And I guess its only because of the standardisation of Oral and the Written languages that these areas have faded away. Romance languages like French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese are already mutually intelligible somewhat but its usually one sided intelligibility (they can understand you but you can't understand them) and varies whether its their oral language you understand better, their written language or both the oral and written language. So it should go Castilian, Aragonese, Catalan, Occitanian and French, but even occitanian had other dialects and french comes from Langues d'oïl of which there were many regional dialects of this D'oil language which may have made the divide even more gradual. This is the way I understand it, although I might be wrong or have simplified it.
Wrong. French comes from a diversified mix of Latin, Gaul and Francique. Then, you have the words who were borrowed from Latin later on due to some Antiquity hype before Renaissance. Langue d'Oc and Langue d'Oïl are just two variations (Oc = Southern France, Oïl = North), or dialects.
