a different browser, if you have one.

no, I know about that. I've been using Firefox. It just keeps telling me that I've already uploaded the image. I did upload it before, but I went back and edited it and deleted the original, so theres no reason it shouldn't go through. O well. Maybe it just won't work

upload issues Posted April 20th, 2010 in Where is / How to?

I just tried to edit one of the pics I have up, but the system told me it wouldn't let me because i had already uploaded it. even though I had changed it so I deleted the original pic so that I could upload the new one, and now the system won't let me upload the new pic and the old pic is deleted. How do I get my pic back up?

Its difficult to see verything that's going on, so its hard for me to judge. that being said, some advice on cross hatching: you need to increase/reduce the frequency/proximity of the lines depending on how light or dark the area is. All of your cross hatching is uniform throughout the piece which creates no effect at all.

Something I'm working on right now. It's loosely inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost. If possible, I'd like some advice on how to polish it up. Specifically, the hair I think needs work. Also, I'm unsure of what I should do with the background. I'm leaning towards keeping it blank as the pic is in danger of getting cluttered, but I'm open to suggestions

Response to: I Need Your Opinion Posted April 15th, 2010 in Art

I can see how the illusion would work, and its a good idea. However, I think the greeb abd puple was a poor choice of colors. They're both too dark, and somehow similar. The effect is somewhat diminished, although I am willing to admit that this perception could simply be due to the angle of the shot, quality of the photograph, and the fact that it appears to be very darkly lit, so all of my comments could mean nothing.

Response to: Hello! Posted April 15th, 2010 in Art

What program are you using for the lines. Most come with a feature which smoothes over small, naturally occurring wobbles (within reason). Play around with the properties and settings on whatever your using and find a level of line correction that works with your movements. I use a mouse on all of my drawings, and have managed to avoid a jagged appearance. The drawing itself is nice. The perspective seems a little bit skewed, but that may have been an intentional effect. Shading can be tricky sometimes, but just try to think of your character as occuppying a three dimesnional space. Which pieces of him would block out light? Criticsms aside though, I like the stye of it. Fix a couple of minor details and it'll be really nice

Response to: Advice? Posted April 14th, 2010 in Art

I particularly like the second one. You really got the blendign and light source down on that one. First one looks a little pixely to me, but cool nonetheless. You have creative ideas and the ability to pull them off. There's not much advice you can be given at that point but to keep practicing and take it to the next level.

Response to: Help me out, please? Posted April 13th, 2010 in Art

The jaw needs to be longer and brought a little farther foward possibly as well. The ear is completely out of perspective-you're using a side view while the ear appears to be in a frontal view. It's not bad though. I know what you mean about jealousy too. It sucks that there are so many awesome artists out there. My advice would be to look at how certain artists create certain effects. Don't steal anything by any means, but make a conscious effort to understand why something you like is good.

Response to: My art Posted April 13th, 2010 in Art

Looks good. I personally prefer cleaner lines, but I guess that's the nature of paint. I'd like to see more, and I'd like to see a couple of pictures with more of a visible background (I guess the third had a full background), that way the characters feel more fleshed out. Still, you're good. A lot of talent, and a lot of stuff I couldn't pull off

Response to: New Cartoon Posted April 13th, 2010 in Art

Well not that I got any advice, but I went ahead and added highlights anyway. I'm not complaining about the lack of response of course. This is a busy forum with plenty of other things to comment on. I'll continue to post in this random thread I've created, and if anyone feels like talking about what's in here. I'm sure they will. haha

Aside from that, nice detailed work

haha. Sorry to double post. I realize this comment doesn't make too much sense. On my browser it only showed your starter pic with no comments for some reason. Maybe cuz I'm using internet explorer, or maybe the page wasn't done loading, but my bad. Feel free to ignore my outdated and useless comment
