About the process. The first thing I did was sand the body with a sheet of medium tooth sandpaper. After smoothing the body, I put down a base coat of what is essentially white, latex housepaint. After i had a solid, dry coat, I sanded it with a lighter sandpaper to smooth out any lumps and drips.
The sketch-work was done with what i believe was an 2H pencil, but it may have been softer lead. I recommend a slightly hard lead because you lines will be a bit fainter, making it easier to paint over them. I'm using Daniel Smith acrylics for the color. I'm not too big on buying pre-made colors, so I mix all my colors from basic pigments.
Here's a stupid thing I started on a rainy day and didn't finish.

anything going on at the front of the guitar yet?
I've got some color blocking on the front, but no real detail yet. I'm hoping to finally finish the back this week.
Here's a dragon-bird I did with a ballpoint pen.
Alright, back at the beginning of August, I started a thread on here hoping to update regularly as I custom painted a guitar for a friend. Alas, life came along and kicked me in the balls with such bone shattering force, that I failed to paint regularly and the thread died a sad, lonely death.
This brings us to the now. I've been doing my best to find time between school and work to paint, and I've almost finished the back. This time, updates will absolutely be on a regular basis. I'm going to shoot for weekly updates as I progress on this.
Comments and critiques are welcome.
First pic set can be found here: Wozzleblog
Thanks for the info : )

The pick guard is going to be transparent.
Definitely. What brand of finish would you recommend?

why are you painting the back of the guitar though? :0
The whole guitar needs to be painted, both front and back...as well as the neck.
Hey all. I'm working a guitar for a friend of mine and thought I'd come here for some critique.
My friend requested a ton of little monsters all over the damn thing, so there's a ton. Unfortunately, making sure I'm keeping a good flow of colors is somewhat difficult considering how many there are. I'm mainly looking for help with color placement as I work on this. I want the whole thing to feel fresh and vibrant, without certain areas getting too bogged down with one particular hue.
Any and all observations are welcome.
