Response to: Best Free Drawing Program For Mac? Posted February 20th, 2013 in Art

At 2/20/13 01:37 PM, AtomicWhales wrote: I tried looking around online and I couldn't find any good programs for drawing in. So I figured checking newgrounds forums would be the best place to check out and see what the community thinks. What is the best free program?

Thanks!

I think the overall opinion is that Gimp is the best free allrounder and works on Mac as far as I know. Apart from that, it depends on what you want to do.

Check art101's list of art programs, try those that are marked as 'FREE' and see which work with a Mac and suit your needs best.

This reminds me an aweful lot of the Dick Figures Kickstarter: 300.000 dollars for a 40-minute stick figure animation a single guy could do in flash in about 2 months.

Whatever, good luck to them I suppose.

I was thinking the same way about animations like this before, but I know about a crowdfunding project for a cartoon episode that needed 150k plus 100k that the 'inventor' of the series had already invested thus far. For only one episode. Even though its animation was slightly less simple, the 250k for 8 episodes that C&H want to produce don't seem to be much in comparison.

It's hard to compare a cartoon production for a TV show with the (although equally good) stuff you can find on NG where people put their creative energy and time into personal projects or collaborations with friends. If you wanna hire animators, you gotta pay them.

I thought the same when I saw the thread, but I think the important difference is, that whoever posts in here, agrees that his lineart or color job might end up in a flash. Would be complicated to establish that in the old thread.

I'll join in the fun when I get to my laptop.

Response to: Panicpop's New Shirt Posted February 18th, 2013 in Art

I remember your previous thread and although I think your current design is not bad, the way the cat in the previous version actually freaked / geeked out looked better to me.

I googled "geekin out" too and there are some shoet designs with the same idea already, but yours is one of the better ones in my opinion. As it has been mentioned before, your designs could benefit from stronger lines.

I don't think this has changed yet. But there is still the collab forum or his other threads.

Ok the old deadline would be in 1 hour. So this + 1 hour of work would have been my submission if it wasn't for the really really great extension. Gladly I can work on it some more, maybe even fix the rushed upper face and some light stuff. Thanks!

You should go for it! Everyone who has submitted already can use the deadline extention to polish their stuff.

Look, your drawings are really nice, but if you want useful replies you should:

1. Be more patient, seriously, 25 minutes is not a long time.

2. Instead of posting links to your art, you should include them with your post using that from reading "include picture" which you can find below the text form when typing a new post.

3. Not bump your thread without anything new to add.

Back to your art, I already said it was nice, but the fact that you did it in Paint is impressive. If you are looking for more detailed feedback, critique or help, please include a pic and ask / tell us specificly.

Actually, I like the idea of a gallery that you unlock piece by piece in different minigames. Like a mixture of this Clocktopia gallery and Lil' Jose's Build-A-Bot. You'd need a good programmer though.

When checking Zane's post history (since I hadn't noticed him around in a while) I read that he can't access tinychat. :(((((

Are there more users experiencing problems with it? I think we shouldn't stop looking for alternatives when there is a number of regs who can't access the chat.

Yes it is. Instructions depend on the program you are using. MS Paint can do the job, but other software gives better results usually.

You can find some programs here (some are free too):

ReNaeNae, TurkeyOnAStick or Ornery would be the right people to ask about an art contest in the forum (or literally every other issue concerning the art forum). You should explain your contest idea to them in detail and see what they think of it.

Fairly sure the tinychat app has the same parameters as the Stickam one did; that is, rooms are local to the iOS and can't interract with rooms established on the host site.

I looked into it and you are right. That sucks. Thanks for the heads up though.

An alternative, the one I use, is the Puffin flash browser application, which is buttfuck useless for anything that isn't a chatroom but works pretty well in that context.

Oh I remember that you told me about it, didn't remember the app's name though. Thanks.

I work really slow or rather... inefficient. Some basic drafts, a lot of Ctrl+Z and more often than not a few discarded attempts. The finished pieces are really pretty good so far, but they are also motivating me to produce something that I can put next to them without having to be ashamed. lol

B-b-but artists are people, too. :'(

I agree with all that has been said so far. What struck me additionally is the title Style vs. accuracy. If it is your style, then it's still accurate, even if it's not realistic. Otherwise both stylized or realistic art would be just accidental, as it has been pointed out already. While I am typing this, I start figuring that you meant realism rather than accuracy and thus my post is not really necessary here. But I'm not sure.

Best movie: Prosnorkulus

Best game: Abobo

Lucky Day Forever was awesome, but you can't deny that the main idea has been done over and over again. Is it unfair that I expect originality more from a deep and beautiful movie like Lucky Day Forever, but less so from a violent funny movie like Prosnorkulus (which was awesome as well)? Maybe...

User of the Year:

RicePirate (assuming he didn't win 2011)

Shocking that his name hasn't been mentioned yet. Few users (excluding those who won that award already) contributed nearly as much to NG as he did.

or

deathink

Same reason as above, but without the 'hasn't been mentioned yet' part.

Can't really pick a musician, since I don't know enough musicians, but I agree that Kor-Rune does great stuff.

There is no spot for an artist of the year, but if there was one, I'd nominate Fartur-Ast. His frontpaged art and the wall art he created for the winter theme are only gems in the treasure he posted on NG throughout the year.

Cmon guys, noone?

Maybe, you should wait for more than 40 minutes. Including more info could help too. Not necessarily details of the game, but other details. Do you need pixel art or any other specific kind? Only still art or does "artist" also cover animations? Background art? Tilesets? Maps? Only in-game art or also full illustrations of characters and/or scenes?
