I assume you use a vector based program. You should round some of the edges, espacially... well on some round parts. Other than that they look nice. Simple but nice. Third picture is my favourite too.

@Cloudy: So you mean I should make the "foam" almost form one "line"? I'll try that, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

I think I understand now, maybe not one line but closer together more "dense". Right?

Besides that, I don't really understand what you did to the pic. It does not look "real" in any way. It's just a different texture on exactly the same cartoony computer game character. Even if you did not trace it, you bascially just drew a copy. Far from pixeloo's work to me.

Response to: Flood the Portal Fridays! 3 Posted November 30th, 2010 in Art

Thanks everybody for the great advice.

@Johnny: I gave it a quick try and made the dark area a little less intense and it looked much better. Also it doesn't follow the contour that much now. I'll post a screenshot later, when I finished it.

@J-qb: I planned to add the noise effect later. Still thanks for the tip.

@ToaS: In fact there will be some imprints in the sand as part of the pic. I can clearly see what you mean by the reference pic. For now I'm making the dark part less intense and pretend most of the wet part is covered. And I went back to the first version which I will edit, because as you said, the wave would be too strong to just slowly stop with as much foam as in the second version.

@Cloudy: So you mean I should make the "foam" almost form one "line"? I'll try that, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

Hey everybody,

with a busy week behind me, I started my entry just yesterday and could use some help. Look at the screenshots below. The top one was my initial version. It looks like the water is flying above the ground, but I wanted it to look as if the sand close to the water was just wet.

The lower version was my try to fix it. It's still not the way I want it to look, but it's a little better. But therefore it looks like a bigger wave, I wanted it to flow more "flat" onto the beach. (Hope the explanation is understandable, sorry if I mix up some english words)

Any advice how to fix this?

Since you mention the skin colour in particular, I think it suits the image well. Adds a goulish/morbid (whatever is the correct english term) feeling to the pic.

Would be great if you had a uncoloured version saved somewhere, that you can show us. But since your colouring seems nice I doubt it will look much better without colour.

Really nice reviews. That post ends up on my useful links list. Thanks!

To OP: In addition to what Luxembourg said, if you are 100% sure that you are going for a Cintiq someday anyway and worry about investing 350$ in a Intuos before, you could consider buying a used one and sell it when upgrading. They sell them on the wacom website, too.

In case you are, then buy one for me too.... or for the whole art forum.

Also I'm not sure if everyone will understand your instructions.

I'm not really sure what you are trying to ask. But if you mean, if you can write new text for existing nursery rhymes or make up completely new rhymes, then yes you can do both. Johnny said that somewhere.

The writing forum can be a forsaken place from time to time, so don't worry.

I really like your work here. It transfers a feeling of loneliness even though it describes crowded places, parties and so on.

Can't really say much more than it's very good.

I honestly think this could work as pretty good lyrics for a rock ballad. Maybe with some minor tweaks here and there to have proper verses, chorus and bridge but I'm not sure if that's absolutely necessary.

That's also what I thought first when I read the thread title.

Response to: Comic Writing Posted November 22nd, 2010 in Writing

Well if you want to write a serious comic you combine writing the dialog for the speech bubbles and the additional text boxes (like "Meanwhile...blablabla") with writing instructions what happens in the panels.

Here you can find a really awesome tutorial about the topic.

Good luck and maybe you can show it to us when you have finished something.

I'm surprised, there were so many submissions for robot day, I thought this would do just as well, if not better, seeing as how nursery rhymes are terrible easy to write, and these are more fun.

I think this needs an art thread already. It will draw more people here.

Where did everyone go?

I've been to Amsterdam if you really want to know.

I have another short rhyme, but I keep on editing and editing because I'm not satisfied with the outcomes.

Have you found an appropriate weather print as a gift yet?

How come the new icon? And why are there smelly lines?

Response to: Apologies and misunderstanding Posted November 21st, 2010 in Art

Sorry if you don't feel welcome here, but in fact it's just traces that are not welcome. I had to go through that experience myself when I came here.

Maybe (and only maybe) your wife coloured and shaded the pic herself as well as added the missing part of the foot, but the lines are 100% traced. No matter how good she is as an artist, she can't draw them exactly identical by hand. NO WAY!

Once you get over that and accept our issues, you can still feel welcome here.

Oh my god. How come this went so way overboard?

LegolaSS was obviously joking when he posted the rules. He's around long enough to know who liljim is. So for the record it was a joke.

I guess the initial question was answered already and I couldn't really find any other useful link.

Sorry that I continue about the rule change, but I still feel an important thing has not been mentioned yet.

Even if someone didn't post a starter pic in his thread before the rule change, he still received answers, was provided useful links to tutorials and/or was at least contacted (thread or pm) by an art mod, who told him why his thread was locked and where he can find futher help or information.

Browse through some locked threads and you'll find plenty of links to the lounge, the request thread, posemaniacs, art101's profile, ornery's scouting guide, countless tutorials and so on.

It just sounded like the staff is thinking all that the art forum regulars are doing is bitching around when someone new pops up. I'm faaaaar from elite and when I came here I really sucked at drawing, but I still felt welcome here and got tons of good tips and honest feedback. One must just be able to accept critique.

If you think the starter pic rule is not necessary, then ok, let's trust in your decision. But it couldn't hurt to add a rule or the "advice" that says people should provide examples of their own works if possible. And that it will increase their chances of getting proper advice and feedback. How about that?

We cool?

Although the tutorial used +40, I've gone up to +60. Also, I usually sharpen the curves with a larger S-shape than the tutorial showed as well.

I put in +50 and I added a weaker and a stronger blur to closer and more far away buildings. The shift-effect however is almost lost in the smaller version here in the forum. :(

I'll probably repost a better (and probably cropped) version when I find the time.
